My advice to you would be to put aside your feelings of the so called solidarity & peacefulness of the everyday lay muslims you come across since most religious followers, which includes Christians, Hindus, & Buddhists know very little about their own religion. Many of the people I know personally who call themselves Hindu, Muslim or Buddhist have never read any of their foundational scriptures. Perhaps it is for this very reason that they are able to remain in solidarity? In the case of Islam you should go straight to researching the Quran & the history of Islam from an unbiased standpoint. Look up the views of mainstream Islamic teachers who agree with the death penalty for apostasy. Look up videos of ex Muslims as to the reasons why they left Islam. Remain critical.
