This "improvisation" was performed at a concert at the Mission Houses Museum in Honolulu in 1990. I wanted to do a version of this charming Waltz in the style of the concert paraphrases on popular waltzes that was ubiquitous in the late 19th and early twentieth century. My closest model was the Rosenthal paraphrases of Strauss Waltzes. It was not a real improvisation in that I planned the music in my head and figured out the general sequence of things I wanted to happen; starting with a reference to the Ravel "Valses Nobles" and ending with the reference to "La Valse; including a variation using the Thalberg "three hand" technique, quoting two Fledermaus Waltzes and combining them contrapuntally with the original and with Queen Liliu'okalani's famous song "Aloha o'e"; quoting the Weber "Invitation to the Dance" before the coda. But it was (obviously!) not practiced, so I really didn't know what actual notes would be played. I had pretty much forgotten about this until I came across it by accident on an old CD and decided it might be fun for other people to hear.
