23 Degree, Not Too Cold For Me! Straight Key J-38 CW POTA on 40 Meters With the Trusty IC-705
After not being able to transition to the J-38 on my FT-891 farewell, I wanted to dedicate some time to get back on manually sending some beeps and bloops.
It was cold outside. The bench was cold. I was cold. My key was cold. The bands were on fire though. Ha.

Helping the KT0ADS Club Activate Virginia For Parks on the Air with a 20 WPM CW Activation on 20M

Even though I didn't win anything (for multiple years running), I wanted to help out KT0ADS in achieving their activate all 50 states goal. They needed Virginia, and I was in a geographically advantageous position (I live in VA) to help out. Featuring a little snow man my son left in my truck that I felt fit the temperature well. I was worried I'd jack up the KT0ADS call vs my own, and boy did ...
My Final Activation With My FT-891 - It Needs Someone That'll Use It More - CW POTA 18-20 WPM

The end of an era, as I've sold and shipped my first "real" radio purchase because I just don't use it as much as it deserves. Ever since transitioning to CW, I find myself only reaching for the FT-891 as a "eh, might as well" and each time I'm reminded why I never pick it. Power consumption and resultant battery mass aside, I just don't think it hears very well. I find that I'm always at a poi...
18 WPM CW POTA Post Marine Corps Marathon Volunteering (I stood and watched others run) with N0SA M7

My first activation in what seems like ages. I was part of an amateur radio group volunteering for the Marine Corps Marathon that I learned about visiting the HRO in Woodbridge, VA. I manned the 7.5 mile marker and was a communications point for the runners, Marines, and emergency personnel. I was relieved earlier than expected, so I slipped away for some improv POTA action. I was using the front facing camera for the mobile portion, you can tell from the horrible quality. I had another exciting VA activation using a J-38 key that I've had for many years but seldom use. Getting Indiana Activated with an 18 WPM CW POTA Activation at Beaver Bottom Lake (No bottoms seen)

First off, I was incorrect about the lack of CW activations at the couple parks I looked at in Indiana. There are many between the two parks and my quick looking skills failed me. Haha, whoopsies. I was just there last weekend testing my setup. Love that park!
I only recently found this place and haven't ventured too far into it. Granted it's been <40 degrees and the midst of winter, but the bathrooms are warm and the tables are good operating spots, lol. Maybe we'll run into each other there some time. Thanks for watching!

@@CoaxAndCampstoolslol. Dude I thought I was tough activating in 35 degrees today then you post this :). Man I gotta get my straight key fist going!!
I can't one-up your key collection... or your CW-prowess... or your pink socks... or you charming good looks... All I had was the mustache, and that's gone. All that's left is to out chilly your activations. I know what I must do, I just don't know if I'm strong enough to do it.
Thanks!
That was wild that you used another sign, there's some clubs and I think Auburn U that hunt me on CW POTA. My work has a club and station and separate call sign, but I have to get the cojones to meet with the professor who runs it. 73 Paul
It's a whole new muscle memory. The professor would probably be thrilled to have another person to work the club gear. The more the merrier!
So you're trying to garner favor with Steve so maybe you'll finally "win" something?
Shhh, don't say it out loud. It won't work then. (plz pick me streamyard)
I would gladly be the donor of the 891 😂 got my ticket at the end of November and could use a solid portable rig for pota. Just throwing that out there hahahahahah love the content!
Lol, FT-891 is a solid rig to start on, as well as grow with. You would be starting off right with one. I was fortunate to be able to sell mine to a newly minted Tech who will hopefully put it to use more often than I did.
@ yeah they are solid, prob will snag one for mobile and easy pota. I scooped a 991a cause I thought I wanted a “shack in the box” w/ the ability to do 100w if needed but turns out there isn’t much activity on 2m/70cm around my little town. Kinda wish I had went with a dx10/710 but I love 991a. I’ll end up with one of those two plus a 891 and eventually a 101mp before it’s over. I’ve got the bug now 😂
I find the 891 as a solid QRO POTA Rig, especially when paired with a 100Ah battery. Not heavy for walking to a bench. I sold my first one a long time ago. Just bought one again for QRO POTA for 100W CW & SSB. I use my KX2 for SOTA and POTA QRP. I would never drag my 891 to a summit. But POTA? Absolutely.
100 Ah battery is a big boi! I'd need a cart for all that. It is a very capable radio, absolutely agree. I'm hopeful that my future radio(s) are able to fill the hole that selling the 891 has left.
Awesome! The Marine Corps Marathon was the first marathon I ever ran (a few years ago). Just found your channel. Nice job!
I'm not the marathon type, but I'll help out at one! ha. Thanks for watching! It's the 50th Marine Corps Marathon this year.
@coaxandcampstools Yes, my buddy is always trying to get me to run it again but I’m done with marathons after 3 😂 I ran the NYC marathon in November and saw a few support hams. I’ll be running both Cherry Blossom races in DC this year though!
Happy New Year, CnC. I got my license this year and my first radio is the FT-710. I bought it on sale for 800 and some change, but I'm portable only and I lug that beast on my back several days a week and always battle having enough battery life. It's also a very cool damn radio, I'm learning about these 1.25m, 2m, 80m, etc. bands!
Happy new year, Paul! Congrats on the license! Now the journey begins. My FT-710 should be arriving tomorrow. We'll be FT-710 buddies. I'll be lugging it out to the field at some point too. Thanks for watching!
Glad that ND went downrange and nobody got hurt! I'm also glad that my terrible fist makes it easy to pick me out of a pileup 😁
Nah, I muted the guy in the background yelling "Ahh, my leg!" after the ND so it seemed like no one got hurt. Always happy to hear your "terrible fist"

Guilty as charged. "Roger Roger" and if it's important they'll say it again... maybe.
Thanks for supporting our troops. Fb activation om. DC would be a cool spot to activate. Nice M7. I’m a bag guy so I’ll take your recommendation.
Aside from the mast, everything should fit in your tactical fanny packs you've been rocking. Just put it in your pocket, then people can ask "Is that a mast in your pocket or are you just excited to POTA?!" When I'm feeling courageous, I'll do some capital mall shenanigans. That's a lot of people in not a lot of space for me to content with.
Fun video!
G90 gets it done. Thanks for watching!
I activated West Virginia after a 7-hour drive. I hadn’t even considered the prefix WV until I was already replying to my first return call. My brain just shut down.
Lol, the first "5NN ......... WV" takes a bit. Roadtrips get you too because you have to remember what state you're in.
I wrote my legacy with KH1 low power please show me some respect. those pink headphones go kinda hard tbh...
Maybe I was talking about someone else... Not that many people make that mistake. Pink headphones would match your shorts and socks. They'd see your drip from space.
Bittersweet to see an activation in the Michigan woods, I grew up in the Thumb. If my dad had got to see POTA, guys none of us would have gotten rid of him.
My wife introduced me to the Michigan mitten and "I'm from *points to spot on hand* here in Michigan." The thumb would mean nothing to me otherwise, lol.
Hello fellow Jason! Good to get you in the log again today my friend, and my first bug QSO no less! Thanks for sticking in there with me lol. Glad you're enjoying running around to all these new states. My only out of state POTA was in Ohio. I had 9 contacts and I'm pretty sure that I sent KY to at least 4 of them! 73's de KO4TFE dit dit
We stick in there with eachother, lol. Between me messing up your call nearly every single time and you on your bug, it's all good. It was nice getting you in the log over the last few activations. Thanks for hunting!
"Man was fighting demons in a porta potty"...........................ha ha that made my day, we both have the same twisted sense of humor.
I'm amazed it didn't make it into the mic with as loud as that guy was. He was in there for a long time and was nice enough to close the door all the way after about 15 minutes. Thanks for watching!
It is sort of funny that all the builders of this thing are so particular about where the dit and dah wires go. The paddle is symmetrical. All you need to do is turn it over in your hand... regardless of wire placement. Another thing that is peculiar is that everyone is buying these sensors for around $14. I am betting you could replicate the design of the sensor with circuit board traces and have OshPark make it as part of the circuit board and save $14. I doubt that there is anything special about the sensors. It is just a spiral or interwoven trace. The glue on the back of the sensor is just another point of failure. A sure way of testing the "pressure sensing" capability of the sensor is to monitor its resistance while pressing on it with an insulated object. I'm betting it will register "no change" because it operates through the skin resistance of your fingers. Let me know...
I'd say the only reason the wires matter is because of the assumed "front" of the key having all the components on it, but yes it doesn't really matter. Interesting idea with using circuit board traces as the capacitive component. I'm not electrically inclined enough to know whether that could work or not. From what I remember: As to the third point, the sensors are capacitive through interdigitated conductors. The plastic enclosure has some... give to it with an air gap separating the conductive layers slightly. Pressing the key reduces the capacitance enough that the circuitry overcomes the gap. There's a word for the gap that I can't remember currently. I'll try to dig up my key and get back to you about that. If I'm wrong I'll tell you :)
@@CoaxAndCampstools - In VK3IL's blog he describes how the bias on his FET gates is operated by a voltage divider which, when his sensor is touched, drops the resistance from >10 meg ohms down to less than 20 K ohms which results in a jump in gate voltage (95% of the drain voltage) that triggers the FET to fully conduct. I have a hard time believing that the "pressure" sensors are anything more than two conductors designed in a spiral. When I take my DVM and put it's sensitivity to 200K, then touch the lead tips, the resistance drops down to say 130 K from infinite resistance. Given the length of the spiral, it is reasonable to think that the drop is proportional to the length of the spiral and how much of it is "touched" when activating the FET key switch. One could set the (open switch) voltage at the gate with two actual resistors and then trigger the gate (raise the voltage) by putting the spiral sensor in parallel with the resistor across the gate/drain if the spiral doesn't drop the resistance far enough on its own. I'm certain this would work and could be accomplished by just making the spiral out of traces and as an integral part of the circuit board. I don't have the means to design or fabricate the idea but does it really matter what causes the voltage increase at the gate? The cost of the touch paddles would be reduced by 50%. Also there is no compelling reason to design the thing with difficult tiny SMD parts, given the parts count is so low. I would recommend a TRS connector as well. I notice that Adam K6ARK's touch paddles operate on an entirely different design philosophy - sensing a change in capacitance rather than a change in resistance. I'd be interested to know if the sensors you have actually drop in resistance when pressed with a purely insulated object, like glass or plastic. If it doesn't drop, then the sensor is not sensing pressure, but is sensing your skin resistance. (I could be wrong about the sensors as I've never had a chance to play with them. As a design consideration, I think the pull-up resistors in the dit/dah inputs is about 1K for most uControllers. VK3IL uses a 470 K resistor for his source/drain bias so the drop in sensor resistance easily swamps the source/gate resistor and causes the triggering of the FET. Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate the conversation.
Instead of tuning off zero beat you can just use rit to transmit slightly off and still stay on the zero beat frequency
Definitely. XIT too. It's easier for me to just tune slightly off freq though. I suppose I could just leave RIT/XIT on while I'm scrolling around hunting, but I honestly didn't think of that until typing this out.
Nice key! I still have one of those but need to refinish it. 73 DE NØIP
It's a nice vintage key. Probably older than I am, but works well. Thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks for sharing. I'm going to try the boiling method of stripping the lacquer off: 1 tablespoon baking soda in 1 quart of water, stir a couple of times, insert the brass into the boiling solution for 15 minutes.
Thanks for watching. I've never heard of that method, but I'm curious to hear how it turns out. Sound much less tedious than my buffing method. The key is still going strong almost a year later. Watch out for the small plastic retention ball thing that's retaining the magnets. It's under spring tension and will launch if you give it the opportunity. Let me know how it turns out!
Hi again. On second thought, I'm going to use your method. Probably NOT a good idea to boil the plastic Parts! I verified, and mine also has the plastic.

You're right, the stress was there though. We all got through it. Thanks for watching!
Ngl bro you went from looking like your 401k might fund next week to maybe graduating high school last week with one shave of the stache. great to see a straight key activation-great sending! What word per minute do you think you where sending at? I'm learning with a straight key myself and you seemed very smooth
Thank you! Something satisfying (and stressful) about using a straight key, especially given this key is probably older than I am. Reverse Beacon Network clocked me at around 14-15 WPM, so ballpark around there. Thanks for watching!
Man I can't wait to level up to 18 wpm. It sounds so much better, I can almost grasp some.
Fastest way to get to 18 WPM is get on the air at whatever you can. I started at 14 WPM and had a blast. Sometimes I still only grasp some, lol. Thanks for watching!

@@CoaxAndCampstools He was a real trooper. In addition to the antenna disaster, I was overvolting him b/c I didn't have the right battery with me, and turned off overvoltage protection, so I knew I was playing with fire anyway! Hope to get you in the log from the East coast soon!
If you really do shave your mustache (because USPS prioritized me in their distribution queue) you should do so carefully and mail me your stache so I can wear it on my channel. I tried growing one on my own a few months ago but was met with overwhelmingly negative feedback from my subscribers. While I do appreciate you publishing CW content… I did unfortunately have to report this video to UA-cam due to its lack on inclusivity towards west coast operators who are unable to participate in daytime 40m pileups. P.S. I’ll send you some non-organic full-GMO 100-proof deet bug spray.
Unfortunately my video editing delay has caused the hair on my upper lip to be lost forever. There may be a strand or two hiding behind the faucet. While my morals have prevented me from mailing shaven hair to another man up to this point in life, I can make an exception for you. While I respect your sensitivity, nothing prevented my west coast friends from spending 47 cents a minute to remote into a Maine station to hunt my on 40 meters. Therefore, my inclusivity threshold should have been met for UA-cam Standards. I need the good stuff, bro. I may as well have a T-Shirt that says "No Mosquitos Allowed"
Nice job on the video! Do you have a link to the little rope tensioners that you use? N7BBQ
Thank you! I'm not 100% which your referring to, so I'll give links to both. The actual thing that I'm zig zagging my wire through is a Wire Antenna Link by K6ARK on Printables: www.printables.com/model/326108-wire-antenna-links What I use as my guy-line winder to tension the overall line is another K6ARK product, his K6ARK Wire Antenna Winder: www.printables.com/model/383037-k6ark-wire-antenna-winder-ul-wireframe-model That winder just has 550 cord around it that I wrap/unwrap depending on how far I need. Thanks for watching!
It is the little red metal? Piece that you used to adjust the tension on the guy ropes. It is at approx 7:27 in the video.
@@rclewen lol, I linked everything but what you were looking for. Link below. Off Amazon: a.co/d/ezqTR7V They work very well on 550 cord with the internal strands, and good enough on the gutless 550 cord that I use. Certainly well enough to tighten down antenna wires.
@@CoaxAndCampstoolsthanks! That’s perfect! N7BBQ
Cool we get it there’s a lot of 40m ops on the east coast
You probably could have worked them... oh wait, you're in UT, which stands for "Ur Too far for 40m"
OK, I ended up printing quite a few of these so that I could dial in my printer for PETG. Today I got my order of the same type of wire that you used, so I was able to build one. Did the typical 49:1 unun on a stacked pair of FT37-50 cores and a 150 pF cap parallel to the low-Z side. Cut a wire to 66 ft and trimmed it up to a nice match on 40/20/15/10. Works great, thanks! My only small suggestion would be you might want to make the wire holes just a tiny big bigger, as it was a tight fit to get the 24 AWG silicone wire in there. I'll post a make on Printables and have a small commentary on it on my next Substack post.
Beautiful, thank you for the feedback. I'll widen the strain relief holes and drop a V2 on printables. How much power are you pushing through the stacked FT37s? I think I have some that I bought not realizing how small they were that never left the original packaging.
@@CoaxAndCampstools I wasn't planning on doing more than 5 watts, but I haven't even made a QSO on it yet, just swept it with the antenna analyzer. I think 5 watts should be OK, but it might need a size a bit bigger, not sure yet.
@@CoaxAndCampstools There's a couple of popular EFHW unun kit that I'm pretty sure use one FT50-43 core, and advertises as good for 5 watts CW, so a double-stacked core of the same type is probably just fine.
Need. More. Stache. Footage.
Nice sleuthing!

Radio costs too much I'll just make my own *clown face, egg plant, water droplets* (I'm on PC)

More like MountGoat-Mode
That was our “covid” vacation. Seems like a lot of other people had the same idea. 😆 We liked it so much in South Dakota, we moved there 2 years later. Everyone seems to need SD in cw mode. So that’s fun.
It was a lot of fun activating Idaho, Wyoming, and South Dakota. A few very beautiful states up north. I wasn't too fond of SD once it turned into the plains, but the 80 mph speed limit sure was nice.
See, this is why I need at KH1❤

KH1 GOAT. It really is a nice little radio.
Thanks, have printed one in PETG and it looks good! Will try to build one soon and try it out. 73 DE NT7S
Cool to hear someone making something you came up with. Let me know how it works for you, or if the design needs a tweak. Thanks for watching!
If I understand right the capacitor is to bring the upper bands (6m) in to the ham band. Somewhere i thought I learned that capacitors tend to fail shorted so having 2 in series can offer a level of protection. I have not been able to identify that though. de ki7cia 73
Interesting. Maybe that's why I never really noticed a difference only looking at where the 10 meter dip fell. I'll have to take a look at the 6 meter dips the next time I'm playing around with it. Thanks!
My wife said “gross” out loud at that hair tie. But I swiftly corrected her and told her that Mr. 1000 isn’t to be spoken to that way. I’m so stoked I bought a 3D printer and don’t know how to use it and every time it prints it creates a blob of death so now it’s just sitting in my garage. Would love to print some stuff like that but for now I’ll keep paying people on Etsy. Nothin better than homebrew in the field. 73 om es cul MM, de KI7QCF. Dit dit
That's adorable that you and Mrs. KI7QCF watch radio UA-cam together. My wife's eyes glaze over the second I start talking about radio. In my defense, the hair tie seemed pretty new. I don't think there was even that much hair in it when I found it. dit dit.
Great video! Would some hot glue on the bnc connection alleviate some of the concern about the durability?
Hmm... That will either put more bulk there causing more stress on that joint (because it hits more stuff), or it will help keep everything in place and prevent joint fatigue over time. I'm not sure, but that seems like a good idea to try. Now I just need to find a glue gun, lol.
Nice find! A right angle connection for the bnc would be nice.
I have some elbows, I'll throw one on and see if it makes a difference. Most times I feel like the bulkhead is pointing right at me when I'm using the antenna and the elbow wouldn't do much. One way to find out! Thanks for watching!
