Street Photography at Night in London

Street Photography at night is an art form in of itself, there is obviously a lot less natural light, so finding unnatural lighting is key to get the images looking just right. I only use the ai noise reduction. That’s it.
I have to say I find this a rather depressing video. Like many things nowadays, it’s too watered down and reliant on someone or something else putting in the work. The fun of photography is getting out there and finding and learning things for yourself. Some of my favourite images I’ve found without planning. Instead putting in the work and walking around and stumbling on a fantastic bit of light or a compelling scene. Gaining knowledge of where the sun falls at a certain time of the day in a location can only be achieved by putting in the work yourself. Also learning from mistakes makes you better. Realising where you went wrong and correcting it. Discovering what aperture and shutter speed can do. Just getting told it by a non entity is not the answer. And don’t get me started on presets.
I agree with you, exploring your surroundings and taking a route off the beaten path as it were is a huge part of it, but sometimes having a little bit of a starting point is never a bad thing… same with learning, what ai like copilot do is scours the internet to find articles and merges stuff together to make it easier and summarised… if you’re a person that would go and look through countless articles to learn different bits then this is a much better time saving option, if you are not one of those people and you prefer to teach yourself, then you wouldn’t be doing this anyway
Make sure you have a business insurance policy, don't use homeowners as most homeowners insurance companies won't pay if you're a professional (sold or have any work for sale anywhere). I learned this the hard way when my D90 kit was stolen from my car in downtown Detroit.
I agree. I photo a lot of London street art. Much of it is well done. Good channel and I’ve subscribed 👍🏾
Thank you for subscribing, hope you enjoy the weekly content
Black and white is pretty much the only option to get decent photos in overcast London. It's fucking depressing. These conditions are decent for night photography, though. It gets dark super early and you can get nice pics when the floor is wet and reflect the lights.
I loved the black and white photos. I also do street photography and I'm passionate about black and white photos 😊
Im glad you liked them. I shoot a tonne of BNW photos on here
Those black, red, white silhouette shots are superb!!
Thank you. One of my favourites from the trip too
You can be very happy with how well your fireworks shots came out and especially the puddle Ferris wheel shot…excellent! 👏
Thank you very much Jim much appreciated
All prudent and good advice for civil, respectful street photography…thank you for sharing your thoughtful viewpoints 👍
a sad sign of the times compared to a mere ten or so yrs ago. how else do you get a photographic history of the life and times for future generations. i don't do a lot but i always ask first
Definitely important to capture the everyday but to be respectful while doing so imo. And unfortunately some people are best not photographed (unless asked like you say)
In and around Sloane Square, there are lot of characters around there. I was there the other week and wished I had my camera.
I always try to have my camera with me when walking around. You never know
How strange - my comment appears to have been deleted! Samosh?
Not me mate i saw it. Went to reply and it was gone
@@SnapsBySamosh glad to hear that - it certainly wasn't me. Nothing untoward said I didn't think. Strange.
Yeah ive checked and its not even being held for review so who knows, UA-cam being UA-cam
Increasingly, I think youtubers should start titling some of their videos: A Video I Had to Make to Keep My Channel Relevant to UA-cam's Algorithm. I am getting tired of UA-cam's tyranny; to many ads - some longer than the video we are trying to view, and most are outright lies.
I preferred your first comment before you deleted it as that one was a little less. Well yaknow, like this one… but ill reply in the same way: This video and videos made by other creators over the same topic are a very interesting topic of conversation… people have opinions and different morals and as specified in this video they are mine, others find that they are happy to photograph different things and that is their own opinion
And while I would not want the hassle of replacing my equipment and claiming on my insurance, none of my equipment or ANY picture I have ever taken is worth getting hurt or dying for.
Well said
Great review and I agree 100%, especially the flash photography, talk about asking for a fight? And how rude! I always ask if I can take a portrait unless they are not looking. If it's more of a distance or a group I don't typically ask or take it discreetly. Good reminders. Thanks.
I definitely think its a good talking point, all opinions for sure some people will choose to photograph different things that other’s wont and thats their prerogative
If the government can point cameras at everyone and anything on the streets you should be able to. Does that mean you should should morally? That’s up to you to decide?
Morals over legality for me
@@SnapsBySamoshagreed! But I want that right to decide.
Nice video and thanks for the tips, I'll be visiting 22 Bishopsgate. Would be good to know some of the tech details though, like focal length, sensor type (full frame) and apertures as these are important factors in street photography. By the way, I didn't even notice the music until I read those weird comments about it.
Thanks for watching :) , yeah i use the leica Q3 so focal length is 28mm Full frame, ill tend to shoot is the mid range apertures from 5.6/8 most of the time, depending on the lighting conditions though ill open up the aperture more But yeah in all my videos: 28mm focal length as the Q3 is fixed :)
Good luck trying to catch SUNLIGHT in London... It's overcast 300 days in a year. The city is great for street photography because there are millions of people, a huge variety of cultures and characters, great architecture and interesting places, but extremely hard to catch a moment where the sun is out.
Most of my work focuses on light, shape and shadow. Yes London isn’t sunny all year round but you can definitely get pockets of light on a day out… London experiences all 4 seasons in a single day most of the time
Another good one! I really liked those images at the end and the chance to think about them, rather than the usual doom scroll past 20 images in 12 seconds. #3 instantly had me thinking 'Did I miss the email about the date change?' 🤣
Thank you for this Video. Great Inspiration 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
First time finding your channel and great video. I particularly liked that you told us where the locations actually are, as most vlogs just show images but never let you know how to find them! You might even add What3Word refs or similar. Interested to see you also shoot a Q3 as I grabbed a Q2M earlier this year and have loved it for photo walks like this. Look forward to a dive into your channel and followed on IG.
What3Words is a great idea ill look to implement in the future for sure… Thanks for the kind words and I hope you continue to join the content
I really enjoyed your video with your wonderfully edited videography, music and mood. Your audio is so amazingly isolated on your voice even on the streets I'm curious how you get that without all the background ambient city noise around you. Thanks for the enjoyable escape to London at night and super photographs...you're right about your shot of the subject sitting on the backlit staircase is excellent 👍 Update...I just checked out your very nicely presented website and see your microphone gear is the Hollyland...so excellent given it's rather modest price!
Thank you for all the appreciation i cant take all the credit my partner is the one who edits the audio of the videos. That and our microphones have built in noise isolation and background reduction which helps (hollyland lark m2 microphones if you’re curious)
@@SnapsBySamosh I just checked out your very nicely presented website before realizing you'd already politely replied with your answer here 🤣Thank you...kudos to your partner for their contributions 👍
Great video review. Great shots! And great tour! Are you using Highlight Weighted Metering for these? I find it very useful. Thanks.
Thanks always happy to hear a video was worth making. And to answer your question yes i am.
One of your best videos.... Nighttime and neon glow are just MADE for photography!
Appreciate the kind words, love a good neon shot
Great shots , love Soho 😍
Thanks a lot :) yeah its great for night shooting
Awesome video and photos! London is a great city for street photography, isn't it? I just returned from there and cant wait to post my video too!
One of the best cities in my opinion, im very lucky to live here… hope you had a lovely time and got some great 📸
Also use your 5 senses , remember to look around you before using your camera or other equipment. There could be someone watching you. If you don’t feel safe in the area don’t take out your equipment. Recently I bought a Lecia SL3 camera and I have gotten a lot of attention. Mostly people are nice and complimentary, but still be careful.
my fav is street photography......
interesting the q3 over an m10 or m system seeing as though you already have a perfectly good fuji :) how do you feel the q3 has enhanced the work or quality of photos :)
The move to like was more of a shift to a new everyday camera for me rather than using it with the fuji for me anyway, and the Q was more of a entry step to the world of Leica. I have used the M system since and its lovely to use, but the autofocus has definitely got me out of a sticky situation… I dunno if enhanced the work is the right word but it definitely made me think more having a fixed lens system
Thank you for another first class video, I like your relaxed approach! I will be going to the British Museum soon!
Glad you enjoyed it! The British museum is great to visit and for shots too, enjoy it
Just like Allan Schaler's video...
Glad you liked it
How did the Q3 manage in the rain - no problems? Having watched the entire vifdeo now - not a lot of rain - slightly misleading title ;)
It handled it like a champ My clothes were wet all day so it still counts 🤣
@@SnapsBySamosh 😂 - good to know the Q3 was fine - I've only had mine in very light drizzle - so far
I lasted 7 minutes, then had to turn it off. I could have just turned the sound off, but you could have so easily chosen not to have it so loud to start with.....
Or I can continue with how I do things and not lose sleep if you cant watch (you’re the only one I’ve ever had complaining about background music)
Love your photographs, but that music is dreadful. Why do so many UA-camrs play really loud sh*t background music? It's your photography I'm interested in, not your music. Please stop it!
Yaknow you have the option to just….. turn the video down
@SnapsBySamosh ....then I miss what you're saying about your photographs. Serious question....why do you think playing loud backgroound music in the video is a good thing? Why does it have to be so loud? The music became the main feature. As I already said, your photography was my interest, not some hellish noise at too high a level for my ears to cope with.
Nice review and production. I just bought my first Leica, and Q3 as well and loving it. As for grips, I took Hudson Henry Photography recommendation on a grip and love the RRS L-grip. I highly recommend it.
Thanks a lot, and good choice!
Unless you are using a mobile phone and then it's very dangerous as you will have your phone stolen.
have a neck or wrist strap on your phone, and keep your wits about you
How did you get to 1000 subscribers so fast? Tips welcome
Honestly, like 90% luck and 10% consistency - the weekly schedule from the offset was helpful i think, the algorithm loves being consistent
@@SnapsBySamosh thanks man
I had to 6' thugs cross the street against the traffic light right at me last year. My hand went to the one hand opening knive in my pocket. The got right in my face and one snarled. that's a nice camera. I calmly clicked off the safety in my pocket- it's not my first rodeo- and their eyes got as big as saucers, they turned and ran away. Now the trigger safety on the gun in that pocket makes no sound. 12 round there and in that area, another 10 round mag in my waist band. THAT'S a thief's worst nightmare. What did Jesus say in Big Lewbowski, pull the treeger til it goes cleek.
As I Brit, I don’t get it
I just carry a second hand nikon d90 + kit lens 😅
still a capable bit of kit :P
Some good spot & shots - nice vlog
Thank you, i overestimated the in built microphone so hope the audio is better now
Yes all good @@SnapsBySamosh
Very helpful and enjoyed your images, thanks. Has promted me to get into London with my Q3, been a few weeks. Maybe see you there!
thanks a lot :) - I’m in London a bunch if you see me come and say hi 100% - it’s happened a few times, love chatting to you all
Bruce Gilden is one of my favorite photographers for his images, but his aggressive style is not something I would do. Jeff Ascough produces a lot of amazing images shooting from the hip. RAW files are meant to be processed, as a RAW file it is a series of binary numbers converted to an image. JPEGs out of the camera are processed within the camera with the photographer having no control apart from choosing a filter for the image. Give me RAW and Lightroom anytime
Street Photography pure and simple, I love this genre, always wandering about looking for the Golden Grail.......
Is it possible to have misconceptions about Street Photography - it is not exactly a defined trade or mode or endproduct.
Anything can have misconceptions if enough people don’t understand it
