Hi there,
I'm Jim, I am a woodworker that uses a Shopsmith to build my projects. I hope to share my experiences with different projects and setups on the shopsmith. I am by no means a professional woodworker. I just love to work with wood. My goal is to share with you my shop and shopsmith. My shopsmith started out as a model 500 bought online used. I have done many upgrades to it and have many of the attatchements for it. I hope to show you them in use on different projects I do. Thanks for stopping buy, and please leave comments. Thank you Jim at a Shop On The Prairie

My final opinion is at the end of this video. I did notice that the software version is still the same as the generation 1 version. Nothing new.

Here are the only issues I ran into when doing the upgrade from gen 1 to gen 2. I did not show the entire upgrade because the below link of Jim McCann from Shopsmith shows the entire process. I have included this link. ua-cam.com/video/WIpW9sb3V00/v-deo.html

Thanks for the informative videos on the Gen1 to Gen2 upgrade, along with your thoughts on whether the upgrade was worth it. Now with the recent price drop (to $273.56!) for the Gen1 to Gen2 upgrade, would you have done this if you were to do this over again?
Edie, I'm glad they lowered the price. As I stated in the video I did not gain any functional additions with the new display. As far as a recommendation I like it. I find the screen alot easier to see and use as my eyes get more tired. Thank you for the commend and I see I really need to release a video soon.
I just think hinges would be a solution to the problem. Love your videos
Thank you David. This seems to be every ones opinions. I will head down that path next. Thank you very much for the help.
Good to see you doing your thing, like the camping table/storage.
Yo - Jim - You do excellent work - it’s confidence sir - don’t denigrate yourself. Your new work is really good.
I meant your work. The candle stick from many moons ago is an example.🤜🤛
John, Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate you guys so much.
Hinges are the way to go. That door makes me uncomfortable especially since I’m good at dropping stuff!
JP sorry for the delay on my response. It hay time here in Oklahoma. I agree so it will be some time before I will be back at the daughters house to do the upgrade. Thank you for your support.
What happened to the little diesel heater and cabinets you had already made?
James, Thanks for commenting. I still have all of that. It was made with 3/4 ply and was real heavy. It was intended to support a complete camper. Father time came around and I can not see myself hauling it around. The tent will work out better for me.
Hi Jim, always good to hear from you. How about a brass piano hinge (vertical) on either the left or right side of the door. Good luck on problem solving.
William, Thank you that is a great idea thank you. That would be an easy fix. I will look into it an also look at clearances. Thank you.
This is awesome - thanks for the follow up video Jim! It sounds fantastic.
I’ll bet a kerjillion the extra button push is to alleviate concerns about the machine starting and the operator unprepared.
So here’s the story muhnorey. I can see the belt doesn’t look straight, yet I assumed it was my MS afflicted eyes. Again - dang man, thank you!
So here’s what I’m gunna do. Yes, I know I’ve gotta move my belt to the position you have. I followed older instructions about belt placement. Yer ahead of me. Not subscribing to your channel I’d STILL!! run the machine with wrong belt placement. Thank you Jim!
Good on yuh mate!! Right on!!
Hals Wood Shop. So you have completed another upgrade , more headache and more power....no just more buttons. hmmm. I saw the Power Pro demo live at Lowes by Mike Young and it was impressive and so was the $2200 back in 2017. I bought the casters and lift assist, both worth the money. I cannot say your upgrades are worth the bucks. Enjoying my 510 and many SPT and many accessories I have bought in buying used. Thanks. Hoping to see your next project. Thanks for the Shop Tour
Hal, Thank you so much for engaging into this upgrade. You are so correct on the costs of upgrades vs. increased functionality to do woodworking. The upgrade from 510 to powerpro for me was worth the money but the rest not so much. Thank you and I too look forward to the next project.
Good information! I am surprised that you have to push another button after Confirm? Thanks for your earlier opinion on updating to the PowerPro 2. It looks like I will be sticking with my PowerPro 1.
Stased, I thank you for watching the channel. This is why I shy away from reviews. I don't want to cause someone else's decisions. I am happy with the upgrade just too much money. I could have done the 520 fence for that price.
Good job Jim, you are THE man.
Good on yuh mate!!
looks good. thanks for keeping us informed on your progress
Are you filming on a small boat?
desklamp, Thank you for watching. No I just used my cell phone handheld to do this quick help short. Sorry if it was not the best quality.
I sent a photo via messenger.
Thank you John I'm not sure I have messenger?
@@kd6vpe How would you like the photo sent - You let me know, I’ll send it.👍👍
@@johnrice6793 Thank you John try kd6vpe@gmail.com I hope that works. I appreciate your help.
I’ll remove the shroud and look at mine -
Good information!
Thanks for your opinion. As a senior citizen woodworker who sees great as long as i have light, I was interested in your thoughts on the upgrade. But for the time being, I think I'll save some money, or maybe buy some other tool I haven't needed for the past 40 years.
Garth, I glad it was helpful. I really was not sure how to go about this review thing. I have decided that I'd rather do project videos in the future.
Jim - man, don’t - if you’ve got rubbing higher rpm won’t relieve it. I’d get the problem diagnosed BEFORE moving on .
John, You are absolutely right. I should not have done that. I'm still trying to figure it out. Just have not spent enough time yet. I really need to so I can start playing with it again. Memorial Day has my attention right now. Not the playtime the thought of my fallen brothers.
What was the noise caused by?
William, I have not got it totally figured out but I do believe it is my belt is rubbing. I remember I had difficuties with the excentric bushing slipping inwards a while back. I'll make a video when I get it fixed. Thanks for watching an engaging with the channel.
@@kd6vpe Send me your Google email address, I’ll send the photo - I’m having a hellofa time figuring out what I’m trying to do😵💫.
Good job, Jim. I am out of woodworking for a few weeks due to cataract surgery in both eyes and a no dust warning! I can and do watch videos. Looking forward to your next video using upgrade. Thanks,
William, You will be happy with the surgery. I had it done a few years back. Thank you for watching. I just sent an email to tech support for some information I feel you all deserve that is not in the manual.
Well, you baited us! Looking forward to #2!!
John, I did. Not intentionally I just was not sure how to give my opinion yet. I will in next video. I just ran out of time because I wanted to get it back up and running.
Good video! I am also considering this upgrade. I look forward to your upcoming videos.
Thank you stased7343, The next video is when I will give my thoughts on the change over and initial review of the new operations. Let me know if you have any questions I can answer for you.
You do have family that sew and would love to help with your project!
Hals Wood Shop. Yup cannot resist waiting to see this one. I know you love it. But my 3rd 510 and all the accessories ( i had to sell my first ot move across country PA to AZ) and the few few, few problems. Add in all the upgrades of wheels and lift assist, extra accessories that came with my buys even the used SS scroll saw and now 6600 Dust Collector I am not near the bucks you have in your toys. I watched your headache as it went down last year, oh no,, maintenance !!. What little maintenance I have to do and the power. I saw live Mike Young do the Power Pro demo, impressive but not for the $2200 and that was 8 years ago. I guess I am saying dollar for dollar the Mechanical is still holding up over the Electronic and worth every dollar. Even you took and made a Deputy for need. I am ready to watch and see. Best Wishes and enjoy the toy. !!
Hal, I so happy to see you here. Thank you for your support of the channel. The PowerPro gen 1 upgrade I did, did give me some powerful options that I have used alot. It was worth it for me. The maintenance issue is scarry but so far I have been able to keep using it. I must be on 4 or 5 years with it now. Thank you again.
Hi Jim, are you currently running your SS on 220 ACV? I am now on 120 ACV, considering the higher voltage. Your comments are appreciated. I also use a 50+year old Sears sewing machine. The height of my SS works good for many things.
William, Thank you. An I run with 120 ACV, I've only had one occations where my SS seemed to struggle so I did not change over yet. I have 220 available in the shop so not a hard change for me.
Well- we’ll, Someday sir - you’ve gotta give the 520 table system a whirl. Anyway - great to see you - I’m gunna send some pants - I caught a knee on some barbed wire. Your stitching talent is, - - - - - - - what’s needed!!
LOL
Damned good video!😂 funny as you know what!
“Just the facts, man (mam)just the facts”. Yes sir, looking forward to the entire process.👍👍
John, You and me both! This will be interesting. Not sure why it is going to take so long for them to ship. Unless the have to order everything themselves.
I would love to hear your opinion. I upgraded to a first gen power pro and I don’t know there is enough value in version 2 to make it worthwhile for me.
Phillip, I truly agree with you. I would not have done it without the extra help from Shopsmith. Thank you for engaging with the topic.
That's exactly the 'straightness' I imagine I would achieve if I tried to sew something with a machine! 😂 Kudos to you, I don't have the guts to even try. Heck, your haphazard hem might even perform better than a straight one because it can resist pulling forces from all different directions!
Nutball, Thank you for contributing. I'm getting better at it now. I have one more set to make for the camper.
Been thinking of also doing the upgrade so I’m interested in the upgrade process and your thoughts after using it. I guess I’m saying “thanks for being the Guinea pig”.
gshreaing, Me too. This is an upgrade that I've been wondering about for a long time. I surly hope it is worth the trouble.
Be interested in your thoughts about the distance the control panel sticks out from the headstock, and the longer quill handle pivot needed to miss the new panel.
James, Very good point. I'm sure it won't be to different. I hope it helps with some of the current situations of the handle being in the way.
i like to watch putting back together i will give me some hints on putting one together if i buy one. anything you find unique on the power head
Thank you Bryan, I so happy to show that part. There are some chalenges I remember with the install of the power supply. I hope I cover all your questions.
Looking forward to your thoughts on the new Power Pro 2.0!
StaSed, I will do my best thank you for commenting.
REALLY pleased for you Jim. Next time you just don't think something is not worth making a video about, remember this great outcome, and how much so many of us enjoy just watching another guy working on his projects. It encourages us to get off the coach and into the shop 🙂
Do it your way. That always works.
Thank you Jim, I will and I appreciate you.
great job Jim!
Frank, Thank you for watching. I'm happy you are enjoying it.
Congratulations!! I'm so excited for you! Thanks for taking us along on your projects!
OpossumPiper, Thank you for the comment. I appreciate you all. Yes this is a fun journey. I'm glad you like it.
Hi Jim, glad to see your excitement. Do you run your SS on 220 ACV?
William, Thank you for the comment. I run on 110 vac. I have 220 available but so far I have not needed it. Very few time has it had to struggle thru a cut.
Way to go! I’m happy for you, Jim.
Scott Thank you I appreciate your kind words
Congrats! Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!
Hooper, Than I you for all your kind words and many comments on this channel.
Congratulations. Dude, right on!!
John, Thanks you have been on the ride for a long time I appreciate you and your comments. Yep I will pull the trigger Monday for the upgrade and try to document the process. Not sure I will get anymore functionality other than the big screen which I need mostly. Thank you again for all your support.
@@kd6vpe Yes sir. You’re on the move now! I’ll add - I’m very interested in the Gen2. Looking forward to your video.🤜🤛
congrats Jim. im glad for you. i have trying to justify the 2600 dollar upgrade.
Bryan, Exactly for me I just need the display and quill adjust upgrade. I will make a video of the process if that will help. I did the upgrade diy kit from a 510 to power pro years ago. I have been very happy overall with the performance and extra speed control. Thank you for the comment.
I think you are doing just fine with your presentation. I will always be a subscriber.
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement David
Hals Wood Shop Congrats Jim. Very busy man. Thanks for the tour. Good ideas for all of us seeing another Shop. Be Safe.
Thanks Hal, I do plan on cleaning and then doing a better tour. Thanks for being on the channel.
