A few thoughts: 1) It was smart of him and his coaches to focus on forward landings which would be less stressful to his injury. (And he has enough control to be able to pull them off) 2) While it certainly wasn't without risk, he was aware of that, and he made the choice to compete. He definitely doesn't regret it after winning a historic team gold 3) A number of top athletes use PRP injections in order to heal faster from injury, which I suspect was used to get him competition-ready. Blood is withdrawn, platelet rich plasma is isolated from the sample and then injected into the area which needs healing. It's completely legal since you're using your own blood and basically redistributing PRP with its healing properties (from various growth factors and such) where it's beneficial. Really smart actually considering how long it takes tendons to heal otherwise due to their poor blood supply
