Red Hat EX188 Practice Session: Implement images using Podman Part 3
Practice session and self-assessment about ENTRYPOINT and CMD instructions with containers.
0:00 Introduction and commentary
1:03 CMD vs ENTRYPOINT
8:22 ENTRYPOINT and parameters
16:45 Experiment
17:50 Conclusion
*Notes*
Remember this is my practice session, not a tutorial or official training materials. There are a few seconds of choppy audio. I suspect the issue is with OBS and my audio interface. At some point, I'll take the time to troubleshoot. Right now all time is focused on exam preparation.

    Hey, great video but I am lost. I purchased a used server With Windows Severe Datacenter 2016 but am changing cpu's and will have 20 cores once CPUs arrive. Does that mean I have to buy 20 Windows Server 2016 Datacenter licenses? Or what do I purchase and how do I enter what i buy into server to make sure all cores are licensed? Please and thanks

    Great tutorial. Just an observation if you're on a homelab. You'd ideally want your connected clients to get their IPs from the servers router (as if you're connecting from the homelab network). If you connect from different networks out in the world it would become an absolute career maintaining and adding different allowed client IPs.

    How do CALs relate to VMs? For example, a Server 2022 Host server might need 1 or 2 admin users, and then if that machine hosts 3x VM servers, and each of those had two Windows users. Would the host need CALs to cover all the users across the VMs, or is there a per VM license?

      I'm learning myself, but from my best understanding the difference between 2> and 2>> is this. So 2>, you're taking standard error and you're just OVERwriting a file. VS 2>> where you're taking standard error and ADDING to a file (appending it).

    Is it possible to see the XML code for one of the test networks? Not sure why when I make a network like that - it has a mac address in the XML. I can't figure why there would be a mac address there - that should be seen only in the VM details, seems to me.

    Thank you Eddie for the explanation. What if I am running Nutanix which is an HCI platform. It consists of three hosts in one cluster. I have 2 processors per server and 8 core per processor. So in total i have 6 processors and 48 cores. If i want to run 15 windows servers on this cluster, my understanding is that I would need to buy licenses for 48 cores and then buy datacenter instead of standard to run unlimited VM’s is this correct?

    • @EddieJennings
      @EddieJennings 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching. I (unfortunately) haven't been in an environment that uses HCI. My initial thought is each individual host is considered for Windows Server licensing (just like a traditional environment where separate hypervisor boxes are in a cluster). Thus, you'd need 48 cores of Data Center licensing, since each of you three servers happens to match the minimum of 16 cores per server. So assuming my understanding is still correct, you are right. I'm unsure what the sweet spot is now for when the math makes sense to move from Standard to Data Center when just considering the number of VMs, but that would be easy to calculate from some quotes from your reseller. I seem to remember it was in the teens years ago. I'd recommending digging into this, www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/product-licensing/windows-server, and comparing what you find with what you reseller tells you about licensing and being in an HCI environment. The more I dig into the RHEL, Ubuntu, and $insert_distro_here world, the less time I've had to keep up with Windows server licensing.

  • @RobbieRobski
    @RobbieRobski 5 місяців тому

    Forgive my ignorance. But it feels like a double dip to sell RDS cals ontop of the normal windows server cals.

    • @EddieJennings
      @EddieJennings 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching. It does feel that way, doesn't it? I've been detached from having to dig into Microsoft licensing for a little bit now, since I'm mostly working with Linux environments, but I'm fairly sure the product + CAL model is still alive and well in the Microsoft world. I think Microsoft sees RDS services (not the couple of RDP connections you can make for system administration, but actually setting up connection broker and all of that) as a product on top of Windows server; thus, why licensing it requires its unique CAL in addition to the Windows Server CAL you would've already purchased just to interact with a Windows server.

    Hi Eddie! Say thank you, your videos are really very useful for attempting EX 188 exam. How can I get the Openshift environment or can I use my own built Linux VM for this practice? Thanks Nehas

    • @EddieJennings
      @EddieJennings 5 місяців тому

      Thank you for watching! Remember, my practice session are just that, practice sessions. They're not authoritative, but I try to have the info right ;) I would look into a Red Hat Developer Subscription. I can't remember off the top of my head if it includes Openshift, but I *think*, even if it doesn't Red Hat offers a trial that you could use for your practice. I would think for EX188 you shouldn't need experience with Openshift to prepare, since there's nothing about Openshift in the objectives. My formal training for the exam came from a Red Hat Learning Subscription, which includes practice labs and such. For my final prep, I worked through the objectives on my own RHEL VMs using Podman. So I would suspect practicing Podman things on your own RHEL VMs would be fine. Again, look into the Red Hat Developer Subscription, because at the very least, you are entitled to 16 RHEL instances, so you can practice in the same environment on which you'll be tested.

    • @EddieJennings

      From a technical perspective, yes. You'd need to have something you can boot into (such as an install ISO flashed onto a USB drive), then delete / reformat whatever file system exists on your server and install a new OS. Depending on the OS you choose to install, you may need to pay for licensing.

It sort of makes sense, but this is my understanding of it. ▪︎ You buy a Windows server license for the server itself, and then ▪︎you have to buy a user CAL for each user that would access that server from within a LAN. ▪︎ then each device that accesses that server, such as a user PC or a tablet, laptop, etc, would need a device CAL. ▪︎ if a Remote Desktop user accesses that server, he needs an RDS CAL + a device CAL that he uses for his session. ...am I correct in my understanding? It seems the licensing purchase requirements of Microsoft seem wholly unfair. It's like you buying a car, and then you have to buy a user license for each user who would ride in that car. So why did I pay to purchase that car in the first place if I have to pay more just drive that car myself and for each person I would carry in that car?

      I'm fairly detached from Microsoft licensing since I mainly work in the Linux world now, but I don't think the CAL stuff has changed much. That being said your understanding is close. - You buy a Windows server license, whose licensing model is Server + CAL. - You need a CAL (client access license) to cover anything accessing / using that Windows server (not just things accessing the server from a LAN). There are generally two ways of handling this. You can use User CALs (most common, I think), which for you user grants them rights to access any of your Windows Servers of the appropriate version, regardless of the number of devices they use. You can use Device CALs, which for you device that accessing your Windows servers, grants unlimited users of that device rights to access your Windows servers of the appropriate version. Unless you're managing an environment with something like kiosks which have many users using a single device (think day shift, then night shift), it's usually easier to use User Cals. Since you have the less administrative overhead or just knowing you need one CAL per user, and that covers the users to access all of your Windows servers from all of their devices. - Extension: Let's say you buy licenses to cover two Windows Servers. You do not have to buy two CALs for everyone. The one user CAL grants that user rights to access all of your Windows servers. - RDS is a different beast. You can have make up to two (I think) RDP connections to a Windows server for administration tasks and such. That doesn't require CALs beyond Windows Server CALs. But if you actually deploy the RDS feature and with it setup all of the pieces (connection broker, etc.), then any users using that RDS service will need the appropriate RDS CAL, in addition to the Server CAL they have granting rights to just Windows server. Perhaps someone more familiar with current licensing can chime in and correct any mistakes I made above. If I were having to deal with Microsoft licensing more often, I'd be talking to my reseller + reading Microsoft's own documentation about it to figure out what the actual deal is. "So why did I pay to purchase that car in the first place if I have to pay more just drive that car myself and for each person I would carry in that car?" If it makes you feel any better, once each person has their car CAL, they can ride in as many cars as you buy without having to purhcase additional car CALs. :)
