Math intervention, neurobiology, and cognitive-based learning - Jonily Zupancic and Cheri Dotterer are sharing how to incorporate them into your classroom. Jonily is a secondary math teacher and instructional coach for math K-12. Cheri is an occupational therapist specializing in neurology-based treatment across the lifespan and a Strategy-based Interventionist.
Jonily has discovered how to teach all Kindergarten through algebra math standards using twelve, that’s right, twelve Reference Tasks. They include the Pizza Problem, 120-Chart, Paper Folding, Making Rectangles, Quick Dots, Locker Problem, Jesse and Kay, Geoboard, Candy Problem, Paint Problem, Staircase, and the Function Machine.
Cheri uses Body-Brain Anchors to ignite the flame inside everyone’s brain for learning. These Brain-Body Anchors include the Handstand Flip, Interlaced Bilateral Integration, and the Body Sentence Alphabet.

This podcast has helped me be a better math teacher and my students improve their skills tremendously. Teaching long division strikes fear in all my students. However, using skip counting to introduce division, as Jonily suggests, allowed every one of my students to get this problem correct: 8.5/0.5=17. They all could skip count by 0.5 until they reached 8.5. It took them 17 skip counts. How gratifying to have all students get it correct on their own!! After listening to this podcast and attending free Saturday Math sessions with Jonily and Cheri, my teaching has changed for the betterment of my students!
The emphasis is on passing the test. Not data assimilation for practicality. In my opinion, we are failing at the most basic levels. English literacy. A lot of our language is defined as parts of speech and not truly defined as what they mean. Creating functional illiteracy. Water the grass and it will grow. The word "and" in that sentence means as a result. When were you taught that? Conjunction is a part of speech, not a definition. Part of speech are not definitions.

Thanks for sharing a sample of your teaching, The Pizza Problem. That helped me understand how to implement this intervention in the classroom.
Omg. Am I at a stupid staff meeting? Bla bla bla from teachers who have no classroom management, no subject knowledge, and no ability to convey knowledge. They just “break everyone into groups”, then pass out some 29 year-old handouts, and let everyone cheat off the A kids. Then cover it all up at the staff meeting with a word-salad of education vocabulary words that are hip this week. A fig leaf for a terrible life choice.
