Another new Schmincke palette, this time it's retro styled! I’ll swatch and demo it and compare it to the beloved bijou box that's been in the market.

They are made in Europe but are cheaper to buy in America.😅 I honestly don't understand their pricing. They are one of the most expensive watercolour paints to purchase here in Europe. If it didn't cost close to a 100 euros for a travel set, I might purchase them. Your painting was wonderful though.
Maybe watercolor pencils can be used for an initial sketch and then expect the colors to dissolve with the actual watercolor, other than that I don't know how to use them if they don't have enough pigment. It's so pleasing to watch you sketches, all are amazing.
Dimensions please. I want to carry my sketchbook inside. Would this fit a 3.5 x 5.5 pocketbook? Nevermind. This is the edc. Too big for my tastes.
Can I ask what material the white inner part of the lid is? Is it a plastic inner cover?
@@Simone-gr8kh I think it’s enameled paint
Like you I do like to mix my own greens. Less pigmented paints are what I would expect from "student grade" sets. You seemed to manage just fine regardless.
I absolutely love this palette. The watercolor doesn’t bead up on the white parts if you first clean them. Plus, copper doesn’t rust and I love the weight of the box. Heat and acidic compounds cause the green corrosion, so use watercolors and water and this won’t happen. The box might tarnish with time, but so does brass. Enjoy!
Nice to see the comparison! I like Sap Green and Prussian Blue better than Viridian and Ultramarine.
Interesting content but the music is way too loud for the volume level of your voice.
Oh man, I’ll work on that for sure! Thanks
Actually the two yellows are supposed to be different, one is 215 Lemon Yellow PY3, the other 211 Chromium Yellow Hue Lemon PY175. The ultramarines should both be 494 Ultramarine finest, I'm not sure why one swatch came out so much darker than the other.
Oh interesting I’ll double check that. Thanks
Great video, Manal! :) I was thinking about ordering these to make a video but you beat me to it. Jacksons in the UK has schmincke for less usually. I'm a sucker for schmincke also. It was my first "pro" brand upgrade and I've always had a soft spot for them and the cool owl logo haha. Everytime they come out with some unique "gift" thing like this I end up buying it. Like the Giant half-pan 2 years ago that came with a coffee mug and stuff. Love them.
Thanks Jared! It’s so hard to resist these boxes.
Beautiful painting
Thank you! Much appreciated
Such a peaceful moment and beautiful sketch. Thank you! I'd be interested to see your plrin air gear. The idea to have a shelf is perfect! I always seem to have too many tbings and nowhere to put them. If you are.cinsidering new video ideas, I'd love a "show and tell" of your kit, just as you showed what was in your art bag. Loved the video! Thanks!
Can you put a row of half pans cross the centre? If so, what colours would you add?
You can, but only certain kinds that are small pans. I hold add another blue, and lavender. Maybe a white too
I would not buy this palette, for two reasons: first, there are no deep wells to hold a volume of water to make nice washes, and second, I don't know what the surface of the mixing trays is, but it beads up the watercolor very badly, so you cannot see what color you are mixing, or even what the true color is against the background of the white tray; the trays may be plastic which inhibits laying down the water nicely so you can see what color(s) you are dealing with. Porcelain/ceramic would be a much better choice. (Hint, hint, Holbein!!) Your portrait is very nice. Thanks for posting.
Love the tiny box, and have never wanted the one with the water tank. I cannot resist adding four pans to the middle and am very pleased with my retro box. Loved your painting. Hope you have lots of fun with this box. I would swop either the ochre or the raw umber for a nice cool red, or even an additional blue, if I had left my set at 8 colours. The middle won’t take a brush though so why not fill it up? I have both these sets but customising them has led to quite a different feel to each set. To have two of these and 24 colours is amazing and I have even added some dots in a little fold of Yupo paper. A good travel brush and one of these sets in my pocket feels great…
Totally, I up fill up the middle part for sure! Thank you
i don't understand why they included both Raw Umber and Yellow Ochre in this small set. I like the new Raw Umber; they just changed it, but those two colours are very similar. There's already a yellow, no? They might have put in a turquoise or a purple, or even Burnt Umber instead. :) P S - Jealous of that gorgeous box...
I totally agree! So many other options lol
I don't need it but I already have it. The sample painting is amazing and a great way to show what this set can do.
Thank you. Yeah I feel that way bout so many palettes, it’s hard to resist😂
Impressive drawing and painting.
Thank you!
Absolutely love those colors and your test painting was mmm 10/10 chef's kiss <3 cant wait to buy this set for myself its so cute!
Yes they are fun! Thank you so much. Let me know what you think of them when you do.
Painting was more helpful than swatch comparison.
That’s good feedback. Thank you
I liked the swatch comparison
@@olddays-tw9xe I did too. I just preferred the painting segment.
In my experience, the difference between the student quality (Akademie) and the professional line (Horadam) is much smaller than in many other brands. I use both and in many colors, I can't tell the difference at all. They are produced the same way, with gum arabic binder and poured into the pans. It's mostly that the number of colors offered in the Akademie line is much smaller and some poisonous pigments (like cadmium) are replaced by hues.
I think you’re absolutely right
Thanks for this review. I found the palette in Amazon in Germany. The brand you indicated has the same model you showed, marked as "small", and the "large" version is identical to the one sold at Jackson's. Both version in brass and blue. I would be interested to hear how heavy it is and how it performs as an "on the go" palette. I love the design but I am afraid it might be too heavy. How is it working for you?
I really like it! It’s not too heavy the way I use it. But I can see it be heavy if you’re holding stuff in one hand and painting
@@manalwatercolorartistThanks for your reply. I re watched this today, 2minths after your first posting. I appreciated how you created the boundaries for the cap and the lapel, which I missed when I first saw the video. Wonderful portrait.
I love how you painted the portrait and your use of colour.
Thank you so much
I know It's one year ago,but you can buy that tin empty too😊
good to know!! thanks
I thought it was brass. I understand now why they did the blue palette. It look like Copper blue. So the oxidation won't show to much.
I think you’re right
It looks illuminated! And the blue sketching reminds me of old blueprints! How do you like the Richeson travel flat brush? I’m looking to get a flat watercolor travel brush.
It’s my favorite!
Compose blue is the equivalent of Cyan if you have to work to a CMYK palette. The palette looks good, but if it is copper may need a little extra care to keep it from forming a verdigris if the surface gets scratched.
Agreed, we’ll see how it holds up
I think the Van Gogh paints compare to these and are a lot more affordable! But just this case alone makes me want to get this. 😊
Yes! I need to try van gogh
I love Holbein's watercolor so I'm glad you enjoyed them as well 🥰 the palette looks soo nice! Even for a fake
Thank you! I agree, that’s why I bought it immediately lol
What type of pencil is that? I love that the graphite didn't smear or dull your colors!! So lovely!!!
Thank you so much 😀 it’s faber Castel
How can this person only have 50 likes on this vid!?
🤭thanks so much
Love your art
thanks so much!
The music is too loud. It makes it SO hard to struggle to listen to your words, even if uku don't have hearing issues! Sorry! ;) Maybe you can amend for future videos, because you have interesting content ;)
Good point, I’ll work on that. Thanks
It’s been a year- do you find that you use them much?
I try to rotate between all my boxes lol
LOVELY.
thank you so much!
Elles sont très opaques je crois, ça ne gêne pas pour les mélanges et pour la dispersion ?
Elles sont transparentes et comparables à la petite aquarelle de Sennelier.
@@UTleochi Merci beaucoup.
Loved what you are using would have love an itemized list of all the supplies you use
just added the list!
Great video, thank you for sharing.
thank you so much! have you used this paper before?
@@manalwatercolorartist i have a Khadi fatbook , it's not the same paperweight , but i absolutly love it . watercolor looks so pretty on that paper .
I buy these books all the time and have never seen one arrive in such poor condition. Something must have happened in transport. The only problem I find with khadi is in lifting color. it tends to lift top layer of rag and thus damaging the paper.
good point. I have to try that and see
The box is so cute 😮 I want it so badly hahahaha
You didn't say what brand of student grade paint was in your 1st palette.
I like khadi paper too... Colours are really vivid and bright, if one uses medium water it doesn't buckle very much.. and yes you are right the paper flattens on drying 😊.. They also have a 300 gsm bigger sketch book and I like the rough texture of it.. Hazel Sloan uses this in her safari sketching😊
Is it a full pan?tank you🙏
I love that!
Thank ya
Wow!! This is great
Thanks so much
ok thats really good but if you add color its not a sketch
sketching is like a quick doodle
I disagree :) who says adding color makes it not a sketch? I call it a sketch because it’s loose and fast. I’m not doing a lot of thinking behind it
@lolah-on_paws: "SKETCH": /skeCH/ noun 1. a rough or unfinished drawing OR PAINTING, often made to assist in making a more finished picture. "a charcoal sketch" Similar:
@@manalwatercolorartist thats ok if you disagree its jist that my art teacher says that a sketch is a loose quick doodle with no color
Great review! Please change the music next time, I doesn’t compliment your work.
Haha noted!
Oh my this video is great. I love the song and the art is beautiful. You're very underrated!
Thank you so much for the encouragement. I appreciate you!
May I ask why you don’t keep your water on the right side of your work so you don’t have to risk dripping your wet brush onto your painting? I’ve seen many UA-camrs keep the water on the left side and am curious if there’s a reason why.
I just saw she switched it partway through the video, sorry!
