Hi Justin its me Gabriel
Hey!
Good Job! ❤
Thank you!
Which of these 5 areas resonated most with you?
Try applying the techniques in the video (Repetition, Variation and Displacement) to a Blues in F or a tune you know this week. I’d love to hear your results! Sign up for the Waitlist here: www.playbetterjazz.com/course-waitlist/

Thinking in key centers was so... key... for me. Especially on songs with changing key centers. I think key centers and chord tones are easier to navigate than chord scale theory
Absolutely agree with you!

VERY good stuff! Super helpful. I appreciate how real and straightforward you speak about the long-term process of learning jazz piano. The only thing I would add to this, as if this were a conversation, is that for me it's been essential to be aware of how arduous this task is, but to also be easy on yourself. I don't mean to take it easy. This is hard work and you've got to be consistent like you've said. I mean go easy on yourself by not judging yourself and constantly looking for signs of improvement. That mind set will bring you down and you might even give up. For me, what has helped me enormously in this long process has been to accept my current skill level and recognize that I can get a lot of enjoyment out of playing where I'm at right now. It's already a lot of fun to be able to do what I do. Having that to stand on gives me the motivation to keep pressing forward. I don't even think about whether I'm getting better or not, because I know that since I'm the tree (a great analogy), I'm too close to it to see week by week or month to month progress. My motto is work hard at it, enjoy it as much as you can and progress will take care of itself. Thanks Justin! Looking forward to more videos as they come out.
Thanks for your comment! Yes I have talked about that with what my mentor said to focus on and called it "Real Playing" which is playing with where you're at. Accepting where you're at. Enjoying and being curious about the process rather than product. I will definitely mention that in future videos, absolutely agree with you on "work hard and enjoy it." And yes, the progress does come. Thanks for your support!
Really amazing video!!! Thank you!

Sure does take a long time, Justin. I’ve been into jazz for 54 years and still struggling. Never satisfied. Learning curve is endless!! Nice to hear from you again. Thanks Bruce
Hi Bruce, yes I think even Bill Evans himself was never satisfied either!
Hi i have an iq of 140 + .. i have managed to learn fundamental of jazz and compose really jazzy beautiful compositions . . In 5 months . . Did not know even to play the major scale before Also I don't even know notations But I can pick the notes by ear Just a random question ? How rare is it ? And maybe it just the understanding of sound in a much deeper level of geometric shapes and the building blocks of reality 🤯 or maybe I just know how to practice efficiently . . Who knows ? 🧐😊
I'm serious about the question . . I doubt that i have absolute pitch . . But what I do have is a really extraordinary memory that allows me to memorize every note as individual . . The only thing I have ever learned was the major scale . . And then I was able by hearing to figure out , then I decided to embark on a journey to see how much can I figure out without learning from someone or a book . . Just to see how far will I get . .
I know it's not normal but after watching your video i just was curious to know how rare is it ?
Should i stop and just get a teacher or continue with my plan ?

Very helpful!

Nice. One more way to see/use it is as the tritone sub of the altered scale (also coming from the melodic minor scale, one tritone away). An example would be the A section of A Night in Tunisia with the Eb7#11 to D-, where the induced mode of the Eb7 is lydian dominant but I really think of it as A altered. The rest depends on the bass player I guess ;)
Yes, that also works. Everyone seems to think of these kind of things in their own way that makes the most sense to them. I tend to think similarly, and I'll point that out when I do the video on altered coming soon that Lydian Dom's tritone sub is altered and vice versa.

Thanks for this absolutely important , interesting and handy lesson. I liked the information density. Saves so much time , while gaining better insight through comparison.
Dm6 or Bm7-5 with G in the bass = G9...
Thank u. U r videos are great..❤
Like the info. A bit in much with the hands waiving around while you talk, though. Also could go for less affected graphics with the print. I appreciate the truncated lesson but you could spend a little more time on the musical example so one can really hear (digest) the differences between the options presented. Thanks for your efforts!
Thanks for your comment. It's difficult to balance too much playing vs too much talking and keeping the videos short or too long. I've gotten feedback that I played too much in the past...so, doing my best! I'm' trying to keep it visually engaging instead of you the viewer staring at piano keys not doing anything while it's me just talking for periods of time, and reinforcing concepts for those more visually inclined... but thanks for the feedback, I have to start somewhere and I'll keep it in mind.
Nice video. Even without reharm, it always sounds good to play a melodic minor on the 2 of a minor 2-5-1. It is then more common to call it locrian #2 but it really is the same scale. Taking your example in Cm, one can play D locrian #2, or reharm it with Gsusb9 and play G dorian b2, in both cases it is Fm melodic with a natural E giving its particular color
Yes, exactly. I plan on covering Locrian #2 in the next few videos.
Totalmente excelente!

Enjoying your lesson. I have lost the transcrip to the right showing eveything you are demonstrating after downloading . How do I get that back?
Thank you and glad to hear that. I'm not sure what you're referring to exactly and I would have no idea why that is happening. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I do plan on upgrading the production quality in the future which will hopefully resolve this issue.
I wish he wouldn’t play that background music it’s destracting
Sorry it bothers you but it would be more boring without it. It's also to get your ears acclimated/accustomed to what is being covered in the video, there is a reason and intention behind playing the background music... I'll keep that in mind for future videos though.
Beautiful
I just discovered your channel thanks for sharing your gift 📦
Nice lessons, big thanks🙏🙏 What the song in video?
All 3 songs are Ahmad Jamal :) Intro and main part is "Maybe September". After my playing example is the standard "Have You Met Miss Jones?" End song at the very end is "Call Me". Do you hear the use of Imitation in "Call Me"? :D
Great tips! I’ll be trying this next session.
