Marvelous example of musical modernism at its best.

Timestamps would have been useful...
As a lover (more like a devotee) of Mahler's musical creations ever since the early 1960s (during the "Mahler revival" spearheaded by Bernstein), I found this chamber-music version of his 9th something of creative curiosity. Yes, it captures much of the essence of the symphony, but it still cannot be a substitute for the orchestral version that Mahler himself intended. It's like the throwback to those old days when music lovers would get together and play the piano or chamber-music version of their favorite music, including selections from operas and symphonies. Much as I like Liszt's piano rendition/transcription of Beethoven's symphonies, I still return to the full orchestral version eventually. Having said that, I greatly appreciate this performance.
Thank you very much for your kind comment. I fully agree with you. These arrangements for chamber orchestra have no intention to replace the original. However they are very usefull to reach an audience which could possibly not get a close contact to the large symphony halls. This was exactly our purpose here, as we performed the puiece in a small church in a remote small town. Certainly at least for a half of the audience this was a first contact with a live performance of a Mahler Symphony (even if very certainly everybody knew the piece from CD). Furthermore it was for the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain a healthy confrontation to another repertoire as they are usually performing, means contemporary music. You maybe will also enjoy Klaus Simon's arrangement of Mahler 3d and 6th, as I performed them as a premiere with the Musikkollegium Orchestra Winterthur. Have an hear on my channel moherr1. Also both as a curiosity to enjoy!
Many thanks for your additional English translation
I do not know what it means That I should feel so sad; There is a tale from olden times I cannot get out of my mind. The air is cool, and twilight falls, And the Rhine flows quietly by; The summit of the mountains glitters In the evening sun. The fairest maiden is sitting In wondrous beauty up there, Her golden jewels are sparkling, She combs her golden hair. She combs it with a golden comb And sings a song the while; It has an awe-inspiring, Powerful melody. It seizes the boatman in his skiff With wildly aching pain; He does not see the rocky reefs, He only looks up to the heights. I think at last the waves swallow The boatman and his boat; And that, with her singing, The Loreley has done.

These transcriptions will allow this magnificent music to be played by more ensembles and musicians.
Merci beaucoup.

Did Klaus Simon transcribe all Mahler's symphonies ?
I conducted "his" Nr 3 last week as a premiere. Coming soon on youtube. Klaus said it would be the last possible one to be transcribed, as he achevied now 1,3,4,5,6,7, and 9. I do agree with him. 2 and 8 wouldn't be reasonnable. All transcriptions available at Universal Edition Wien.
Wonderful performance!

Ah, and do I hear a trombone here (which is not listed at the UE website)? Great job by the way!
No trombone. Maybe we did it well "as if"! I added a 3rd Horn to double and relieve. Same way for he trumpet. Mahler 3 coming soon in February 2021, same Arrangeur, same orchestra, same conductor. I'm not sure it could work because of the many divisi passages in the strings... Tank you for asking!
How many strings are playing here?
Hi dadshome2, we did it with a 4.4.3.3.2. String section as decided together with Klaus Simon. According to me it wouldn't be wise to do it with a solo 5tet.

This arrangement is published by Universal Editions Wien. Listen also Simon's arrangement of Mahler 6th and 3d on my channel. Best greetings
Hi, where can I have the parts?
Score and parts are published by Universal Edition Wien, as well as all Mahler symphonies transribed by Klaus Simon
I think it works well, to be enjoyed on it's own terms as a chamber piece (and not as a replacement to the magnificent original). The only suggestion would be that Simon seems to be against using timpani, and in some other recordings of Simon's other Mahler symphony chamber versions, timpani has been added back in. (Using piano as a timpani substitution by Simon seems rather clunky.)
Dear Wilson, This is a discussion we had together with Klaus. In this specific case I also would prefer the sound of timpani. His idea is to remain as close as possible to a "chamber sound" without loosing the symphonic mood. I will conduct in February the premiere of his version of Mahler 3rd. It will surely appear on youtube.
I agree completely. I was totally convinced by this realisation and was greatly enjoying it until the tympani fate theme in the finale. This should be so powerful (above all in the final bars), and on the piano it's barely audible - so this is a definite failure in terms of the stated aim of this arrangement, which is clarity of line. But even without adding tympani, I hear a bass drum and side drum: both of these could have reinforced that all-important line and given it the necessary weight. Not a perfect solution, but surely better than not being able to hear it.
Good job! This could be very helpful in these strange times!
Strange times, indeed !!
A Mahler's symphony without it's custumary punch power? Sorry but it simply doesn't work.
Hi Carlos Thank you for your comment. If you apprehend Mahler's music only as a punching music you'll hardly appreciate this kind of arrangement. I think however there are many details that remain hidden in the original version precisely because of the opulence of the orchestration. Klaus Simon’s work reveals on many occasion the quintessence of the symphony. Nevertheless your opinion is absolutely respectable!
@@moherr1 , Thank you for your words. I strongly believe that a great deal of Mahler's power in communication and enchantment stands hidden in ppp passages for some instruments although the other members of the orchestra keep the ordinary dinamics of their voices. It is not to be heard and one can just barily fill it. It is obviously not a voice of its own, (something that some new maestros don't respect and proudly bring it forward as a great new discovery! Urrrgh!) but it is there for a simple important reason: colour. It may seem to be of little importance but the lack of it shows not. Well, for my old ears, at least. Cheers
That's only your opinion. Good music works also in different dresses. Think of Schönbergs "Verein für musikalische Privataufführungen". And in Corona Times these arrangements are so beloved and are played around worldwide....
@@CarlosPenteado Than you should hear better in the recording. Nothing of the oroginal is missing. No note. Look in the score and you will believe me.
Not bad at all, especially for a live version. The soprano has a beautiful voice, but perhaps better suited for romantic opera ? Heavy vibrato and powerful portamenti make the harmony and ornements less clear and veloce. It does provide expressive intensity though. Thanks for sharing this vidéo !
Well, it sounds like a compliment, thank you! Maybe you will appreciate Jeannine's voice in this video ua-cam.com/video/DJiqK1FAqTY/v-deo.html

Klaus Simon a déjà orchestré 1, 4, 5, 7, 9.
