Kimberley Reps as movie extras
This is extracted from a CD compilation by Terry Kellett. It shows different members of the Kimberley Reps and Music Hall fraternity fooling around and singing at the Big Hole Museum during the filming of Scotty Smith.
They are all so young and beautiful, frozen like that in my memory.
The CD is full of Terry Kellett's whimsical humour. What a cheerful, creative and optimistic man he was!

Potato Tower Harvest
Переглядів 96Рік тому
After receiving a gift of some Dutch Cream seed potatoes and planting them in a mesh tower, it was harvest time. The tower was dismantled and there was potato hunting from top to bottom. The yield wasn't disappointing and, having started with 20 seed potatoes, I ended up with about 60 edible ones. Not a bad result. I left it too long before harvesting and I noted that a small percentage of pota...

Ryobi plunge router not for table
Переглядів 6 тис.2 роки тому
I have bad memories of my Ryobi plunge router. I bought it at least 8 years ago when I was making my rotating tool station. I had all sorts of problems using it and the results were imperfect to say the least. I blamed my inexperience and packed it away, and never used it again for 8 years. Then I had an idea: why not mount it under a table as a table router? This led me to have another look at...
Kingston with Miguel and Sonia Dec 2020
Переглядів 393 роки тому
Travelled to Kingston on Thursday 10th Dec and built a porch on the undercroft. Miguel and Sonia arrived at midday the following day (11th). Went for walk; had crayfish lunch with Riesling; walked the block (wombat burrows); drove around Kingston; had schnitzels and beer at the Crown Inn; saw Kingston Christmas Parade; bet money and lost it on horse races; did insect collection that evening; wa...
Baby Clothes Drying Rack
Переглядів 814 роки тому
Originally this drying rack was designed for cloth nappies. One can peg 19 cloth nappies by the two top corners onto the rack at once and carry them outdoors to dry in the sun and wind. Should rain come, you can grab the rack, fold it up and take the whole lot indoors at once. Once our babies were out of nappies we discovered how useful the rack could be for many small items of baby clothing. O...

The usual trip to our bush-block down at Kingston. This time to install some door-stoppers for the caravan. I did some serious weed spraying as well.
Restoring Maria's Washstand
Переглядів 804 роки тому
Before baths and showers there were washstands for the daily ablutions using a jug and an enamel basin on a washstand. My grandparents, Harry and Maria Kokkinn, started off poor and lived in Craven Street, Kimberley, South Africa in a tin shanty. It was there that my father Robert McGregor was born in 1920 with the midwife having to come in the pouring rain. That's where, I imagine the austere ...
Enclosing a pergola in Adelaide
Переглядів 1524 роки тому
Adelaide is famous for its nuisance garden mosquitoes (usually Aedes notoscriptus). A trip to water the garden can't often be contemplated without a covering of mosquito repellant. Sitting outside and having an evening drink requires similar protection and that means having a compulsory shower before going to bed. A visit to Hans Heysen's house, The Cedars, up at Hahndorf (highly recommended) w...
Mike's October 2019 Kingston Trip
Переглядів 235 років тому
It had been five moths since I had been down to the Kingston block and I was keen to try out my new wildlife camera. Besides, I always worry about the place being vandalised. All was fine down there with a gorgeous late Spring day on the Wednesday followed by an overcast cool day the next. I was disappointed the I wasn't able to capture any wombats on the camera. At first, I assumed it was a pr...

Burnie to Hobart Tasmania
Переглядів 755 років тому
From Corinna we traveled to Burnie and along the north coast of Tasmania to Launceston where we spent two nights. From Launceston we drove south on the Midland Highway, with its long stretches of roadworks, to the historical village of Richmond. Our flight on the obligatory Jetstar back to Adelaide was bearable.
Corinna on the Pieman River
Переглядів 5625 років тому
A twisting turning road from Strahan leads to The Pieman River but then you have to pay $26 to get across to the tiny settlement of Corinna. There you will find the hotel with its wooded chalets and a restaurant that serves dishes fit for a metropolitan palate. The cruise down the Pieman River in the Huon pine Arcadia II is a joy and it leads to a fishing settlement and a log-strewn beach where...
Macquarie Harbour Gordon River
Переглядів 255 років тому
Starting at Strahan, the cruise went out onto Macquarie Harbour and through Hell's Gate, the very narrow entrance to a harbour bigger than Sydney's. A stop was made on Sarah Island, Australia's most brutal penal colony, where guided tours were both informative and entertaining. Thence up the Gordon River with its Nothophagus- covered steep banks and onto a boardwalk through the riparian vegetat...
Hobart to Queenstown

When on our Tasmanian holiday we drove to the West Coast from Hobart. In Queenstown, we stayed in the Mine Manager's House now converted to a B&B. Much of the house has been preserved and staying there gave us an idea of the privileged life the boss must have led. We also saw the environmental consequences of air pollution from the mine with surrounding mountains burnt bare by sulphuric acid ra...

Dust Collection in a Small Workshop
Trying to use a tool in a way that it was not intended to be used and you are sulking and running it down. Mate this is a bullshit review full of misinformation.
Its not a bad router, but you dont understand fully how to use it, the depth gauge is very easy, there is a losen and tighten screw then you turn and set, then tighten it back up, not the thing you thought was the loosener, you had it backwards as well, the trigger doesnt go on the left hand it goes in the right, very easy to use the trigger and button lock. But if you look at some uses and guides on it you will see its highly rated. I wish you all the best in your wood works =)
The manual was crap.
So nice,
Glad you mentioned the problems. Just acquired a Ryobi router table which won't fit my Bosch router. Thought of investing in a Ryobi router. But no.
Hey uncle Mike!
Nah, you're being unfairly harsh. You are going to have much of the same obstacles with most brands of routers. I have the same ryobi router, I use it as intended and it has not let me down. I recently fixed up a cheap router table using a crappier plunge router. I have found I don't need to access the router too often. The router is locked on and the power switch on the table is used. Bit change overs are mostly done by bringing the collet above the table and just reaching under to activate the locking mechanism. Biggest challenge was fighting against the spring to get the right height adjustment. I added a simple lifter for that (a car jack). My point being, most of your concerns wouldn't be an issue if the router was used on a table. On the other hand, my work uses a trim router on their routing table and that works perfectly fine. Superior in some ways as it easier to handle.
Found the same design and intending to make it myself for my garage workshop. Great to see another unsure woodworker make something successfully - maybe I can too. Interestingly enough, I think I live about 30 minutes from you in Chirnside Park.
Go for it!
Use a few clues and it works fine in a router table
.
That opening scene is Mount Bryan not Hallett
Thanks Robert, I was in the hands of my companion's background knowledge. One day, I'll go back and make another video. You know, I've been so surprised by the interest in this video. It's an indication of the significance of the area to so many South Australians. Regards, Mike
Went through Petersborough back in 1978, had my HK Monaro repaired there, nice little town.
I lived in Peterborough about 30 years ago in my mid twenties. A great town and you're right it does deserve saving so much history of this place that most south australians don't know
Many features in this state could do with some inspired development . Not sure our political system can provide it.
Why don't you just cook and eat the tiny potatoes? They would still taste good.
Yes,I did.
In the 1990's, there was a sheep sale at Peterborough.........next morning the live stock carrier came to pick them up, and the sheep were dead...........from a severe snap frost.
Nasty image. I guess we're going to get used to more extremes in the future.
8 or 10 years ago? That's a much more recent model.
Which router did you go with? I'm loking at the Makita which has pretty good depth adjustment.
I always buy Makita these days. Having said that I haven't bought a new router yet, having given the Ryobi away.
Also wondering this; I have the plunge router and all my bits, I need a good trim router that can fit the same bits
At least you have the attachable fence...the fence for my Ryobi plunge router supposedly exists but is not available for purchase *anywhere*
But it's not meant to be put under a table. I've had no troubles with mine. Although I agree the instruction manuals are hopeless.
What kind router table do you have buddy..? Because im thinking to this kind of router under the universal router table.. thanks in advance mate..
It's not a truck, it's a ute. We're in Australia
Like my Dad’s paper in Jamestown.
During winter the sand in the cave at Remarkable Caves washes away. As well as most of the sand that you were walking on when you were at the beach bit there! During summer is when the smaller swells come in and brings the sand back in. Amazing place of the world!
Hi Mike, thanks for the nice video and great explanation! It seemed to me that ants were highly associated with the Oxalis in my lawn, and that they possibly spread the seeds too! I'm in the process of photographing the life history of Lucia limbaria which is present in my lawn this year, and got interested in finding out more about this interesting association between two insects and a plant!
Hi Andrew, Good to hear from you. Lucky to have the checkered copper in your back yard. All the best, Mike
@@michaelkokkinn6663 Hi Mike, great to hear back from you! Looks like you are enjoying your retirement and keeping busy with lots of activities and projects! I'll be looking forward to seeing future videos, especially of the block and its resident arthropods and reptiles etc!
This video definitely deserves more likes. I have a question about blended oats: sometimes it is not easy to chew row oats, what should I do in order to use it row in chewable manner?
I've never eaten raw oats apart from the oat bran which is fine grained. However oats which has been soaked in just the right amount of boiling water for an hour until it's swells up with a sliced banana mixed through makes a great dessert and can't be bad for gut health. All the best, Mike.
Thanks so much for the attention to the gates and controls. Most of the videos don't show that!
Thanks Carrie. Always wanted to go back, and do the trip from Fort Willam to Inverness . I'm glad my little video was useful. Sometimes an interest in the mechanics of things is enriching. All the best, Mike

Thanks Shane. Peterborough holds a special place in my heart.
Very good. I like your video. Ive a small workshop and in the process of setting up my dust collection. Love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks Andrew. Love from Adelaide.
This explains why ants took a liking to my purple Shamrock potted in my house. They're all over the pot and had white things in their mouths.

Hey you interviewed when I was a little kid here my name is Craig
It's lovely!
Love this so much
I enjoyed watching your video. I'll be making that soon.
Hi Michael Just came across ur film about Peterborough. Really well done, very interesting. I was born there in 1959. My father was in the railways from when he left school till his retirement. I hadnt been back until a few years ago. The thing i noticed was how 'clear & clean' the air was & how quiet it was...pity its so outa the way Thanks for ur story :)

In such cases, I split the bulky volume into two, and bind them separately as hardback in the normal manner. As the book is glued and not signature stitched, it is easy to split the volume.
Hello. How large is the diameter?
1metre
..great job, thanks for sharing :)

i lived in wonderful peterborough from 1988 to 1995 and lived in terowie before that, i loved it and im 44 now and have plans to move back in the very near future
Hi William, It's the sort of place that deserves rescuing. It gained my affection in a very short space of time. Regards, Mike
for your rollers pack with paraffin it will quite them and lubricate without grease
Hi Jasen, thanks very much for the tip. I'll give it a try. Regards, Mike.
Wish I'd seen this before deciding to buy a more expensive beating than the amazon ones. My engineers recommended a high quality oil. Cheers
I really enjoyed your video Michael it gave me ideas to build one soon. I like the way you did your drawers and the carousel. I like what you used for the center post or pipe. I’ve seen others use pvc but yours I would think is much stronger. Anyway keep up the good work and hopefully you’ll get the tools you’ve been wanting soon.
Hi Wolly. Thanks for your comment. Let me know if you want a copy of the plans. In answer to your question about the tools, we were scammed by someone pretending to be the tax office and lost a heap of money, so new tools are on the wish list for when the savings build up again. So, for the time being, I have a very useful rotating table with drawers in my workshop!
Hi Wolly,. I have just set up a dust collection system using a small cyclone and a shop vac. At last I am ready to buy a dust generating chop saw.

Dear Haim, so sorry not to have answered earlier; I have been away in Europe.. The diameter of the carousel is 500mm. I have just measured it and, it actually is 506mm which may be a conversion from Imperial. Hoe this is not too late. All the best, Mike.
Can you please know the diameter of the table?
Nice job, Mike. If anyone is looking for the plans for this project, we now have them available on our plans site here: www.woodsmithplans.com/plan/revolving-tool-station/
I left Peterborough in 1989. It was a ghost town then. Most of the shops had closed down, and there were nobody around.
You might know my aunt and uncle who live live there
The term for ants is elaiosomes. So if ants are responsible for dispersing seeds it is called myrmecory.
