While I got to start with gen 1 and that was my "Idk what is happening but i bet its important" stage of gaming as a little one, Gen 3 was my generation that I got to hear rumors and speculation from weird screenshots in bootleg magazines my mom would get me. Good times!

I did the same with Gen 5! Though I actually pirated B2W2 early. I was just so excited for the PWT feature that I couldn't wait. I downloaded a rom with an English patch for the battle menu and nothing else. I did buy the English games when they released. Ironically, ten years later, I started studying Japanese with my partner for fun. I'm not fluent by any means, but I'm at the point now where I could play through B2W2 in Japanese and get the gist of what's going on.

Generation 5 was the last generation I played that still felt mysterious even months after the official release. Around the time the generation 5 anime came out is when my family couldn’t afford cable anymore so I missed out on the anime. I also wouldn’t afford the tcg bc I was a broke kid so I didn’t get spoiled on the new Pokémon either. You can forget the internet bc this was a time before everyone had smartphones, plus it wasn’t normal for kids to have WiFi access back then. Because of the mystery I searched every nook and cranny of generation 5, they were the first games I completed the Pokedex in! I have vivid memories of patiently waiting for my friend to catch Tornadous so I could borrow it to unlock Landorus. Getting the version exclusives was fun too! It was my first time actually trading to complete my Pokedex. Then when BW2 were announced my mind was blown, everything looked so cool after the timeskip! I also 100% those games and the satisfaction I felt from completing White Tree Hollow is still unmatched. It was a nice bonus getting a shiny Dratini bc I had no clue that was the reward! Just exploring the new areas and enjoying the sequels with my friends was such a nice experience. By generation 6 and onwards everything got spoiled but it wasn’t until generation 7 when the whole game would start getting leaked/ dumped on the internet. It’s why I love generation 5 so much, I experienced Pokémon the way it was meant to be.

Oh my god, I did the same thing with Pokemon Platinum. I had no idea what the Cyrus event was about but I thought the Distortion World was so cool. No halftranslation or anything, I wonder if the early ROMs for the half-translated BW exist still. Someone's bound to have it laying around.

Ha! I played even before you. I remember that I was constantly pressing F5 on niche ROM site that was famous for releasing ROMs early. I was up all night waiting for the link and I clearly remember that there was a piracy protection on the earliest ROM of Black and White that prevented Pokémon from gaining any exp, but a patch was released only 3 days later. I got through the game in Japanese and I still have issues calling gen 5 Pokémon with English names because I got to play the game on an european cartridge months later and by that time I had already learned and got used to the Japanese names. For me, calling my first Pokémon ツタージャ feels much more natural than calling it Snivy!

Pretty sure we played at the same time. I pre-ordered it and played it in Japanese first.

Back when these games came out, my friend at the time had an R4 card and knew how to use Pokegen and during recess he would host different challenges for me to complete for hacked Pokemon. I remember I had a shiny Politoad with Dark Void in Platinum and a shiny Weavile with Spacial Rend. I also remember watching GCMP11 play through BW in JPN, his post game battle with Cynthia was mind blowing to watch as an 11 year old. PS we have the same Battle Frontier desk mat, great choice!

I remember playing a fan translated copy of White Version on an old, laggy laptop back in February 2011. I was in a trip with my family to the countryside for a week, and I had asbolutely NOTHING to do, there was bo internet there. I don't remember how I got the ROM back then, I just know that I picked Mijumaru (Oshawott (and yes, the names of the pokémon were in japanese romaji)), and played at a painfully low FPS. 10 year old me didn't care and just played the heck out of the game during that trip lol that certainly is a core memory for me.

I haven't actually played through BW2 before, so experiencing it for the first time is something I really look forward to! Also, I'm pretty sure with checkpoint on the 3DS, you can save and restore onto the other cartridge without needing a PC, unless I'm misremembering.

Haha, nice. This was my first pokemon game and I remember my first starter being Snivy. Still my favourite pokemon too.

I honestly miss the days when pokemon wasn't a simultaneous worldwide release. It felt so mysterious and exciting watching youtubers play japanese imports of platinum and black and white, seeing new info pop up on serebii, and having something to look forward to for the next few months. I remember fondly the days when we all new Ghetsis as "Geechisu" and everyone assumed from the chanting in the battle theme that his english name was gonna be "Dennis."

Memories!!!! I played it in Japanese too though i was like 16?! Who could forget the one NPC who spoke English 😂

Apparently, back during 2010, there was an English fanmade translation patch for Pokemon Black and WhiteBut it might as well be lost media, I only found a prepatched White rom, no patches or a Black eng translation for the matter, only dead links.

That whole era of waiting for games to be localized always made the wait feel so excruciating!!! By Black and White, I remember people were FAST with English patches for the Pokemon/moves, but not the dialogue. Such an interesting historical era that we don't have to deal with anymore thanks to the worldwide releases! Grats on your armadillo and I hope you continue to enjoy Unova
