Abandoned Cape Breton
Canada
Приєднався 25 лис 2023
Cape Breton, nestled in the eastern part of Nova Scotia, was once a thriving hub of industry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The abundant natural resources and strategic location of this island attracted industries such as coal mining, steel production, and textiles. The coal mines employed generations of families, the steel mills produced iron that built this nation, and the textile factories wove a fabric woven with resilience. However, as time passed and industries evolved, many of these buildings became obsolete. Slowly but surely, they were left to decay, becoming haunting reminders of a distant past. In this channel, I venture into these forgotten places, uncovering their stories while embracing the thrill of urban exploration.
Abandoned Baseball Fields of Cape Breton Part I
Kicking off the new year with a new video about abandoned baseball fields I found. There are plenty more to visit and discover all over the island which leads into the importance of baseball to Cape Bretoners. I cover some history and have a gander at the many abandoned fields left vacant in Cape Breton's communities. Let me know if I hit this one out of the park in the comments!

Cape Bretoners Are So intelligent that even though the Liberals Have Ruined Cape Breton , Ruined Nova Scotia And Are In The Process Of Destroying The Rest Of Canada Capers Will Still Vote Liberal ! Thanks To The Liberals Cape Breton has Become A INDIAN SHITHOLE !!
I was doing research into French settlements a few years back and found evidence of possibly the oldest French settlements around, maybe the oldest in North America for the French predating Fort Royal in the valley. The evidence is hard to come across but on Scatarie island there was an area built and settled from the late 1500’s till early 1600’s called Fort Rosemar, before eventually moving off the island and creating the settlement of Baleine. It is pretty cool to think about and I did get ahold of some people higher up trying to get them to check it out, not sure if anyone else bothered to look into it
I've been obsessed with Scatarie Island for a while. Hoping to get there at some point but it's difficult to get ride there. Otherwise it's a lot of paddling and walking. Might have to be an overnight adventure.
@ it is an adventure to get there for sure but a beautiful little island. there are lots of sharks around the island too so for some it can be sketchy paddling over
Cape Bretons a waste of life
I live up the street from Marconi Towers field. It was built for the families of the workers during construction of the Heavy Water Plant. Right next to the field there were homes for the workers. I haven't been able to find any pictures. Send me a message if you'd like to know more
This is great. Mystery solved! I'll pin this to the top.
Fabulous videos!!!
Thank you for watching!
Cape Breton is a beautiful island filled with wonderful people. It is truly sad what happened there. Hello from the province in the middle that no one knows about..
How's Manitoba doing?
@AbandonedCapeBreton the other province in the middle Lol. Not too bad is SK. Can't wait till spring.
@@mikebender9080 I used to live in Prince Albert, so the only province in the middle that's weird to me is Manitoba. I've never met anyone from there, even when driving through it.
There are dozens of fields in most small communities almost completely gone. I'm glad someone is documenting the more recent history before it becomes lost to time.
Trying to get as much of it as I can!
Old ballfield on Gouthro Road, 300m in on left side from the Frenchvale end of of Gouthro Road, if you use the Google Earth and age the pictures from 1985 you will see it. Across from a cattle field on the south side of the road, you will see the old fencing still there - good luck.
Thanks!
There is an old ball field in Birch Grove that is really grown in and all the fences beat down I’d say 35-40 years ago since it’s been used, I found it exploring out there in 2015. It is behind some people’s trailer homes at the top of 5th and 6th street in birch grove, it’s in a big field and there are atv trail’s going around and through what use to be the field which is now almost all alder bush and thorns. Out Birch Grove area there are lots of cool old abandoned cars and structures in the woods.
Found it. I suspected there was one back there... Thanks!
I work in Cumberland County. Unfortunately there is a lot of abandoned fields there too.
No doubt! Thanks for watching!
I love the channel, as a Cape Bretoner I think exploring some of older buildings in New Waterford, Glace Bay, Baddeck, etc. would be really cool to see, especially the sports ones, maybe investigate the New Waterford rink fire in '76, great video. I also know the guys who own the Marconi home, I've been inside it, really nice home too. I also have family near the home
Thanks for the support!
It was always a thing with the old company houses that, if yours was on a certain side, you couldn't get a shower standing up because your roof slanted over your bathtub.
True story, I remember that well.
Some great shots of places I have great memories of
Thanks for stopping by.
I used to live in Beaverbank in the late 50s before my father was posted to North Syracuse New York. Before that we were at two different bases in Quebec. You didn’t mention them. After Syracuse my father worked in the Sage complex in North Bay Ontario until he retired in 1966. I’d like to hear more about the Quebec stations in Lac St. Denis and Mont Apica Quebec. Will you do more on these bases or are you primarily interested in Nova Scotia? I was born in Nova Scotia before my father went back into the Air Force.
For now, just exploring places on Cape Breton. Always up for a road trip though, so you never know!
Not Cape Breton-related, but I used to live in Edmonton. There was a disused baseball field located directly behind my place of work. Oddly, this was in an industrial area and there was no public access to the ball field; it was completely surrounded by private businesses. The site was not overgrown, but full of gopher(?) holes making even walking a challenge.
Perhaps things decay differently with gophers around!
I thought I posted this a few minutes ago, but I don't see it here? There is an abandoned Ball Field behind the Georges River Fire Hall. You can see the large arched metal sign in Streeview in Google Maps, to the left of the Fire Hall Building, at the back of the parking lot. It says 'John Moore Memorial Ball Field'. Another one I don't have any information on... 1208 Georges River Rd, Georges River, NS.
There is an abandoned Ballfield in Belgiumtown (part of Reserve Mines), at the end of Belgium Street. I don't have any information on this one either. You can see it easily in aerial views, and you can see the Backstop in Streetview (once you zoom in a bit) on Google Maps, from the end of Belgium Street, Reserve Mines, NS. When I remember more of these abandoned fields I'll add them.
These are great, thanks.
There is an abandoned Ballfield on Hillside Boularderie Road, Boularderie Island. It is a short distance up the first (abandoned) driveway past (to the west of) 3440 Hillside Boularderie Rd, Southside Boularderie, NS. There are a couple of large brown Telephone Infrastructure Cabinets at the road by the driveway, and a sign (now blank) part way up the driveway. All clearly seen on Streetview on Google Maps. The area right behind the Telephone Cabinest used to be an outdoor rink, back when you could count on cold enough weather to keep a rink usable. I assume the local Volunteer Fire Department used to maintain it, and probably the Ball Field too, but that is just a guess.
Thanks Ken!
If you head to the maginis mill in Frenchvail , there is a spot on the road where you can turn right and drop down onto a drit road , once on that road you'll cross a wooden bridge then start looking to your left and you'll see home plate of a old ball field
That sounds like a good spot, thanks!
@AbandonedCapeBreton np
@AbandonedCapeBreton it's called boirnot road I think
Think it might be Gouthro Rd. The road is immediately before Talbot House. Pull off Frenchvale rd , head down gravel rd , cross the brook as another person said. First clearing on the left is the field. Looks like a tennis court might be there as well as there’s a rectangle pad near the field. It’s about a 30 second drive from Frenchvale rd.
@@BarnDustandRust I think you are right, that's where I found it on google earth.
There is an abandoned Ballfield behind the Georges River Fire Hall, the 'John Moore Memorial Ball Field". i don't know anything about it... Look at Streeview on Google Maps and you can see the large metal sign. 1208 Georges River Rd, Georges River, NS
There was a large park in Sydney mines long before my time. It had a fountain, tennis courts, and a baseball field. The field is barely recognizable now, but when I was a kid we used to use home plate as a jump for our bikes. It's mostly overgrown, no buildings. The only evidence That something was there is the asphalt where the tennis court used to be.
Brown st well Dwyer st perhaps and the ball field still gets used from time to time
I love your videos! My boyfriend and I go adventuring and exploring around the island and I love seeing your point of view and footage of these places. Thank you for keeping the memories and history alive!
Happy travels, adventurers.
I know some guys that grew up on marconi towers road. I'll ask about the field.
I've very curious about that field. Appreciate it!
I sent a message to my buddy. I remember as a kid it was a dirt road, I'm 60 now so that would have been in the 70s.
There is another abandoned ball field I know of behind Cameron Bowl close to the Tennis court, it kind of the looks like the Marconi Towers one!
Thanks, I'll check it out!
This is a great video. I'm a huge baseball fan and have an affection for abandoned fields. In regards to the comment above there is actually 2 fields in that area. They're right behind Jewels & Gems Daycare in GB. If you look on google maps you'll see them. I believe they were used years ago for t-ball but I'd live more info if anyone has it.
Not one, but two small abandoned Ball Fields actually, just behind Jewels & Gems Day Care on Marial St. in Glace Bay. You can't see them in Streetview, but they are obvious in aerial view.
@KenHeaton Oh yes that one too
Let’s go dig them out! Build it and they will come!
If you want more abandoned industry sites there is the Glace Bay heavy water plant and the nearby seaboard power plant.
I know some unique places in Cape Breton if you want some more places.
Yes, please send some over.
I love urbex, especially in cape Breton. I'm forever turamitized after finding a rotting corpse in the shed of a small trailer home. I couldn't call the police because I had no reception. Maps didn't work, so I don't know where the house is.
That's horrible. I hope the police were eventually notified and that it didn't discourage your explorations.
Hi! Will the next video be WWII Coastal Defence? Curious if you’re planning a January upload?
Yes, I have several project on the go, just have to finish one. Should be soon! Will not be on a WWII Coastal Defense area in January.
Great video👍
Some of them should have been given heritage status and looked after. The ones at the Glace Bay Miners Museum are nice, but not enough.
I agree!
germany was shitting out a u-boat every 14 days at 2 different yards if i'm not mistaken. They eventually ran out of crew to man them.
I live right by there but i've never been down oxford so no one has ever mentioned the existence of it to me. I can bike there in ten minutes ffs. cool video.
You should check it out! While it's still there...
That graveyard is in sorry state. Whoever owns the land should be ashamed. We got paid time and a half on davis day, not worth the loss of life. Our island is better off without the mining industy. It killed my grandfather. Cape Breton coal isnt in high demand because of the low methane level so power plants lose money if they burn it because of the wear and tear on machinery.
The book "Each Man's Son" was required reading in grade 12 english class at Memorial high. It takes place in turn of the last century glace bay. It's a decent book if you're into mindless fiction and family drama. Not an insult against the book, I liked it better than any other book we read in high school, except Shakespeare plays and the romantic poets. i finished highschool in 97 haha, shit im old. good Content man! I grew up in North Sydney but live in Florence. Funny fact, if you live near the cliff on a numbered street in Glace Bay, it takes longer to get to reserve st than it does to get from reserve st to downtown sydney. So many stop signs in Glace Bay. East of CBU is like another planet from the Northside but I know alot of great people over there.
So true. Some days when you are in a hurry you hit every red light🧐🚦🚥
The one's at the Top of victoria rd were owned by managers mostly. A big reason they're falling into disrepair is because a fire bug in glace bay was setting one on fire almost every weekend about a decade ago and now it's really hard to get them insured. I have contacts if you ever want to get into a certain place. I do not want to be in any videos but I make introductions and whatnot. My email is public and I enjoy urban exploration.
Do you explore yourself or just enjoy watching online?
@@AbandonedCapeBreton I haven't been out in a while but i always used to find strange places when going geocaching with friends years ago. i'd let them find the cache and just enjoy the hike. I've camped all over the place when i was a kid. random places all over the island. i'm of the opinion we live in the most beautiful place in the world. purely subjective opinion though haha. I plan to get back out soon when it warms up a bit. I dont fancy slipping in the woods with no cell signal and only a portable ham radio to call for help haha.
@@jstro-hobbytechI forgot that my mom lived in half a company house on Richmond Street for a while. Back to back to the ones on Victoria road. She did some interesting wallpaper and paint jobs inside to cover over the imperfections in the straightness of the walls. She had a way of making everything cozy.
The kitchen was huge tho and my son liked playing hockey with my brother's there when he was just a tot. Indoor hockey. Good times in grandma's kitchen ❤
@ Nothing better than memories of grandma!
Grew up in one in New Waterford Wilson Avenue it's still there with many more
There's no basements in them I lived in one
I would love to see a video on Louis-Simon le Poupet de la Boularderie. Where did he live, it seems the history is tied into the fall of Louisburg.
He died June 6, 1738 and didn't seem to serve in Louisbourg. Still an important character in the colonial history of Canada and I'd have to look into him more to tie him to Louisbourg.
Isnt this a 3rd upload? I swear its a 3rd time. Im supportin it either way but I swear this is 3.
Yeah, it is. I think there was some sound issues on the first.
Yes, there were some corrupted files that made a less than great experience. This one seems okay.
Stirling Mine is a neat place for sure. First time I went there it was dark which made it much more interesting I think. When we 'turned the corner' around the wall that kinda obscure the...flood plain...as you put it, wow what a thing that was. If you go back definitely linger on that flood plain because your video does not do it justice at all! What a fantastic yet disgusting mark we left on this landscape there!
This is such a good video, very well done and informative..
Thank you! William’s American 4th great grandson thanks you💪🏽
