The French Baroque... so official and stately. I just... love it.
Bellissima. False history, that Salieri in "Falstaff" relied on "The Marriage of Figaro" Mozart. He relied André Grétr's - "L’Amant jaloux" , 1778.; Joseph Schuster - "Il Marito Indolente", 1782.; Giovanni Paisiello - "Barber of Seville" 1782. - These 4 operas are plagiarized by Mozart in "The Marriage of Figaro " 1786.! And most importantly, for the history of music and ideas: the complicated finale of the first act of Sarti's opera also served as a model for the finale of the last act of Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. Unfortunately, there is no Sarti opera on the Internet. By the way, the duel in 1786. Salieri versus Mozart - let's remember - Who won? Emperor Joseph II, who liked to organize competitions between composers and operas, commissioned one-act comic operas on the same theme: "theatrical backstage" - by: Salieri and Mozart. Mozart to the German libretto by Stefani - "Der Schauspiel Director" KV 486, and Salieri to the Italian libretto by Casti - "Prima la musica e poi le parole". Both operas were presented to the public in Schönbrunn on February 7, 1786. Salieri's work won and proved the superiority of buffo opera(!)
❤

Justinian in the portrait has almost the same name as the protagonist of this opera - any relation?
assuming,of course, that this opera has any historical basis
@@campbellmays9900 Historically, Justin (Giustino in Italian) was the uncle of Justinian (Giustiniano).
This music expresses the majesty

Extraordinary. Excellently performed. How is it possible that these are not well-known arias? Why are they not performed? 2:47:11 "No, non si può soffrir" (Rodisette III, 10) 2:43:31 "Mir schmeichelt die Hoffnung, mich tröstet das Glücke" (Edronica III, 9) 26:34 "O ihr Sonnen, mehr als Sterne" (Edronica I, 5) 2:43:31 "Mir schmeichelt die Hoffnung, mich tröstet das Glücke" (Edronica III, 9) 1:54:18 ACT III 1:54:18 "Ach, Adon" (Coro III, 1) 1:57:33 "Weg Kummer, weg Sorgen!" (Cupido, Coro II, 1) 1:42:08 "Oh mio caro il mio cor" (Xantippe, Amitta II, 9) 2:09:03 "Voi, sfiorandovi ci mostrate" (Sokrates, Xenophon, Alcibiades, Pitho, Plato III, 3)
BELLISSIMA!!!!
They sure don't write 'em like THAT anymore (sadly). An absolutely stunning production. Kudos to everyone involved.
Magnificent and exciting opera.Magic music.Bravo!
What a delicious music!
To be part of this Opera performed in Innsbruck was a pleasure and honor❤ thank you Maestro Marcon
Wonderful, of course but always the same question : when in CD's...?
Magnifique. Merci
Grazie 🤩
One of the most stunning and evocative, expressive operas of its time. Rameau is criminally underrated.
I like French Baroque opera so much more than Italian now, which is reverse from how I felt growing up.
Sontuosa opera cantata da voci sontuose! Merita di essere riascoltata più volte! 😍
Grazie🤩
Ravishing masterpiece, first of its kind. And yet this is the man who in 1733 declared of Rameau, This man will eclipse us all!

That moment when you discover an Armide you haven’t listened to before :)
Man im so glad Hercules wasnt a castrato.
2:24:40
Saludos.
Bravissimi ! The three best "Armides" are: Handel, Jommelli and Sarti. A special feature of the libretto is that the dramatic development does not result from intrigues, as in Metastasio's texts, but from the inner conflicts of the protagonists. The power of Armida, who is initially far superior, gradually decays. Jommelli's music follows this dramatic development precisely and is unique in this respect compared to other contemporary operas. The composer did not limit himself to formal elements, but also interpreted the text in a picturesque way, motivically and harmonically. At the premiere on May 30, 1770 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, a first-class cast - Anna Lucia De Amicis (Armida), Giuseppe Aprile (Rinaldo), Apollonia Marchetti (Erminia), Arcangelo Cortoni (Tancredi), Pietro Santi (Rambaldo), Gerlando Speciali (Dano) and Tommaso Galeazzi (Ubaldo) sang.
I have had the CDs of this performance and think it a very fine opera, Jommelli is an exceptionally talented composer of Italian opera. Mozart heard Armida whilst in Naples in 1770 and in a letter to his sister notes that: ‘The opera playing here [in the magnificent Teatro San Carlo] is by Jommelli, it’s beautiful, but too learned and old-fashioned for the theatre’. (It is an opera seria). The much travelled Dr Burney described Jommelli as ‘…without doubt one of the greatest composers of the time’. My own view coincides with these opinions, and I think it worth adding that along with Gluck and Traetta, he is an important figure in the reform of opera seria in the mid/later 18th century. Regarding composers who set the Armida* story - whether abbandonata or not - the very long list is easily searched, picking out the ‘best’ Armida(s) is a debating point as there are some fine efforts including those you mentioned, to which I might add Lully and Gluck, as well as a string of Italians including Vivaldi, Anfossi, Gazzaniga, Righini, Sacchini, Salieri, and Cherubini (in fact over one hundred composers). The most notable omission from your list however is Haydn’s setting Haydn’s last Eszterhaza opera Armida was first performed 26 February 1784 and Haydn a few days later - clearly very proud of the work - wrote to his Viennese publisher after the second performance: ‘It is said that it is my best work to date’. (Haydn mentions his Armida elsewhere in very positive terms). HC Robbins Landon notes that with 54 performances at Eszterhaza, it was the single most performed work there by Haydn or any other composer; thus the work could be deemed Prince Nicholas’ favourite opera. I think Haydn’s setting is good, and does show that Haydn was aware of wider operatic reforms elsewhere, and that modern opera serie had to be more than just a series of showpiece numbers for famous singers; perhaps it deserves to join your ‘best’ list. * It really is better to stick with the original Italian spelling, rather than confuse the issue with later French, German or other variants as the story originates from Tasso’s La Gerusalemme liberata; the majority of libretti are Italian taken from Tasso; the exception is for specifically French Armide’s such that by Lully which has a French libretto (obviously based on Tasso) by Quinault.
I recognize most of these characters from the Handel opera, but who is “Rodisbe”? Handel’s version had no such character
According to the libretto, she is Cleopatra's nurse. The character has been removed in Handel's version.
Quest’esecuzione è mirabile: voci espressive, nitide e potenti rendono concreti i protagonisti. Giulio Cesare viva! 🎶🎶🎵🎵😊
How could Lully compose such beautiful music to this story full of dramatical weakness? Sorry to quinault, this plot is confusing.... but thanks to him for all those moments that Lully inspired to this wonderful music , making Amadis one of his best operas. Amadis is a miracle....
❤magnifique !
