Pre-War Troubles with the M1 Garand | (5-Digit SA CMP Field Grade)
The legendary M1 .30 Caliber Rifle has humble beginnings. No legend is born without flaws, and the M1 Garand underwent a number of substantial redesigns and modifications to address issues as they were discovered.
Note of Clarification (7th Round Stoppage): The affected receiver rib is on the left side, but counterintuitively it induces malfunctions with cartridges on the right side. As I understand it, that rib helps guide the nose of cartridges from the right-side as they turn to enter the chamber. Without it, the cartridge can miss the chamber and cause a failure to feed.
I goofed that up while filming and am fixing it now as best as I can (sorry). I expect additional confusion because it is misquoted elsewhere on the internet that the right-hand FTFs were caused by the right side receiver rib. But as you can clearly see it is the front left-side receiver rib that was affected and repaired. Then the Garand Collectors Association (GCA) demonstrated with an original un-repaired early M1 that the malfunction occurs on the right-side.
GCA: thegca.org/7th-round-stoppage-project/
GCA Video (it's pretty great): ua-cam.com/video/IuDy74KE5LE/v-deo.html&ab_channel=CivilianMarksmanshipProgram
Final Note: Yes, this is the same Turkish return M1 that had the note in it (see previous video ua-cam.com/video/UXqPOb4nCIk/v-deo.html). It's the Garand that keeps on giving.

Easy Fix for M1 Timing (Premature Bolt Release)
Переглядів 11 тис.2 роки тому
The easiest way to (usually) fix the timing in your M1. My experience has been that recent CMP M1s release the bolt prematurely, making loading more difficult than it should be. This is an easy fix that anyone can do (check the clip latch spring while you're at it too). Longtime M1 owners likely know this already, but maybe this will help at least one new M1 owner somewhere. A good resource: ww...
A Soldier's Note I Found In My M1 Garand (CMP Field Grade)
Переглядів 186 тис.2 роки тому
A quick look at a hand-written note, stuffed in the buttstock of an M1. Admittedly not Hollywood dramatic in its content, but real life rarely is. Some however might find it more relatable, more human, that way. What have you found stuffed inside an old milsurp?
USGI M1911A1 (CMP Field Grade) | What Are You Getting Yourself Into?
Переглядів 69 тис.3 роки тому
Interested in USGI 1911s or CMP 1911s specifically? Here we examine a 1944 Colt/Remington Rand m1911a1 fresh from the CMP. Enjoy!
One of my garands had a note from Audie Murphy… another had “PFC Lee Marvin” carved into the stock.
Murphy carried a Thompson or a carbine
What causes the clip to not seat and then having to slightly pull the oprod back to realese it to send the bolt foward ?
I found a price tag for 25.00 in my buttstock of my garand lmao
Just replaced mine with the wrapped ones like u got but now the clip goes in fine and locks but the bolt doesnt release. If i pull the bolt back slightly and release it it drops fine and then i slap it into place or really push it into the chamber
That’s normal
@toastedfish996 as far as I know the bolt should release at the same time as the clip locks in
@@Mibit911Technically as soon as you let go of the clip, it *should* close the bolt. As long as you retain pressure on the clip as you insert it, the bolt should remain open.
Beautiful piece of history. But please go buy a replica 1911 A1 for heavy shooting and competition. Those pistols are almost 100 years old. They’re a collectors piece. Don’t wear it out. You can buy a Tisas 1911 A1 US army clone that is extremely accurate to the real deal. They cost $400 bucks and you can put thousands of rounds through it.
I bought a few of these post war Bullet Guides in the wrap to have to have. The accelerator point is higher and matches the peened one I have. But I am finding that they don’t seem to fit inbeween the receiver legs and are wider than my older bullet guide. My receiver is a 1943 Springfield.I was expecting it to drop in. I have only opened the one. If this a part that needs fitting or are post war receivers a little wider? I tool a file to it but am so so at fitting things and it is slightly off so harder to get the pin in. But it does time right. Curious if this should even need fitting.
Im not by any means an expert so please excuse me if i offer a stupid suggestion, but what are the date stamps on the packaging if any? Are they for .308 M1s? Not sure if theres a major difference between the two besides the chamber and that block in the magazine well to prevent 30-06 from going in.
What you're getting yourself into? It's the luck of the DRAW, you're getting an 80year + old military surplus pistol. A piece of history, nothing more!
Is there any way to time it for correct operation with a 5 round clip? Lets leave it at my state wont allow more than 5 rounds. When I push down the 5 rounder it neither locks in place or sends the bolt forward. I have to hold the clip with 1 thumb and give the oprod a tug with the other hand and release so it strips the first round. If a traditional 8 round clip is used, its perfect. If it is what it is, that's fine but I was just curious
what a beauty....a 1911
A few months ago I received a CMP Expert grade M1 and was surprised at the low serial number 24XXX. I shot several clips of Grand approved ammo and had the 7 th round jam on every clip. Cleaning, lub, different maker of clips solved the issue. Believe it or not, I also felt everything was too tight and needed more shooting to loosen a few things up. In your video I notice your rifle has the same “dimple” on the top of the recall repair as mine. I wonder why the dimple is there.
Mine shoots a round and spits out the clip with the ammo??
Mine too. Could be a bad clip or a bad clip latch spring
@@Gunlover6500That's exactly what the problem is replace your clip latch spring
Question, my oprod will not release when a clip is fully inserted, unless I manually pull the charging handle back, any solution to that? Is it also a bullet guide issue?
Fixed it. I installed a new Op Rod catch and now I can get Garand thumb like a chad
Actually a properly timed M1 is not supposed to release but should require a tap ( saw a clip of Mr Garand his rifle required a slap on first round) he designed it to do that thus no one should be getting a Garand thumb😄
Those issues are the same ones that I had on my modern series 80 Colt competition 1911. Go figure. Interested to see what the CMP will send my way when my number gets called. Poorly fit safety and barrel link.
You never do tell the price of it so everyone will know
awesome video thank you thank you.
I just sent my forms in. I don’t care what grade I get, I’m shooting it.
Great video Sir, I’m purchasing it because I want something coming out of the Army, I retired from the Army and want something a soldier once carried. I would probably change a lot of the internals just to be safe. Take care and appreciate your videos.
Chamber flags? Omg. I can tell the government got to you.
Funny thing, I just bought a m1 garand from the CMP, and it was having the same timing issues you describe. As I examined the mechanics of it it seemed like the hump on the bullet guide was a little too high, and I confirmed it with my calipers. I filed and stoned a small amount off the hump, and now the timing is perfect. I wonder if maybe it was the same case for your rifles. Maybe the CMP is using brand new bullet guides that haven't been fit to the rifles yet, and thats why the timing is off. If you still have the bullet guides that came with your rifles, maybe try taking a little material off and see if the timing is corrected....
I have a #384,xxx Springfield and I sometimes get the seventh round misfeed. But mine seems to be from short cycling. I have some new parts coming and I'm going to get the piston and gas cylinder checked.
I got a M1 from the CMP and 80% of the time the clip ejects itself with ammo still left in the clip.
Replace the clip latch spring.
@@pierredefecto977 I did and nothing changed
Try using a different clip. If that don't solve the problem it could be a second bad clip latch spring or the clip latch itself is worn and needs replacing. Also I have seen the clip latch pin being bent cause a Garand to go wonky.
I found a note in my Cetme rifle parts kit, if anyone wants to see it msg me.
Bought an original colt 1943 pistol with much of the original finish and all parts, tight, tight, tight for fifteen hundred. That pistol is very worn, little if any finish and like you said, a mix master. I like it, but then again i like ALL 1911's!
The Newest US soldier rifle is a drone rifle that the soldier can operate remotely. It can navigate anything but water currently. It currently has a 20 round capacity And auto retracts Its path when empty. It can navigate ditches and rocks with a little trouble at all. The US Leads weapons research continuously.
better get that thumb out of the way of the bolt ! it will hurt !
Just a note. The feed ramps on these pistols willl not feed hollow points. I have one Remington Rand Slide and Ithica Frame. A good strait shooter and runs well. Great buy.
Mr Browning designed it to run .45 ball and that it does well.
Looks just like the ones I was issued and carried in the late 70s thru the mid 80s.
Nice gun dude. So what you got is a pre 1918 slide. If the frame was a Colt you'd have a treasure. However the frame is is probably WW -2 early 2 generation because you have a short trigger.
Can a colt slide be dated by the serial number?
@@davidl8425 no only the frame!! However the way the front site is pinned and the size can tell you what generation as well as the rear sites if they weren't already replaced
@@enricomandragona163 so the frame and slide weren't matched by serial numbers? I have a colt frame 1717899 and slide 734xxx. Thanks
@@davidl8425 I have an Ithaca 1944 with a similar number and was made by Colt as I looked it up under Colts registry finder
@@davidl8425 The Bluing on the slide is alo an indication if it's original to the gun . Watch Mr Colt 45 videos very informative
I agree with you these guns are not daily shooters but collectibles. I wish I could get more. Nice piece with history. I have an RGN for round 4. Hope I get a good choice.
My RGN 10838 and received a fie;d grade Ithaca 1944 slide and frame. Very happy!
take the bullet guide and a small ball peen hammer and tap it on the point of the guide to beef up the tip.
get a timing block
Great video! I just got my number assigned, so hoping to get a call soon. I know it is a bit pricey, but I think it is a good investment given the popularity and history. Good luck everyone!
dont forget to also make sure your using surplus enblocs and not the crappy repro ones because they also will make it seem like your timing is off.
You are giving information that's available elsewhere. But you take time to explain and show it. Thanks for making this video.
I'd like to find a way to make the clips easier to bottom out. Seems to take a good amount of force.
You wait until minute 12 to tell us that you arent a 1911 guy...
How common is this lighter parkerization on these CMP 1911's? Was it a certain branch or period that were issued these? Seems like most are the dark finish.
Just received (11/17/22) my CMP "Service " grade.. GRATEFUL for CMP and the work they do. My snit is his "field grade" is more "genuine " than mine. The slide on mine is tagged "GI Rep" on a Remington Rand frame serial number in late 1943 production, a late model magazine. There is no way to determine when the slide was joined to the frame or who manufactured it. This questions the authenticity and any subsequent value. SO, it now becomes a "shooter" not an "investment " relic in the gun locker. I'll STILL enjoy having it. CHANGE 1. I found out that NO NAME reproduction slide is a genuine Colt made National Match Hard slide with a chrome lined barrel (.45 AUTO '85). Certainly changed my opinion of my pistol and THANKS CMP.
You can’t sell them. None of these are an investment. They are heirlooms.
It has a permanent home.obtw. 7/7/23. my lady just got her 1943 Colt/Remington Rand service grade, exceptionally nice. She is the widow of a WWII/POW. Active in the American Legion Auxiliary and a trained member of a shooting range. It has also found a forever home.
How long was it from whenever they stopped taking orders until you received your email with the rgn?
Mine was about 5 months
Shes a legend bub
Super informative and just well done video Mine is a 1944 re barreled in 1945 Posted it on My UA-cam today Its interesting but no note Thats just Epic!!! Great video
Or you can just hold charging handle
Bunda, mean( mother) atur mean (organise)
The letter word like in Asia region can be sound Indonesia word or Philippines deep in rural area
Love your pistol, but the video. The focus is in and out, and in and out. All the time. Please keep a constant distance between the lens and the object. Try not do Macro on the fly, because the focus will be shifting. Sorry, my eyes are getting tired from watching this. Practice makes it prefect. I'm sure your future videos will be better.
SOUND is so low ,it is impossible to discern what is being said. I was very interested but I now disenguage, and move to a different site.
My clip shoots out with rounds in it while I’m firing
In your case it might be the clip latch or the latch spring is worn, my “new” gun from CMP does the same, getting a replacement latch and spring now.
Had the same problem. I replaced bolt & bolt catch.
I never knew that Justin Tradeau owned a 1911
