Consort 8: Dodo L'enfant Do - J. B. de Boismortier (1689 - 1755)
Dodo L'enfant Do - J. B. de Boismortier (1689 - 1755)
This canon for 3 voices is a French lullaby for children. It is found in the 1725 volume of Meslanges de musique latine française & italienne, divisez par saisons, of Christophe Ballard, the Parisian printer, bookseller and music publisher employed by Louis XIV. The words dodo and do are familiar terms from the verb dormir (to sleep). It is a typical children’s lullaby with a repetitive melody and simple soothing rhythm. We use the text as in the original manuscript.
Sleep, sleep, child
The child will sleep soon
Sleeping, the child sleeps
The child will sleep soon.
Lady Marguerite, put this child to sleep,
Until the age of 15,
The boy who is in bed doesn’t sleep.
My brother Colin will hear a burp.
The child who sleeps will have
A white apple to put in your mouth.
A red apple to put in your mouth.
Child, you will sleep soon.

This is a delighting little piece! I wish I was six again so that I could hide in the window well of my parents' long gone "bug" while listening to this. The down side is that there wasn't anything mobile enough, aside from four people with recorders, to do that with back when I was six. Our toy VW bug was one of the things we used to use to take us away for a few moments from the trials of childhood. This piece does the same now in my adulthood. I wish my sister was still alive to hear it.

Hello Kat. Glad you love the music. The Pavane comes from a French dance treatise Orchésographie, published in Lengres in 1589, and written by Jehan Tabourot, a canon of the church, under the pseudonym “Thoinot Arbeau”. Peter Warlock used the melody in his Capriol Suite.

Out of curiosity, how did Consort 8 get it's name? I've enjoyed the music which you have uploaded over the years, and am curious to know a bit more about it. If anyone else knows anything about this wonderful group, feel free to reply, as long as the information/observations are accurate, and is not simply opinion. I'm looking more for history, their musical philosophy, and their mission, as well as anything regarding their interpretation of these wonderful ancient works more on an academic/historically informed nature. I'd love to learn more about their approach to the music. As a former performer, and retired music historian, that's the part which always interests me (aside from the delicious nature of the music itself), not opinion.

Dear MammaDuck, Thank you for your thoughtful questions and comments. It is much appreciated. Our name derives from the fact that our recorder consort often plays at 8ft pitch, resulting in a mellow organ-like sound as in one of our early videos of Thomas Tallis’ If Ye Love Me. The group began 10 years ago as a casual recorder consort which met weekly to explore the available repertoire of renaissance and baroque music; over time, the group and its philosophy has evolved to what you see today. Our mission is to present programs of early music in a way which will inspire a love of early music in our audience. We delight in presenting works that have never performed in Sydney with this combination of instruments. Our material is mainly sourced online and occasionally we have transcribed from original manuscripts. We research the background of all the music to assist us in our interpretation, arranging and instrumentation. I hope this answers your questions. Susan Christie Artistic Director consort8.org
