These are great ships but unfortunately cost of operation [which was very high thanks to high fuel cost and logistical issues in supplying and servicing the fleet at sea with their homeport in San Diego], include the lack of investment to refine and perfect the problematic modular systems (normal with every new system) and the budget cutters came calling. After all the investment (more than $3 billion) in these ships and their incredible potential, they have been mothballed and put in deep storage, the Freedom was decommissioned in September of 2021. Likely to only ever be seen again on the open sea if there was a war or some friendly nation with a lot of low draft waters to defend that was willing to buy them. These ships were built to be rapid interceptors and pirate interdiction vessels in coastal waters. Thus the installed fuel hungry propulsion system of 2 × Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbines (36 MW (48,000 hp) each) that pushed these 3,400 (long)ton vessels to a staggering 47 knots (87 km/h; 54 mph) in class 3 seas. The modular systems allowed for them to conduct anti-sub patrols, mine laying and sweeping operations, coastal patrols, anti-pirate operations, and other similar duties. Most of their patrols in their brief service life were in the Oceania and Indonesian sea region, far from their homeport in San Diego. Just returning to base to fit a new module or undergo regular maintenance meant a huge fuel cost. Of course the solution would have been to base them in the region but this was never considered.
