@Zakuruishi *spoilers* That´s true, but There was at least a year before they send zack and cloud on mission to clouds hometown... There, stupid Shinra people get them and made some experiments to them over four years... After Zacks death, cloud returned to Shinra, and two years later, he returned to Midgar as SOLDIER first class... That´s the way, how I understand the things... :p
