Chapeau! Impressive gallery & well deserved win in a competition where the standard is really high.
Great image Richard! The semi abstract background works so well.
Awesome work!
Love the photo! Slowly saving to join a future photography workshop 😀
Thanks, hopefully meet you on that workshop one day
Very informative video - enjoyed the trip views from the office :)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I will draw a comment from channel subscribers at the end of January to win the print. Good luck!
Great video BUT...... Lightroom seems to be completely broken with its inability to store the correct paper settings in the print module. I am aware of other photographers totally frustrated with this known issue. Instead of being able to set the correct parameters under printer options for the paper I am using (Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Gloss) and using the correct Ilford ICC profile from Lightroom the selected parameters such as paper type, resolution, speed etc are cannot be locked down and saved. I am using an Epson Pro 3880 and it's hard to figure out if it's the Epson print Driver or Adobe Lightroom that is dodgy. I have tried trashing preferences in Lightroom but this has made no difference. I am using a Mac Studio M2, Sonoma OS and Lightroom Classic. - I have downloaded the latest Epson printer driver from the US site I can print in Photoshop successfully (!) but not as convenient. Advice welcome.
For landscapes I have a Nikon FX 20mm f1.8 for lowlight and a FX 24-120 f4 zoom. The problem with using a long zoom for landscapes is atmospheric haze.
I’ve been using the 24-120mm a lot lately. It’s a great lens and extremely sharp. Primes will always be a bit sharper, but these days the difference isn’t as much as it used to be.
I really liked that! Can you please share your thoughts/info on what to expect from the lifetime of Z8? The shutter is not mechanical but Nikon doesn't state anything about the endurance and wearing out so it is not unlimited. My guess here; if this is the replacement for D850 then it should be 0.5Millions shots 5-7 years without a problem
Yes I used my D850 Yes, I used my D850 for five years with no problem at all. As this has just got an electronic shutter and built as a pro body, not a mechanical one, I can’t see this being an issue in the life of the camera.
Unfortunately, paper size selection is now broken in Lightroom on MacOS after Sonoma 14.4, limiting you to a small subset of "standard" size papers. It still works correctly in most other applications, like Photoshop, Photos, Office, Epson Print Layout, etc. Any printer.
It seems each time they do a macOS update. There’s a fallout with the Print driver, currently running on the latest version of OS 15 everything is fine. I expect when they bring our OS 16 the same will happen though! It sometimes pays to hold back for a couple of updates on a new OS.
Excellent video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Andrew
Hello Could you please guide me on how doing a 2 cm white border on all sides in lightroom or psd for printing? Because when i print for example A3+ the borders appear extremely different in all sides ) is there any solution please ? I have canon pixma 100 pro s
It’s really easy to set up custom boards using the layer options within the Print module in Lightroom. To get exact border sometimes you will need to make the decision whether you have different ratio boarders or you crop the image because it will depend on the aspect ratio of the image whether you can get exact borders.
Thanks for this video! Recently purchased the Epson XP-15000 and this helped me understand the controls in lightroom and bring a little more clarity to what each function does. Quick question, you mentioned the Epson p800 having a native ppi of 360? What exactly does that mean? Also, how does it relate to the DPI you use while selecting your printing settings?
PPI is pixels per inch, not to be confused with DPI which is droplets per an inch. The Epsom P 800 has a native PPI of 360 and then it prints at a DPI of 1440 or 2880. When you resize the file for printing this is when you select the PPI and when you print within the Print driver this is when you set the DPI.
Good review, just the relevant.Thank You..
Glad it was helpful!
Which filter setup do you have for 14-30mm lens?
I use the Benro filter 100mm system, see photographyworkshops.co.nz/benro-filters/ But I have also just got the new 82mm Magnetic Benro filters and theses will be great option for this lens too.
This was very helpfull. I must work wit an Epson SC9500 and some misunderstandings hve now been clear. Kind regards from Germany
Gad it helped you :)
Once again another great video. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Nikon Z24-120 f4 lens. Giving you a little more than the 24-70 kit lens. And I’m also jealous of your beautiful landscapes that surrounds you.
Im am gald you enjoyed it @patrickmcmahon818 - I think the 24-120mm is an exceptional quality and very versatile lens. I’m considering replacing my 24-70mm for one of these, and one of the reasons I mentioned it in the video. I think it would be brillaint to have the extra reach and one go-to lens when in a sitatuion when I having to work fast or out photographing in bad weather.
Great Video < Subscribed
Thanks :)
My opinion is that the EVF is a major drawback for landscape photography. It simply cannot replicate the dynamic range of human vision. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the other advantage in z cameras but the times I had to adjust the exposure just to check the highlight and the shadows is annoying and makes composition so difficult. Separately there is the issue od limiting the dof preview to 5.6. Even my 15 year old D3 can do preview to whatever f stop you want is frustrating as well.
On the Z 8, I set my View mode (photo LV) to "Adjust for easy of view" and I find this does a good job of balancing the EVF out for easy viewing and composition. I personally don't like the "Show effects of setting option" - I can see how some people might find this handy as the EVF changes as you change exposure/setting, but I find this hard to compose with when turned on. I'm finding the EVF on the Z8 a lot better than the EVF on the Z7, which I struggled using. It is also worth turning on "High fps viewfinder display" on the Z8, at 120fps it look so much more nature that when turn off (60fps)
No camera gets tired and dated
They do get a little tired when you use them full time for 5 years! But yes the D850 is still an amazing camera
Fantastic review of the Z8. Like you, I moved away from the D850 but it took me a little longer to do it. While keeping my D850 I picked up a Z6 a few years back just to have a fun camera and see if mirrorless was something I was interested in. Using only the kit 24-70 f4 that it came with, I began to notice that I was enjoying the Z6 more than my D850. The new Z lenses seemed to be a perfect match to the mirrorless body and the images were beautiful. Just recently I made the big switch, selling my D850 and all my f-mount lenses and picking up a Z9 (just before the release of the Z8) along with new Z lenses. Best move I’ve made! Look forward to seeing more videos from you in the future.
Thanks @patrickmcmahon818 I'm glad you enjoyed the review. The new Z lenses are brilliant including the 24-70mm f4 kit lens which I really enjoy having as a compact zoom, I'm just about to post another video covering lenses on the Z8 so watch out for that :)
@@RichardYoungPhotography Great, can’t wait to see the video. I’ll be watching for it.
@@patrickmcmahon818 Its just gone up :)
Thanks for the info!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice😍
:)
That’s great that you can now remove all the information from the viewfinder and live view screen. That can be quite frustrating when trying to fine tune your composition. The other draw card is the sensor shield for when changing lenses. If I had the money, the Z8 would be my choice.
Hi Nicola, hope you are doing well! Yes it probably the thing I am liking most about it, a 100% clean viewfinder and screen so I can fully concentrate on only the composition. The exposure setting are all on the top LCD display when I want them and the great thing is the exposure setting also pop back up in the viewfinder as soon as you turn one of the dials too. On the Z 6 and Z 7 this was a real problem with the info on top of the image. I can not remember what model you have? If it is a Z 6ii or Z 7ii you can do a work around on this and set one of the custom FN buttons to "Live View Info Display Off", I have done this on my Z FC and it works well.
Thanks for this review!

I’ve recently sold my EPSON P800 to a friend. Until that point, it’s served me well on my MacBook Pro. He uses a windows 11 laptop and is just starting with Adobe LRc etc. initially on usb / plugging in it looked good as it self set up! However, only yesterday he tried to print for the first time and then found out it is ‘stuck’ on A4 paper size ~ I had a look (4h later)!!! I was unable to resolve. I deleted all files etc for EPSON, went to EPSON online and downloaded drivers etc…. Still no joy ~ the printer unable to install. We then WiFi connected ~ fine, and it was now in his list of add ons on laptop; but still unable to change paper size???? Please can you help
Hi James, It is hard to know what is going on here without seeing the problem/driver, if you wish you could send me a few screen shots to richard@photographyworkshops.co.nz and I will let you know if I can see any easy fix a can give you via an quick email, if not it may require some time with online tuition to set the printer up right.
stunning result well done dude , have subbed to your channel, Question... how the hell did you get out there
I the great opportunity to guide a tour for New Zealand Photography Workshops on a trip with Heritage Expeditions. Amazing place and got back there agin this year but we were a month later (feb) and the mega herbs had finished flowering.
Thanks a LOT. Very pedagogical. Take care Göran from Latvia

Thank you Richard, you are very helpful.
Glad it was helpful for you!
A very comprehensive summary and well explained. Thank you!!
Thanks @kezonline
360 ppi for the p800. I cannot however find this for the et8550. What is this called in the manual?
The ET 8550 has a DPI of 1200 x 4800, so for this printer please set you PPI to 300
Richard, thanks for this video. I really like your presentation style and learned a lot!
Thank you, hope it inspires you to do some printing!

Awesome Richard. You have made life much easier in understanding the work arounds of my printer. Not a digital printer but nonetheless, thank you. I'll be following you and watching other videos you have done. Be well.
Hi Joe, thanks glad you enjoyed it!
That's awesome Richard, I love those wild seas and your enthusiasm. Those blue's are stunning and to get those birds in the frame too, beautiful.

awesome richard - wish i was there
It's an amazing trip to the Sub Antarctic Islands if you ever get the chance!
Great video. I have a P800 and have had great results but after watching this I understand what was once just me hacking my way through. Thanks
Yes, there are lots of little tricks with the P800 & newer P906 and this covers a few of them, glad it was helpful!
hi, i did all of these steps and then print them wirelessly with my Epson SC P800 on different high-quality papers. I exported high res. photos to my ipad and then i sent to my printer. BUT the result is bad! very dull colours and not calibrate colours to my eyes. What did i miss here? (1) Not downloading paper profile to my Lightroom? (2) Sending to print from my iPad Pro? (because first, i should export an image from lightroom mobile to ipad and then send to print from ipad through IOS). (3) not calibrating my display for print? (4) trusting Apple display (and i need to buy Benq special monitor)? or els? please advise.
Hi, It could quite easily be all 4 of the above! This video covers how to print in Lightroom but not anywhere near a colour manage workflow which is what you will need to fully understand to get all the colours right on your prints. I cover this full and in-depth in my online fine art print course at www.photoschool.nz/online-course-fine-art-printing/ which comes with over 5hr of videos and a book colour management - which is the most important part of printing to understand. Cheers, Richard
Amazing dedication. Epic.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh my! Nice to know my P900 will survive Richard's goofy printing location!
It will.... but I would recommend that printing at home is lot easier!
Love the photos Richard and your happy face
Thanks Ann :)
