    I live in Liverpool, small town in the South shore so the only thing I agree are the taxes and the medical care. No mosquitoes and black flies , winter is very mild perhaps 5 days of snow for the whole year. By the way you mentioned 4 reasons not 5.

    Not sure if anyone has mentioned the high cost of electricity, which is the main source of power for home heating , making a winter stay here very costly..... i guess this is one of the reasons there are so many summer homes which are empty most of the year. I also. found out that the property tax, HST and provincial taxes are higher here than in most provinces..... and you get no services for the huge tax bills.

    How are you using the water from the well? We have a groundwater well in our garden (in Germany) but you really can't use the water for basically anything except watering plants. So do you have a special filtering system? For showering etc.? I just don't quite understand this procedure.

    • @LifeinNovaScotia
      @LifeinNovaScotia 19 днів тому

      We don’t need a filter on our well water. It passed the test and comes from quite a deep depth. I think that is one of the benefits that Canada has to offer, the majority of the country is clean and well taken care of.

      Yes there is a pump that fills a pressured tank which then feeds into your regular water tank. My parents have a groundwater well in the UK which recently got connected to a UV filter system and they’re able to drink from it now. But typically wells in Canada pull from multiple 10’s to 100’s of meters down.

  • @Dragons_Novel

    Native Nova Scotian here. The bugs aren't bad now. In the 70s and 80s, it was common for us kids to have dozens (probably 100s) of blackfly bites on the back of our necks, behind the ears and on our legs and arms at any given time. They were so thick, one might not find an unbitten spot on the back of the neck. I think I'm immune to their bite now. Blackflies are out in the day unless it's over 25 degrees, then the horseflies and mooseflies (larger than horseflies) come out. They are aggressive biters. Even drenched in Deep Woods, they'll try to take a bite. Mosquitoes come out at night. Deep Woods easily defends against blackflies and mosquitoes, so that's the product of choice. Winter makes us appreciate summer.

It is almost impossible to walk my dogs due to bugs and ticks during warm weather and due to winds and storms in the winter Impossible to see a doctor unless you go to ER I live very close to the ocean and the fog and humidity all summer is unbearable. I have to run the heat pump all summer and freeze in the house to ensure no mold will grow I find everything so expensive and very little choice in shopping. I bought online more than ever And finally the wind storms. My Lord! I would rather live the cold ON winters People are very nice though. I call it ocean mist. Water dripping from trees and plants rotting in the gardens. When this ends, the wind storm season starts. So strong, they blew a huge bbq off the deck 3 times now. They blew the garbage huge wooden box in the ditch many times. I would rather have snow and below zero weather. Will go back 🙁 soon, all I need to figure out is what I do with the house. We live in Nova Scotia and wanted to change to solar. Our monthly cost for electricity is around 170 dollars on average. The estimate to change to solar was 35,000 minus the 3,000 provincial rebate. With the 10 year interest free loan, our monthly bill would be around 300 dollars. This estimate was from the solar company. There were some additional costs that pushed the monthly bill to 300. Also, we need to upgrade our electrical service to 200 amp service. Now, if I estimate that the cost of electricity will go up by 5 percent per year over the next 10 years, it will take us around 16 years to break even if there are no issues with the system that are not covered under warranty or with the inverter that only has a 10 year warranty. This cost of going green is still too high.

Instead of being a republic like the States, we still tie into Britain, which is the worst country and STILL HAS A MONARCHY!! because Britain has taxes, taxes taxes, WE NEED TO CUT THESE TIES.. Funny thing, the algo just showed me one of your videos on life in NS, because I live in Cape Breton I guess. I checked out your channel and now you are in the US. Funny, but not so much fun for you I see. Sorry for the situation you found yourself in. I moved out here 18 years ago from Ontario. Not sure why you left NS, I only watch a couple of vids, including this one. I guess you learned the landlords lesson on the first go. I can tell you, it could have been worse. You probably know that, though. I'm glad you found a better tenant. I don't know if you intend on keeping that property, but I thought you might benefit from my pointing out something most folks are overlooking. That would be global warming. Perhaps it is not on your radar. If it is, good choice to keep the place so far. In any case, rising temps are going to crush a lot of places. Nova Scotia is one of the places that has some reasonable future temps. Because that future is less than thirty years from now, you might find it more useful to come back to Canada. I expect our failure to respond so far, will bring things to the fore by some measure. The ban of foreign purchases of property in Canada is said to end in 2027, but it might get extended out past 2030. We can't build fast enough, so the value of property is high. Considering all that is in store for global property values, holding on to that property could be hard, but worth it. Good luck, too bad you had to leave🍀

    canada is a high cost, low value nation. you pay a lot, and what you get in return varies considerably, but on balance, you dont get much. It is not getting, or going to get better w/o drastic changes which canada, is not really up to it. Primary reason, is the FIRE sector in canada skims huge amounts of money and produces.......nothing really. Canada's economy has to come resemble a collection of ponzi schemes, far too many immigrants, and the govt and corporate sectors are very corrupt despite this idea globally that canada is pretty free of corruption. The regimes in ottawa do not act in the national interest, so not surprising hardly anyone else does either. This attitude, filters downwards. Economic and social mismanagement, is endemic in this nation. So there it is....why you pay so much and cant get a family doctor unless your parents die and give you their spot at their doctors practice in their will.

    As I was surfing the 'net here at home in Burnaby, BC, trying to find a source for my old favourite, Grape Nut Ice Cream, I found that there was none available outside the Maritime Provinces. Then I saw the Scotsburn name. I was immediately reminded of the stories about my grandfather, William (Willie) Mclean and the Scotsburn Creamery. He and his sons (my Uncle Elwood and my dad, Edgar) grew up around the creamery business and they expanded creamery operations into New Brunswick. I spent practically my whole childhood around the Harvey Creamery, which by the time I was born in 1945 was a thriving enterprise, having shipped many tons of butter overseas during WW2 (a considerable percentage of which ended up on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean) sunk by U-boats! As time went on, Harvey Creamery was bought out by Capital Co-op and our family moved away to Fredericton in 1958 (for me, at age12, a traumatic time). Does anyone recall my grandad, Willie McLean and his sons Edgar and Elwood? Generations of my McLean ancestors are buried in the Scotsburn Cemetery.

Nat gas is gone but offset by electricity. My electricity was $100/month and now $200 or so depending on season. In NS, we pay 2nd highest electricity price in the country. Quebec is the cheapest. NSPower is MANDATED to have a 8% profit, so we pay more when they have a bad year. Every $100 we pay, $8 goes to shareholders. We the customers pay for the lean years while shareholders reap 8% .

    A year later, and things have only deteriorated further. Having lived in Vancouver/southern BC coast most of my life, I chose to move first to PEI, and then settled in NS three years ago. My impression of the Maritimes? I happily moved back to BC. It later emerged that I was just one of legions of others who were lured to the Atlantic on the promise of accessible real estate, but found that the overall price for that access was far too exorbitant in every sense of the word. In terms of negative life experiences, it ranks as a clear number one. I had lived in small northern communities in the past, and assumed that life in the Maritimes wouldn’t be too dissimilar. I couldn’t have been more mistaken.

    You’re the best, very handsome. If only I could grow hair like you, just look at that flow. The accent seems a bit put on though, like you’re not really from Britain but maybe you’re parents are…

    I was looking for this video a long time ago since I watched it last year before I decided to move out of Vancouver. I watched several videos of Nova Scotia, Ottawa, and Montreal to see what life looks like, what costs, and more just to get an idea of where to move. I moved to BC 5 years ago thinking that it would work for me since I came from the second biggest city in my country, but once I got there I realized that a crowded and big city is not my thing anymore. I prefer and love to live in the countryside. When I saw this video I did not save it and I was looking for it cus I was not sure if it was in Ottawa or Nova Scotia, but that I found it. I love the video cus I am an immigrant in Canada 🇨🇦 as well, and I lived in North Carolina a long time ago, I live in Rose Hill, & Wallace beautiful cities too. I would like to see more videos from you guys. You have a new subscriber
