Preservation of 1000 TsaTsa in Remote Rachen Nunnery, Tsum Nepal
A stellar example of successful community engagement began in a remote nunnery in high altitude Nepal when a team from a conservation non-profit, Treasure Caretaker Training (TCT), was invited to work on more than 1000 tsatsa (blessed clay tablets of Avalokiteshvara). The international team was warmly welcomed into the life of the nunnery for a month, and worked together in their historic meditation hall.
This lively presentation is hosted by Princeton Preservation Group, and Rachen Nunnery was a favourite retreat for Lama Zopa Rinpoche. @FPMT

Traditional Sacred Buddhist Texts and the Art that Makes them Accessible

Traditional Buddhist texts, such as those studied and practiced in the monasteries, were for the most part beyond the reach of the many and diverse people of Himalayan Buddhism, few of whom knew how to read. Moreover, scholars who lived far from the centers of education, often at great remove along the Silk Road and elsewhere, had little access to the profound texts that were held by distant mo...

*_E.Ma_**_!_* I drove a member of HE's entourage to Gampo from Sydney for his ?1991? visit. Such vivid memories of his talk in the upper areas of Sopa Choling! (Detail: since the ceilings were not yet fully constructed, the incense actually rose up against the roof from the inside!) *_Karmapa Khyenno_* _--KC:_
Thank you Ann for all your wonderful work preserving sacred Buddhist texts and art....this work is invaluable as I saw first hand how thangkas and texts were being left unattended in remote small monasteries in the Himalayas in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Many precious and irreplaceable historical items were lost, and others sold to private buyers with no spiritual interest in the items. I very much enjoyed this video and recommend it to all!
Really amazing video, thank you 🙏
What a wonderful video. It is so wonderful that Treasure Caretaker Training could offer this program. I look forward to more in the series.
I hope so too! We are grateful to our team of monastic and secular scholars, conservators, scientists, community and monastery treasure caretakers, our editors, video editors and web designer. We are grateful to our donors for supporting this work!
Fascinating!
I really enjoyed it ma'am. Will wait for more.
Shame that the huge scroll thangkas are rolled up and stored wet in their leather sleeves for a whole year! Don't they get musty and disintegrate much faster that way? I wonder if you, as a thangka preservation expert, could influence them to take the thangkas back out and dry them completely before keeping them stored for a whole year?
Thank you so much for your comment, Stone W. Can we discuss this further via email? Treasurecaretaker at iCloud.com Thank you and talk soon!
Fascinating! Learned so much about thangkas! Thank you so much for all your efforts to preserve them and educate everyone on how to do that and their meanings as well. Makes me want to study art conservation... :)
What an incredibly informative interview - helps me understand so much more of all that is being discussed and expressed in the media around the world. Thank you.
