    Why is Princess Bride in your title? Clickbait?

    • @ByMatthewPorter
      @ByMatthewPorter 2 місяці тому

      Not intended as click bait. I really see this movie THE FALL as exploring some of the same ideas, and the same structure, as THE PRINCESS BRIDE. An adult telling a story to a child, and most of the movie playing out as the interaction of the adult’s story and the child’s imagination. THE FALL takes that and combines it with a darker “real world” story, including a look at the motivations of the storyteller. Hope you don’t feel deceived by the video title. I do think that anyone who likes THE PRINCESS BRIDE will find a lot to consider in THE FALL. Thanks for watching.

    I love Tim Burton, he is one of my favorite filmmakers. However BeatleJuice (the original) is one of my lesser favorites amongst his filmography. So I wasn’t terribly enthusiastic about the prospect of a sequel. I thought if Burton had to make a sequel, I would’ve rather seen an Edward Scissorhands film. The idea of old man Edward sounds kinda awesome to me! But I digress. Like you, I didn’t enjoy the character of BeatleJuice in the original film. He’s gross. He tried to marry a teenager, and was always doing creepy things like trying to look under women’s skirts. I don’t really find sexual harassment funny and I find it disturbing that so many fans love his character… However, this new film got rid of all that creepy stuff. BeatleJuice still has a toxic relationship and unhealthy Obsession with Lydia but it was contrasted against her toxic relationship with her fiancé. This time I enjoyed BeatleJuice as a villain and foil because he wasn’t portrayed as creepy pervert anymore. He felt more like his counterpart from the animated series. In that show, BeatleJuice and Lydia are “best friends” but it’s still shown as toxic unhealthy relationship without the creepy child marriage aspect. I really wish this sequel had outright referenced the Animated show. Even though it didn’t, it did have a similar feel and vibe with how the afterlife was depicted. Which makes sense because Burton worked on the Animated Series. I think Tim Burton has definitely matured as a filmmaker and I liked this new movie so much more than the original. This sequel and the Animated Series are both pretty awesome. I could do without the original aside from a few scenes.

      Thanks for watching, and for your thoughtful comments! My reasons for disliking the character in the original movie are very similar to yours. ("Nope. Not finding any of that entertaining, Mr. Burton.") I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of Tim Burton, but I do tend to have strong reactions to his movies, either positive (ED WOOD, SLEEPY HOLLOW) or negative (BATMAN, PLANET OF THE APES). The two Beetlejuice movies were an unusual mix: positive on some points, negative on others. I've never seen any of the animated series, but you've made curious.

    The book was very good. The movie is very unique, just as you said. It's not an action movie but a slow drama. The story is mostly about the three talking and sharing anecdotes and thoughts that are quite interesting. It can be slow for some but I think it's rewarding to watch it once. The Russian word "stalker" approximately means "scavenger".

    • @ByMatthewPorter
      @ByMatthewPorter 3 місяці тому

      Indeed, definitely worth watching. So much is said about wanting “faithful” adaptations of novels into movies, but sometimes it’s more interesting to get a very different experience. As different as the film and novel were, they both captured something similar at the core of the character of "Red" Schuhart / the Stalker.

    I first saw Stalker when I was in art college ca. 1986. I've seen it many times since. Tarkovsky and many other cast members likely all died later from their exposure to toxins in the industrial Soviet filming locations. Also, they basically had to film it twice since all their initial film stock turned out to be corrupted when it was processed. Tragic all around.

    • @ByMatthewPorter
      @ByMatthewPorter 3 місяці тому

      Wow. That’s a remarkable story behind this movie. I’d heard about having to re-shoot practically the entire movie due to film stock and lab issues, but I wasn’t aware of the consequences of toxic exposure from the locations. Amazing that this film got made, and quite a sobering price. Thanks for the info, and thanks for watching.

    I take partial issue with your statement beginning around the 4 minute mark. People most certainly take issue with nepotism (and it's offshoot of legacy admissions in higher education) in many fields, particularly fields which are highly competitive, highly compensated, and have certain limitations to the sheer availability of positions. Many jobs in finance, legal, and the medical professions are filled with the scions of those already successful in those areas, and the notion of meritocracy often goes out the window when it comes to many of these positions. Not all, not even most, but a significant enough number that leads to a cycle that's very hard to break, particularly amongst those people who DO possess the talent and ability and intelligence, but won't have the opportunity to get a first, second, let alone third look when it comes to their potential. The reason why nepotism in other fields isn't spoken about is that those fields tend to have rather low socioeconomic stakes when it comes to the greater economy, up until you're talking about the very pinnacle of those fields. It's reasonable that no one would bat an eye at a son following his father in becoming a police officer. People would, and justly, would raise a stink if a son follows his father, who is the Chief of Police or superintendent, in becoming a police officer and then rises up the ranks partly or wholly due to that familial connection. Lastly, I disagree with the notion that merely acknowledging that someone is the beneficiary of nepotism, however great or small, is tantamount to discrediting them or their successes. You (and the beneficiaries) can acknowledge the leg up AND also respect they are/were possessed of great talent and ability that has allowed them to reach and maintain success in many ways irrespective of their familial lineage. To say or imply that nepobaby as an appellation is inherently discrediting and unwarranted in all cases strikes me as being infantilizing to the very people who are willing and capable of saying, "Hey, I had these advantages, and I acknowledge them, which is why I worked very hard to make my own way and become as successful as possible so as not to waste those very same advantages". No one who is being intellectually serious is using the term nepobaby as a criticism of those who truly excelled (and likely would've regardless of their familial lineage). Instead, it's those who get the leg up, the doors opened, and do the absolute bare minimum while still receiving plaudits and opportunities solely because of the familial lineage (and often the machinations of said lineage).

    • @ByMatthewPorter
      @ByMatthewPorter 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for your very thoughtful comment. You raise important points, and I appreciate the opportunity to clarify. Structural nepotism is indeed very real problem. As you describe, it is a problem particularly in education and in competitive fields, mainly because it limits opportunities for those outside that system, whose potential may never be realized, even if their abilities are superior to those who are able to get a start in a career through family history, connections, and wealth. It's important to recognize these structures and to work towards breaking them down. And as part of that, it is of course necessary to acknowledge those who benefit from that structure, while separately assessing whether their success is aligned with any actual ability and accomplishment. That said, my comments in the video were not about the real issues around the realities of nepotism, but rather around the flippant use of the term "nepo baby" as an epithet. I don't think I've often, maybe not ever, heard the actual term used as part of a serious discussion of **nepotism**. Instead, it seems to be used as an attack on the individual and their work. I do indeed hear it used as a way to express the assumption, sight unseen, that the person's work will be inferior. That the person **could not** have accomplished anything in the field were it not for their family connections. For some, the term seems to reflect the idea that it is inherently illegitimate, or at least suspect, for a person to follow in a parent's footsteps. And that's simply unreasonable, as it runs contrary to the ways humans learn, and the ways our personalities develop. There is a lot of important work to be done to expand opportunities and help as many people as possible reach their potential. But I don't think labeling some people as "nepo babies" and then disregarding their work, as if that really addresses the issue, helps anyone. So thanks again for your comments. I suspect we agree on this topic more than we disagree. Regardless, I appreciate the time spent watching the video and offering your response.

  • @KT-fy6bl
    @KT-fy6bl 6 місяців тому

    You make an amazing argument about the term nepobaby and how it’s used to put down people who are using the advantage they have in life to do something. Is it always fair, no, but neither is the world and putting someone down just because they have that advantage is detrimental to the potential they may have.

    • @loadishstone
      @loadishstone 6 місяців тому

      Boohoo. The reason people hate nepotism is precisely BECAUSE it is detrimental to talent. It puts rich children ahead of actual talent. Sometimes these coincide but that’s rare. Good art is already rare. Also saying the world is unfair is idiotic. We are the world. We all actively make the world what it is. What you and the video maker don’t seem to understand about nepotism is it actively pushes out talent in spaces where there are limited resources. It’s ridiculous to compare the often forced and cruel social system of class based work and the nepotism of the modern entertainment industry, and talk about how this is “how we have always done it.” Absolutely ludicrous.

      Are you thinking of THE TWINS EFFECT (also known as The Vampire Effect)? I have not seen it, but I understand that Jackie Chan appears in a cameo.

    Any other movies (especially 60s, 70s, 80s) that really need the big screen treatment? If necessary we can hold out for a re-release, or lobby the Alamo Drafthouse for a special event. Seeing ALIEN in a theater again was a real treat.

    I like the english dub of the tv show, though watch mostly in japanese first. The film I saw in german dub, and it was also great. So I can't imagine that english dub of the film will somehow be bad

      Thanks! Glad to hear the English dub of the series is good. I agree, it makes sense that the dub of the movie would be the same, or better.

    Sometimes our desire to be satisfied (pleased, like/be pleasured by) is trumped by our need to be stimulated (challenged by?) what we're taking in. I'm sure that (like many of us) you're aware of always walking on that fence... raw "feels" on one side ...and our need for meditative/spiritual, analytical/intellectual growth on the other. (Don't look to "get it" based on your background, if you've enough empathy to feel.) Looking forward to watching more of your reviews, so... carry on! 😁👍🏾

    Awesome review, and I'm rrrrrreally looking forward to watching this... 😉 ...the kind of escapist fantasy we don't get to see any more.👍🏾

      That’s a great description: pure escapist fantasy adventure. Just what we need sometimes! I think you’ll like it. Thanks for watching!
