    Great guys. Happy to say I partnered up with Trevor for my first jiu jitsu class 7 years ago and walked the picket line with Mike before we met on the matts 5 years ago. Two savages on the matts and just beautiful people, which reflects kind of environment that has been created by coach Elliot and the Openmat team.

    Is this also a type of scarfold escape? Looks like a similar position at least for a little bit.

    Great details and thanks for the scenario demonstration. I have grown to favor playing half guard a lot and that is one of my biggest problems. My only defense so far has been to bail my left shin and push with my left (upper) foot against the body and hip escape away to reset. But, many times it doesn't work if I don't time it right. I like the concept of following the leg up with the bottom leg as it comes up to pass. Thank you for posting the video and I'll definitely be following your progress. Oss!

    what about the x pass variation where they drop the elbow in your hip instead of lapel or shoulder grab?

    • @lonewolf9223
      @lonewolf9223 2 роки тому

      That was my question as well. I'm getting passed by a couple guys at my gym who do the x-pass but instead of lapel grip, they straight arm down to the hip and keep pressure there.

    Thanks so much for posting these videos. My one criticism is that usually when your opponent is trying to knee-slice, he will get a deep cross-collar grip on you. In this video your opponent is gripping your gi on the same side. I've honestly never had someone grip me like that when knee-slicing my half guard. The cross-collar grip gives your opponent control of your head because he can frame you with his forearm if you try to turn towards him too much. Is there a variation in any of your videos where your opponent gets a deep cross-collar grip before commencing the knee-slice pass? Thank you again for your videos. The knee-slice pass is one of the most powerful half guard passes, and even if your opponent is a white belt, if he is strong and learns the knee slice pass it can be very difficult to counter. Frustratingly, defenses to the knee-slice pass are very rarely taught at my school and are not even included once on the white to purple curriculum.

      Dan6580 I find most people use a far side underhook to finish the knee slice and that would kill these knee slice defences

    • @Rog4722
      @Rog4722 8 років тому

      I think you are right, especially at the advanced level. After making the September post and working on a variety of knee slice defenses, I found one (tucking arm under the thigh that is being passed, and elevating the thigh slightly) that has prevented every knee slice attempt (except for one, where I succumbed to exhaustion) against purple belts and below. But what I found with my black belt instructor is that whereas he starts with the cross-collar grip initially, once I tuck my arm under my thigh he then switches to the far-side underhook (as you mentioned), and from there he has the leverage to force it through. I guess the next step is I have to figure out how to block that underhook.

    • @Walruz1000
      @Walruz1000 8 років тому

      Dan6580 I'm looking for something too but aside from defending the underhook I've not found anything. I use a sweep from quarter guard which has varying success against the underhook, it's a roll over sweep but I've found generally once my opponent gets that underhook it's time to start trying to escape side control! if you find a good one post it back as a reply here.

    • @Rog4722
      @Rog4722 8 років тому

      I'm having a hard time visualizing the move you're describing. If you have a link to a demonstration, I'd love to see it. After sending my last reply, I did think of a move that might work: turn slightly towards my right side with left elbow glued to my stomach, and then when my opponent goes for the underhook, I go inside it, wrap my left arm around his slicing leg, go to all fours, and then attempt a single-leg takedown. I'll let you know if I have any success with the move I just described. It's going to be tough because the only person who does the cross-collar to far-side underhook transition on me is my black belt instructor, and his reflexes are insane. Nonetheless, it's worth a shot.

      +John Dorian If you're still having trouble, then you should get grips on his sleeve right when your partner grabs your knees. When he grabs your knees that means he has 2 points of contact and you have none. When you get grips then you have 2 against his 2. If you have your feet on his body or biceps for spider guard then you have 4 against his 2 which is good. Hope this helps.
