With all these megapixels, there is nothing wrong with cropping. It allows you to perfect the shot in post.
I can't comprehend not cropping unless you shoot only a certain type of photo in a controlled studio with a known lens.
Very informative Dr. Scott!!
I traded a 7 element Takumar 50mm 1.4 for it, and I do not regret it one bit, the Auto Rikenon 55mm 1.4 is far superior in my opinion in every category except flare resistance, it doesnt handle it well at all. Bokeh and colors are insane on the Rikenon, even better than the 55mm 1.4 Mamiya Sekor. The only drawback is that when pointing the rear element near my BT soundbar, the bluetooth audio starts going absolutely crazy, distorted audio. I know thats definetely the radioactivity doing something.
This lens is becoming popular with filmmakers due to its “character” and still affordable price. Many younger photographers are attracted to analog/film cameras and the Canon FD lenses have become popular with them. I started using Canon FD lenses in 1975 and eventually acquired the 55mm f1.2 SSC. I prefer the 50mm f1.4 SSC lens for most subjects. You really need to have your manual focusing skills at a high level if you are going to use a 1.2 lens wide open. I prefer to use this lens with a Canon EF which is a large all metal camera with a very sensitive light meter.
Estou vendendo uma caso tenham interesse
I have the later red MC f2.4 version and it is amazing. Super easy to focus on a camera with colour peaking and focus zoom (Sony). Picture quality seems to be up there with more modern Zeiss lenses, at least my 16-35 MkI. I use mine with a screw-in wide angle hood. Entertaining as always!
Hi Tony...they really are a gem! We seem to be so focused on modern glass that many of these get overlooked...which is better for the pocketbook for those in the market to buy one! Thanks and have a super weekend! Cheers, Scott
Great info, I got this same lens in a bag of lenses I bought for £20, I've sold a few but decided to keep this one to use on my Lumix G3 m4/3. The aperture is sticking like yours, I'll try your fix. I've added your channel, always good to connect with other photography creators.
It's a great lens! Have fun trying to get it back to useable form! It's kinda fun really! Thanks for the contribution and the subscription! Cheers, Dr. Scott
I've recently had the luxury of a Mamiya-Sekor 58mm/1.8 (Tomioka Silver) on my 5D3 Scott... ... Never leaving my premises this one.
Hi Pete! I have a 55/1.4 and like it a lot. I could easily imagine its bigger brother being just as lovely. I tend to like 58s more than the 50s...and 1.8 is plenty fast enough! Good to hear that you are enjoying things! Have a super weekend! Cheers from me and Dylan!
Just love those vintage Leica lenses. Have a 50mm Summicron Rigid, v2, on a MD262. The MD shoots "like a" film camera and with the Rigid renders like one...!
I too feel the same way...as much as I would use an M11 with a 50-APO if I were gifted them, I am not likely to be purchasing anytime soon. My M9 and M10 both provide a super experience with super results. I tend to use my vintage Leitz-Leica lenses more than my more current ones because of the character they provide. Besides, some of these modern 50mm iterations are hovering around 8K USD! Yikes...and not today! Thanks for the contribution to the topic! Cheers!
@@DrScottMcDonald007 Yes, 18-24 MP is more than enough for computer viewing. Anything over that is for heavy cropping...!

Yes nice lens but I'd have to sell a few of my favourites at minute to afford it... I'm glad Dylan's legs have grown longer than his daiper/nappy but he is going to get you back in years to come over this vid.. Happydays.. : )
Hi Pete...yes, I agree. It is not the most economical option...but still cheaper when you can find a good deal on the used market. Dylan is certainly growing faster by the day. His participation in these videos is becoming more of a challenge to get him to break away from whatever he is doing to spend time with me infront of the video camera. I will use these cameo appearances in the future as a tool to gain his cooperation like doing housework or I will show his friends how he behaved as a toddler! Oh well, each day is a new adventure. I hope all is well with you at home. All the best Pete and have a super weekend! Cheers, Scott and Dylan
I wanted to know about the but after endless messing around I lost the will to live and gave up before you even got to the point. Sorry
Hahaha! Yes...you are with the majority of UA-cam viewers that seek out a focused photography video. You won't find that on this channel. I'll talk about things but in a more roundabout method. I cater to a very specific audience who likes the twisted approach I take. No apologies from either side of the aisle. Thanks for your input nonetheless! Cheers and have a super day!

I hope that you gained something from this Antonio. Thanks for watching! Have a super weekend! Cheers, Scott
How about this Dr... (Just thought I'd message before sleep)... Just acquired a Canon TS35mm/2.8 AND an EdMika adapter for my 5D3.. Both in one week from two thousand miles apart.. (Good planning on my part).. Haven't had chance to use properly yet but will do... How about an item on tilt/shift and perspective control etc?? I'm sure it'd be watched (And I'm sure you've heard of Ed from your home country...). Talk soon.. All love and respect from UK to You, Dylan and your better half... Pete
Hi Pete! Been off on vacation traveling around Vietnam with my wife and Dylan...back to the beach this afternoon. Sounds like you have some fun times lined up to check out your new toys if you haven't already by now! I will revisit the tilt-shift adapter (M42 mount so I can adapt many different lenses) that I have since an actual tilt-shift lens is too expensive and would not be used all that much (by me). I made one a year or two ago but I have begun recycling the videos for updates and new persectives. Well, speaking of Dylan, he has a doctor appoint for a checkup on a pesky cough he's had for a couple of days...then off to the beach! Chat with you again soon. Take care and keep having a good time! Cheers!!!
I think Distagin 35mm f1.4 for Leica is smaller...
Hey there Double S! The 35 Summilux is WAYYY smaller. I have one attached to my M10 right now as a matter of fact. This CZ model is a sweet lens mounted on my A7R3 though and balances well while shooting with it. Super construction and a pleasure to use. If you ever get the chance ot play around with one, you'd be happy with the results. Thanks for the input! Have a super July 4th!
Excellent video Dr. Scott! Dylan is just like my 2 year old, in to police cars, fire engines, and excavators.
Thanks 2Bs! Sounds like they'd play well together! Except Dylan hasn't quite learned the art of sharing yet. As soon as your son grabs one of Dylan's cars, it would be snatched back just as quickly or he'd look at me and protest! Hahaha! But if your son brought one of his cars to show Dylan, he would assume that this "new" car is now his possession. He's a work-in-progress! Cheers!
@@DrScottMcDonald007haha, yes! We are teaching Andrew to take turns!! Sharing toys is important!
Whoa Whoa. Next you are going to start talking about the back door.
Hahaha! I was a huge Doors fan many years ago..."I am a back door man!" As my outtro says, "We talk about anything photography...or we'll wing it!" Hope all is well with you back home, speaking of back. Reading the news, it just gets crazier by the day.😆
@@DrScottMcDonald007 I remain with the living, and I remain employed. That's about all the good I can say. My kids have been sick. Costs are soaring. Housing and cars are unaffordable, and food isn't exactly cheap, but still attainable. For now. Yes, the country has gone looney tunes and depending on which side you sit on it has shattered trusted in the judicial system. How are things on your end?
@@sebastiang7183 ...the more I speak with friends back home, the more I feel better about living here, as odd as that may seem comparing the two locations. The scene here is very vibrant and my university keeps growing and attracting more students (good for employment). We're at 123 in the QS Rankings so that is amazing! The culture, as you know, is quite conservative with sprinkles of innovation thrown into the mix. The people are well-behaved, for the most part, thus making it a very peaceful society. I am sorry to hear about your kids. I've read a lot of that in the news. Fortunately, that has not been the case here. The last health crisis here was C-19 and that has long subsided...no Measles, Monkey Pox, Bird or Swine flu, SARS, or any of the others I read about over the last couple of years. We are lucky I guess. As far as the other American issues are concerned, I just wish we could have a left/right political do-over and wipe the slate clean and begin with a fresh group of candidates. But we're stuck with what we've got and it is not healthy for the nation. I don't see it getting better anytime soon. Sad really.
@@DrScottMcDonald007 Those topics can get nasty and youtube likes to censor. On another topic, I have been using the Topcor 58 1.8 on the GFX and I am thrilled. I thought the lens had some SA and softness at f/1.8 that significantly improved at the f/2 stop. This is not wrong, but the lens seems optimized for close focusing where I can get pretty crisp results even wide open. I have found the lens has some curvature and if I focus on the eyebrows at such wide apertures the results are much better of what is in focus than if I focus on the eyes as commonly suggested. The vignetting also is much less at close focus than infinity, which works perfectly for my intended use of the lens.
@@sebastiang7183 ...it's great to know that you found a favorite! An economical one at that! Medium Format is awaiting my curiosity to take the plunge..someday...perhaps. Best of luck with yours Sebastian! Hope your kids feel better soon! Cheers, Scott
Way too much talking and the out takes are stupid.
I agree...I'll do 20 pushups. Thanks for dropping by! Wish you all the best with your own channel.
I have a Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 Art lens, and it takes great pictures. All metal construction too. This 50mm 1.2 looks like another great lens from Sigma!
So funny because my two year old is fascinated by excavators, bulldozers, and dump trucks too!
I am impressed with this lens so far. I am taking ot the beach with me this weekend to see how it performs in those conditions.
@@Twobarpsi ...Dylan is also finding the police an interesting topic. Becoming a cop could come in handy for Daddy some day!
Isn't it illegal? Coming from US which stole and copied the entire german military industry and not only military technologies... Legal? Is theft legal in USA? Yes, since the german gold is still in US jail.
What a crazy lens! At 0.95 the pictures are other worldly. 1.4 it looks very smooth bokeh and sharper. Fantastic review!
It's a fun lens...certianly not an everyday user but it brings a smile to most people when playing around with it! Cheers!
Dr. Scott and Dylan-Boy
Some of my best pictures were taken with this lens. Best setting is 5.6
Agreed...some of my favorites were taken with this.
Excellent explanation!
I'm a huge Canon supporter, but the Zeiss wins here.
Yes...both a sweet but the more recent one is better!
thanks for spreading the word about Topcon! I have two Auto-Topcor 58mm f1.8 on a Topcon R. I can’t find much about the R or the lens online. So it good to see someone talking about this former SLR leader.
These are my second favorite lens line up!
Good advice!
I can't get this lens to hit focus below 5.6... Canon 5D MKII here.
It's not the greatest lens around but it does a "good enough" job for what you pay for it.
How “clicky” is the aperture ring?
Quite...if you don't like it for video work, you can always remove the little ball-bearing that produces that click.
@@DrScottMcDonald007 I have it declicked but it turns much too light now, no resistance at all so not usable.
@@TuinleiBob ...bummer! It doesn't do you much good if it adjusts itslef just through movement or gravity! Can you install the little bearing again to fix it?
Been saving up for this one on my ZF. $150 more and I’m getting this sweet lens.
You'll be happy that you did!
Dr Scott, I have used the Topcor 58 f/1.8 some more on my GFX and I am thrilled with the results. This 1960s lens has no business performing as well as it does especially at the wider apertures.
Hi Sebastian! Hope all is well with you and your family. I certainly do agree. Although the 1.4 gets all the love, this 1.8 is actually a better performing lens. It's also great to hear that it performs well paired with such a sensor!
@@DrScottMcDonald007 UA-cam is azz hoe. They deleted my comment with a link to a sample image.
WTF What's that little boy doing there?
Which part Vlad?
Quite exhausting clip. Funny? Not really.
You are correct on both counts Mike. Social experiments are more than a hobby for me. A thousand other tired weirdos seem to like them though. Thanks for playing along any way and taking the time to leave a comment. Have a super day out there! Cheers!
I picked one up recently in a lot of 5 lenses from Goodwill, $36 for all of them (including a Super Takumar 50mm 1.4). It was dirty but I disassembled and did a CLA (well, no adjustment needed). It turned out to be in nearly perfect condition other than the rubber focus grip ring, which was not salvageable, cracked and sticky. I replaced with some brown leather. It is my favorite lens for sure! Focus throw isn't even really an issue most of the time, 3ft to infinity is a single wrist/finger movement - it's only closer than 3ft where the throw becomes excessive.
Wow Mike! That's an excellent score! With the prices that these lenses go for these days, that's a great savings! Although it's nice to have original parts on our vintage lenses, sometimes they do fall apart and need something else to replace them. The leather grip would be not only a decent option but one that makes your lens unique and quite personal. I too have some that needed a grip replacement...I had not thought of leather before but will consider it in the future! Thanks for this comment Mike! Best of luck with these, Scott
- It takes forever before you start and all these videoclips, why? 😑
Sorry to disappoint you Liz. It's me...I like it and I do these as a form of entertaining myself without any regard for pleasing anyone else. It's not for everyone, I know that but a thousand other people so far like it and that's good enough for me. You could always skip the beginning if you don't like that part yourself. Anyhow, thanks for dropping by. Have a super rest of your weekend. Cheers, Scott
Best way is to go to California where you can break into a Leica store without getting arrested.
Hahaha! No doubt....kinda wish I was at the right place at the right time sometimes! The world makes less sense on almost a daily basis. Cheers and have a super weekend Sebastian!
Dr. Scott. I looked and it seems like prices of the 1.8 have shot up. Is this also true in your area?
The only ones on the local market at the moment are the UV part of the Topcor family which are not as valuable. You could pick up a 50mm f2 UV for under $50...some for even $10 I see! Cheers, Scott
@@DrScottMcDonald007 I don't see the point in buying the UV lenses. I have two 58 1.8 Topcors because I got them for such cheap prices, I couldn't pass them up. I was just surprised how much they are asking for them these days.
@@sebastiang7183 ...I'm with you there. I avoid all brands' lower end models unless there is a specific purpose for them. The RE Topcors rule the roost probably showing why there are none for sale locally at the moment but plenty of UV models as these people want to offload them to buy better lenses, I'm sure. The quality vintage lenses are not only great to supplement any collection but they turn out to be a decent investment as well.
@@DrScottMcDonald007 These days I favor the 58 1.8 as I adapt it to the GFX and it covers pretty well. I was going to pick up another cheap one, but looks like those days are over. I sometimes think about trying a Summicron-R 50 on the GFX, but I have resisted so far as I have a Summilux-R 50 that I like. Although that one has obvious vignetting. However, it's a fantastic night lens because of how sharp it is at f/1.4. Only 1.4 50 that doesn't vignette hard is the Minolta 58 1.4. However, most F2 and 1.7/1.8 50s seem to cover well. Topcor 58 1.8 is sharp corner to corner on the GFX at F8 though so that gives it an edge.
@@sebastiang7183 ...hi Sebastian. I too like my 1.8 as it is smaller and a tad bit sharper than the 1.4...just not as "cool" looking mounted on my Sony. The R lenses are quite nice and not all that talked about by those seeking vintage lenses, keeping the prices a little more down to Earth. Speaking of prices...any of the ones you've mentioned should save you a few bucks compared to good GFX lenses at around $2K. I'm hooked on the vintage look anyhow. I have 3 Sony-Zeiss lenses and hardly ever use them. I still want to keep them for a change of pace once in a while but my vintage collection gets much more of a workout.
Unfortunately I'd have to get my lotto numbers up before investing in any 1.2's.. Even then I have a nightmare with focus with my eyesight... Believe it or not my old 55/1.7 Chinon is a great portrait lens and of course my Canon converted 58/1.8 RE Topcor... Yes it'd be nice to have one for a shoot but I'd only get pi**ed off missing focus all the time so am going to stick with what I have for now.. Keep smiling.. : )
Hi Pete....I agree with your Chinon comment. Mine is also a great portrait lens! The secret to getting these lenses a little cheaper than the lens market is to buy an old film camera with one attached. Thanks for chiming in and have yourself a super weekend! Dylan says hi!
Helloo, i want to buy this lens for film making... i have nokton series f0.95. Do you think they ll match?
The 0.95 will be a completely different look as well as a much more challenging lens to work with due to the DoF it provides wide open. The 1.8 may not be a sexy when it comes to apertures but it does a great job for what it is!
Wrong- removed the 3 grub set screws First, unscrew the collar. Then remove the spanner ring.
Yup...learn something new everyday! Thanks for the input, it helps for "next time"..!!! Cheers!
58/1.4 Topcor is well covered on the internet, BUT the 50/1.4 GN is not, and it's much harder to do the zoom slider focus GN design!
Your video was inspired to me. Hope to see talking about another MOG legendary len like Lydith
Thanks for the kudos! I do not have the actual MOG Lydith...wish I did, but I do have the rebranded model as Pentacon (when the MOG label was no longer used) 30mm 3.5...a nice lens! I will be remaking that video sometime in the near future. Thanks for your input Khanh! Have a super week! Cheers, Dr. Scott
I have the Canon fd ssc 55 1.2 aspherical it was bought at a flea market for $20 back when digital cameras were beginning and film as going out of style.
I wish I got mine for only $20! Geez, what a deal! Cheers, Scott
Don't need Leica. Save the money for more urgent things in life. Leicas are not for everyone either. They are fully manual range finders which takes some getting used to even for seasoned pros. I see these kids who have spent a fortune buying a Leica M and a F1.4 Apo lens, and then complain that results are not sharp. I leave you to ponder on that.
Good sound advice LensMan! Forget about the Leica bodies and go for the lenses! They are going to outlive the camera anyhow and you can adapt them to just about any camera you already own. On another note, buying a Lecia or any camera for that matter, does not guarantee good results...you still have to understand how to use it properly. Thanks for sharing your advice! Cheers, Scott
Buy a FED.
Too true! You could even find one with a counterfeit Leitz branding on it to offer that "feeling" of owning a Leica! Hahaha! Thanks for the suggestion Tony! Cheers!
