How to Pronounce Hawaiian Words Correctly
Переглядів 15 тис.Рік тому
If you live in Hawaiʻi or are planning to visit, I can guarantee that you will need to pronounce Hawaiian words. Here in Hawaiʻi, Hawaiian words are used for most street names, names of places and businesses, and even names of people. In this video, I will teach you tricks and tips on how to correctly pronounce Hawaiian words and we'll go over some commonly mispronounced words as well. Mākaukau...
Have you already covered Waiakea water?
The Hawaiian vowel system seems to have a lot in common with Spanish and Japanese. Pure vowels, no diphthongs, no "uh" sound. And just five, not the score that English has. And the vowel sounds are as-written, like Japanese and Spanish, unlike English, which has five vowel letters to represent maybe twenty distinct vowel sounds.' English is a bad starting point to be able to pronounce Hawaiian words correctly.
When she pronounced the 5 Hawaiian vowels, it sounded pretty much like the 5 Spanish vowels.
Auwe! I’ve seen so much videos with people posting how to “correctly pronounce Hawaiian words” and they still say Hawai’i as Ha-why-ee and Honolulu as Hana-lulu. Mahalo nui loa for posting this aunty and showing the keiki and others how to correctly pronounce these words.🤙🏽
Luana, may I ask where you got that lovely "Aloha is spoken here" sign? I have seen similar ones sold as a 'tourist' souvenir but this one is very classy and I would love to have one like yours on display among my books and photos in my Hawaiiana room. Mahalo!
The pronunciation is exactly like the portuguese of Brasil pronunciation.
How do you pronounce 'Nailani'?
could you do the pronunciation of “Maile”
How do you say “thank you”, “goodbye” and a casual “sorry”?
Thank you so much for this video! I’m going to Oahu next month and coming from Aotearoa (New Zealand) it’s so important for me to embrace and learn some of the correct pronunciations! Watching this video, it’s actually really easy because in nz, our indigenous people (Māori) have the exact same vowels and accent (just slightly less American sounding). You should look up some yt vids about the New Zealand Māori culture, our people originated from the same place and have huge similarities in culture! Same with places like Fiji 😊🙌🏽
Are you okay after the wild fires?
ʻAe! Maikaʻi loa. Mahalo nui loa.
I'm trying to find a chant, can you help me?
Mahalo e ke kumu!
Thank you for uploading again.
I'm from Hawaii, but found myself driving through the French Pyrenees near the Spanish border and basque country. I was on a toll road but forgot my ticket and had to communicate, as best I could, to the toll attendant where I entered the road so he could charge me accordingly. The only landmark I could remember was the one I could pronounce: the town of Pau. I speak no French, but I absolutely crushed the pronunciation. He understood, I paid, and the situation was all pau. Hawaiian is highly practical around the world!
Hey! Im trying to learn hawaiian but i have one question... What would my name be in Hawaiian? I cant find it anywhere could you help me? My name is Malte
There are some other channels I found that were so interesting and informative that I went back to their initial posts and 'caught up'. I'm looking forward to following posts as from what I've seen is outstanding
Just came across your channel. Subscribed with the ringy dingy enabled. Looking forward to your future presentations.
Awesome! Mahalo!
@@thehawaiianchannel you're welcome!
Even as a "haole", I am always frustrated when people call O'ahu's capital "Hana-lulu" instead of HONO-lulu. It's so very obvious that are no "a's" in the word! This channel is awesome and I wish other islanders would also take the time to correct their sloppy pronunciations. Hawaiian is such a beautiful language and respect should be shown when using it.
Mahalo, Susan! I am so glad this channel is helpful.
It seems even locals who should know better are saying HAnolulu. So annoying.
Thank You so much 🙏✨💕
You are so welcome!
You have such skill with maintaining a straight face, Kumu! 🌺
Mahalo!
I love your vibe and teaching style! New subscriber. 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽
Mahalo nui!
Keep ‘em coming, ke ‘olu’olu. ❤
Mahalo! I will be uploading new content this coming week.
Mahalo for this channel! Such a great resource! I will share about this for sure.
Mahalo nui! I so appreciate it. Working on more.
excited for more of your uploads!!
Mahalo! Adding more content today!
Oh my goodness, Luana! So excited for your channel! My husband and I came to Maui as malihini in 2019. Can't believe it's been 4 years already because we still treasure that visit and think of it ALL the time! I studied as much about ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi that I could months before our visit and I discovered Kulāiwi with ʻEkela Kanīʻaupiʻo-Crozier on UA-cam!! I really enjoyed her teaching and truly fell in love with the language and culture! I admire such pride and dedication to teach and keep this beautiful language alive! I even found Hawaiian as a language on my Duolingo app! It really helped with conversational speech and it was awesome to hear people actually pronouncing the words and sentences. I actually reached out to ʻEkela when we arrived on Maui in 2019 through the Kamehameha school email and she replied almost instantly!! Hurray!! We corresponded and she invited us to eat a beautiful, delicious meal! She and her husband Pōmaika'i were the most gracious hosts. My studies watching ʻEkela on UA-cam helped me to read street signs, greet so many friendly people, order delicious food and to truly respect the āina!! I didn't even take one grain of sand home with me! I just discovered you on Instagram with Morning Mana'o and it warmed my heart to hear you speak ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi and I was so excited to follow you. And then when you said you had a started new UA-cam channel, I said SIGN ME UP!! 😄 So here I am. I was born in Maine and I live in Washington state, but Hawaiʻi will always have a piece of my pu'uwai! My husband and I look forward to returning to Maui again! It was the most beautiful, relaxing, welcoming place we've ever been to. Mahalo nui loa for your new channel, Luana, and I can't wait to learn more with your future videos! Me ke aloha!
Mahalo, Kelsey! I love hearing messages like this. Kumu ʻEkela is a dear friend and she is absolutely wonderful. I am so glad you are here and joining this online learning community. I will be adding more content today and later this week. So excited to have you!
I’ve been saying all these words wrong my whole life! Good thing you shared this with me.
Mahalo for watching and learning with me!
Disney teaching us to say Maui wrong this whole time. Thank you for the video.
Naʻu ka hauʻoli! My pleasure! Mahalo for watching.
It's just pronounced with an American accent
