When not working, you will find Dr Bowling spending most of her time with her husband and two boys 4 and 1.5, usually outside (rain, or shine) and often on bikes! In her free time she loves mountain biking, gravel biking, running, skiing, traveling and of course, cooking!

At the Salon:
We all know by now that the food we eat directly impacts our health. The risk of having a heart attack or developing diabetes, even certain cancers, has been shown to be related, in part, to the food we choose to eat on a daily basis. In my experience, most people want to be healthy, they want to feel well, and take fewer medications. They want to bring their cholesterol down without having to be on medication forever. But what advice should they follow? What should they cook for dinner? In this salon, Dr. Bowling will discuss how she guides patients when they are first diagnosed with pre-diabetes and fatty liver disease, what foods to incorporate and strategies for doing so.

    ive been listening to presentations in this topic. There is a contradiction that I cannot resolve, please help. On one hand, it is claimed that once your gut bacteria diversity gets blown, you cannot do anything, except - maybe - fecal transplant which has a lot of risks. But on the other hand, there is a claim that by touching soil when gardening and having pets will do the job for your without you even realizing. And then there is all the probiotic food and supplements, eating whole food plants, and all that in between. So whats the truth then? Can you increase the diversitiy of your microbiome on your own, without risky medical interventions?

    Correction: Your body stores carbohydrates as glycogen in the liver and muscles. EXCESS carbohydrates in your diet are stored as FAT. Very small amounts of protein can be converted to carbs (glucose) via gluconeogenesis.

    So not a medical Doctor. 🤔 There are many ways to eat healthy. My personal preference is….. Firstly avoid processed and ultra processed food. Secondly eat real food. Thirdly avoid what some people consider healthy food which is actually processed…flour, fruit juices, honey, syrups, sugars , starchy vegetables (including potatoes in all forms). Eat protein (fish, beef, chicken, pork, lamb, eggs etc). Eat leafy green veg (cabbage, broccoli, spinach, real lettuce not iceberg, kale, peppers, tomatoes) Mushrooms and edible fungi. Plenty of olive oil. Small quantities of dairy, full fat yogurts, kefir, cream, and cheese. Spices and herbs for flavour and for your gut. Small quantities of berries (blueberries, strawberries and raspberries). Have plenty of kimchi. A square of 99% chocolate as a treat every day. Coffee 2 hours after you wake and not after 12 MD. This will reverse metabolic syndrome affecting close to 50% of people in the developed world. You will feel less hungry and you’ll reverse a fatty liver allowing your liver to begin to function normally within 2 weeks.

    You say we get colonized by the microbes in our environment. But I've heard that probiotics often can't make it through our stomach acids to reach the gut. In one experiment, there was no transplanting of obese to lean, but just being together affected the other group. So, how do the manure we pick up on our hands or the soil microbes we get our hands dirty with, or the bugs we get from dogs or farm animals get in to colonize us?

    On a **personal** note, I agree with the statement that protein is not satiating in and of itself. The way I eat makes it extremely easy to vary protein content, and I have never experienced differences in satiety.

    Immense thanks to your program. I live in India and Dr Robert Lustig thoughts are very much applicable for us since we are CHO lovers even though we donot get to eat ultra processed foods since Indians still largely cook their food at home. But can we get answers regarding why despite we are not eating ultra processed foods since we do not get them any way, India is the diabetes capital of the world, is it because of NAFLD? What should we do? Where is the food for us if we do not take rice or wheat or jowar or Ragi or small millets?

    The pro-protein doctors claim it increases satiety leading to weight loss, and muscle mass which lincreases longevity.

    • @dogberry20
      @dogberry20 5 місяців тому

      It's true protein increases satiety, however the number one factor increasing satiety is bulk. Plant foods fill you up more for fewer calories. Sure 2 oz of steak might fill you up more than 2 oz of apples, but 200 calories of apples will fill you up more than 200 calories of steak. Also resistance training builds muscle, not protein.
