When they wrote this song it was about Jonathon's battle with meth. He explained in one interview that he had been doing a lot of methods and his manhood was very retracted. The title Helmet In The Bush was a description of that side effect of doing meth. The song is about his internal struggle with being addicted and not wanting to die and praying for some sort of way out of addiction.

I know this is 2 years late but... On tour for this album, they opened with suicide note part 1 over the PA with a giant, faded American flag with a coiled snake blocking the stage, lights glowing eerily behind it. As it transitioned into suicide note part 2, the flag fell to the stage and Phil, Dime & Rex jumped over it in full swing, riffs blaring. Saw them do this in Hampton VA. It was... absolutely amazing. I was on the rail, Dime side. Best concert of my life.

7th grade. I managed to sneak a copy of the “The Bleeding” into my house when I went with my friend to the Blockbuster music. Prior to this I thought Metallica was the heaviest thing I had ever heard and that album changed my life. I knew this is what I wanted my guitar to sound like., plus that cassette became top currency because all of my friends that played guitar wanted that tape, so they would trade anything for a copy of it. I was 14 years old the first time I heard them and I’m 40 now so it’s been a while. Cannibal is just a horror movie in music format.

Props to you for even going through the whole album. I love this stuff, but I can understand it being extraordinarily challenging for the uninitiated. 🔥🫀🤘

I've been a fan of Cannibal Corpse since 1992. That's the year this album came out and they started getting attention from people in the mainstream like Pat Roberson and Jim Carrey, who gave them a cameo in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Like you said, I was a fan of Slayer in the 80s when I was in elementary school. I later listened to Possessed for their heavier sound. Then, I got into Death; the first true death metal band. Then, a few years later, we got Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Obituary, Deicide and Morbid Angel almost simultaneously. It was a great time to be a teenager when my favorite subgenre of music was born

I had lost interest in metal and was listening to punk and grunge and my friend Steve play Vulgar for me and when far beyond driven hit I got that and several other CDs from Columbia house for a penny and it was the best penny I ever spent.
