Jaki Byard 'Besame Mucho' Keystone Korner, San Francisco, 1978
Переглядів 6716 років тому
This performance of Besame Mucho is adventurous and, at the same time, completely accessible and fun. It's not that far removed from the extemporaneous rhapsodies of the great New Orleans pianist James Booker, who was coincidentally enjoying one of his career's best years in 1978 (Booker toured Europe that year and got some of the acclaim that never really came to him during his lifetime in the...

Alex Chilton - Live 1985-1999

There are several "interesting" live albums of Alex Chilton on the market one-off gigs in Europe with pick up bands ('Live in London', 'Live in Anvers'), late-70s New York "No Wave" gigs ('Ocean Club '77'), an acoustic gig played when the power went out at New York's Knitting Factory club during a late-90s gig ('Electricity by Candlelight'), Big Star sets documenting versions of that band in th...

Alex Chilton - "I Could Go for You in a Big Way" (Saint Louis, 1992)

Alex Chilton with Ron Easley, bass, and Doug Garrison, drums, live at Cicero's, Saint Louis, Missouri, January 23, 1992. The song is apparently an original by Alex that was never recorded in the studio. There's another version of this song on youtube, recorded two nights later at the Ax Lounge in Chicago, Illinois. Government Center - Alex Chilton sings Jonathan Richman 2007 & 1977
Переглядів 8 тис.8 років тому
Here are two versions of Jonathan Richman's "Government Center" sung by Alex Chilton. He played this song in the late 1970s in New York City with the band he dubbed "The Cossacks", and the second version here was supposedly recorded at the Ocean Club on April 19, 1977 with Lloyd Fonoroff on drums and Chris Stamey on bass. He didn't play this song much (if at all) during the years he toured freq...

Svenska Hotkvintetten 1939-1941

The Svenska Hotkvintetten : This little-known Swedish band (its name translated to English is the Swedish Hot Quintet) was closely modelled after the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. With violinist Emil Iwring and guitarists Sven Stiberg (single-string) and Folke Eriskberg (chordal) taking solos, this group was one of the hottest in existence during 1939-1941. Violinist Emil Iwring was almost...

I'd forgotten these gems. Available on Intégrale Django Reinhardt Vol 11 from French label Fremaux, though a slightly different sert order (Voux et Moi first)
Ja es geht immer weiter 😅
Django the founding father of European Jazz.(yours sincerely)
You are so right my friend Django was so much more. He didn,t know he was playing Gypsy Jazz he just played what came natural to him it was those that followed in his giant footsteps who labeled it gypsy jaz. And its been stagnating ever since. Django was always 2 steps ahead always exploring new ways of playing his last recordings show he anticipated be bop.
Heard this in a Mexican restaurant in Raleigh, NC yesterday
I don't get who's Jonathan and who's Alex, sorry I'm not very familiar with their music
Super pianiste en effet !!!!
Attention, cette photo a été prise par Serge Jacques, qui a aujourd'hui 97 ans. Merci de la créditer. J'ai un tirage original, et on peut s'en procurer encore en le contactant par mon intermédiaire.
The beautiful thing about this solo is that if you learn it, it frees you. It's like reading a revolutionary tract that changes your life.

Big part of my life listening to Django music

Ok, I discovered this particular cover via a podcast called “ The History of Rock Music in 500 Songs “ ! The author(?) of the podcast; Andrew Hickey ( a serious rock music scholar ) , is doing a two parter on “ Everyday People “. He mentioned all of the artists that covered the song, and he mentioned the seriously funky rhythm section backing ( gasp! ) THE FOUR FRESHMEN! I gotta say, I had a spit take moment! But!( and it’s a helluva big “ but “ ) damned if he wasn’t right! That is a funky rhythm track! It’s certainly a different take on it! 🤘
funny, that's exactly how I ended up here.
@@shaunsweeney995 that’s really cool! I need to send Mr. Hickey some money, I get entirely too much enjoyment from his hard work! 🤘 Have a great weekend ( it’s a long one if you’re in the U.S.!)
dank dank
Ha! Years ago I brought a friend to see Alex at SXSW and he only played these old standards, and they were wonderful! My friend just rolled his eyes. Haven't spoke to him since... 😎
Really enjoying these gems!😀😁🤩😇
Für mich der beste Gitarrist ❤❤❤❤❤
If I heard this album and had no information about the players I would swear it was Stéfanne, Django & Le Hot Club de France Quintet. Who is the Cool Cat playing rhythm guitar when Fapy is doing his Thing on this recording? Is it Fapy, Double Trackin' (à la Les :Paul)?
Great movie, as well!
Dude...We are in 2024 and as a modest guitarist for Grand Royal Tokyo, I was searching some CBS sessions recording where S. Grappelli and him had a fight because I am reading "Django" by Michael Dregni, I felt on these song and the first notes recorded here are just blowing my mind...Musicality. Dexterity added with this "je ne sais quoi" of insanity...! Thank you !
First time I had sex; seven years old. , with the guitar lol

Excellent masterpiece
Wow, I never knew Alex recorded these wonderful standards. I have, however, read the same tired journalism-by-numbers story too many times, with no mention of this. Thank You for posting this, it’s inspiring!
Glad you enjoyed these. The "Clichés" and "Songs from Robin Hood Lane" albums are among my favorite Chilton solo releases. Even in his wilder years in the 1970s and early 1980s, he was known to sing a standard or two. This somewhat ragged 1981 recording of an old Johnny Mathis hit is, imho, great fun: ua-cam.com/video/TLcsJL-7J2A/v-deo.html
Of course he did.
This is wonderful

Saw Alex (and Jonathan) many, many times but never heard sing this. In fact, the first time I heard Alex (probably 1984 or 85) he played an opening solo set for Jonathan w/Andy Paley at Jimmy's, New Orleans.
Based on the setlists I've seen for dozens of Alex Chilton concerts from 1984 to 2000, he didn't play this regularly, if at all. From what I can tell, he didn't like to spring totally random tunes on his rhythm section unless they were pretty widely known and simple R&B/R&R classics like "Duke of Earl" or something. His late-1970s NYC band obviously knew this tune (maybe one of them like Chris Stamey even turned Alex on to it), and Yo La Tengo knew it (hence the later version here), but my guess is that he never ran through it with the guys he toured regularly with.
@@zenobardot I see Doug Garrison (drums) and René Coman (bass) all the time; I will ask.
@@benjaminlyons9676 That's very cool. I enjoyed reading about them in the Chilton biography from a few years back. Storming around North America in that 1973 Buick. And Coman and Alex playing covers at Papa Joes for World's Fair tourists who picked songs from a list on the table in the summer of 1984. What I find fascinating is that Alex seemed to have plenty of club gigs worldwide from 85-90, despite the general unavailability of the Big Star stuff and his extremely low profile from 1975-1984. I guess world of mouth kept the flame alive? I know people paying close attention to college rock would have been aware of the 1987 song by the Replacements and praise from REM, etc. but it still surprises me that this was enough to get gigs on two continents during those first years back on the scene.
I love that piano's left hand
The best….
BRILLIANT ! Sorry J.R. but I think I prefer this
Super l incroyable django
That is DJANGO on violin on the 2nd song BLUES MINEUR -
Also, a lot of people don't know that Stéphane Grappelli's first instrument was the piano. I saw and heard him play both instruments in concert way back in another century and, believe it or not, he was just as great on the 88's as he was on the violin.
