I found THE BEST way to kill the WEEDS on my Allotment- NO DIG GARDENING Beginner
Переглядів 1,6 тис.3 місяці тому
In this episode - i cleared away the remaining weeds on my allotment plot & then started to lay down the weed suppressant membrane which will hopefully rot down the remainder of the weeds underneath. I also spent WAY too much time splitting wood to then hold the sheet down incase of strong winds.

I got ill for 2 weeks so wasn't able to come to the allotment. The whole time i was very worried about what i would come back to & having to start from scratch. Luckily it wasn't as bad as i thought... I also took action on some of the kind people who mentioned i shouldn't be using the blue pallet as it has cancer causing toxins. If your pallet is marked with an MB - methyl bromide, then you sh...

YES H!! - awesome you've found another option for content when the allotment is wet and the weather is oh so British haha
you need a firebin. great for getting rid of garb & really powerful itt,ll burn greens once at full flow .
About 80 to 85 feet given a rod is 16 to 17 foot.
Looks good,
😊
Your over engineering your compost bin, just get some wire and tie them with that and lose the base pallet you do not need it. Have a look at Charles dowding composting video he shows you have to make simple compost bin with pallets, problem 5 minutes work 😊
👍
Good luck with new plot, Subscribed
"Nose holes" 😂
Oh, and please don't contribute to our global platic and microplastic contamination problem. There really is no need for sheet plastic 😢 Cardboard will smother weeds if you feel thats needed, its free, and the worms LOVE it, bringing more fertility to your plot, as will chop & drop, also adding fertility. There are some great videos about composting in the paths between beds also. Those nettles are gold. Thanks for sharing your journey and being open to us garden nuts. 😂
What are you doing darling? Pallet compost bins dont need a top or bottom, which you still seem to be building after just stating that you understand not needing a bottom 🤷🏻♀️ Those three pallets should all be standing on edge making a cube. It looks like you just built the same box, with a floor, over again 😅 You can make a door, but you don't want a solid wall on the front as it will make you miserable trying to turn the compost and or retrieve the finished compost from the bottom. A tarp can be thrown over the top in the rainy season to prevent over saturation (you could make a lid/top, But be sure you can easily move it out of your way). Having the compost directly on the ground allows for all the microorganisms and worms to move freely in and out, this being necessary for efficient composting, they do the work 🙃 Blessings and support 🙏🏻
Who told you to build a 'floor' on your compost bin? The compost needs to be in contact with the soil so the worms and microorganisms can move in and break down your organic 'waste'. Worms can't jump through air 🙃 All that life from the soil is what does the composting! 🙏🏻 Get rid of the 'floor' love.

Chop & drop!! Check out David the Good. Nettles are free nutrients / fertilizer / biomass for soil health, humas, organic matter etc. what a windfall! And nettles are medicinal!
Can we have a steak one next!
🤤
Yum
Looks tasty 👍
My mistake you are using weed membrane I saw it on the close up you kept saying plastic so it threw me sorry
Ha I used wood that’s from my mums garage that my dad must of got 30 40 years earlier lol they have their day eventually . I take back a previous comment I think my woodworking skills are actually a bit better than yours lol appreciate the content enjoyable video
Your woodworking skills are on a par with mine lol
Nice watch I thought I would be arrested when I got a pallet off the side of a road lol the reality is they can’t give them away fast enough . I will be building compost beds in the next few weeks so I will see how you get on with yours
Hello I have a video on my channel All about pallets and the good ones and bad ones you may want to have a look 👍👍 new subscriber here 👍
where ya at H - it's been a minute hope all is good with the family
All good mate! Just been busy with the little ones. Will be making beds soon!
I connected my pallets together with wire… make a loop and twist… it’s very strong if you use good wire
Hi. The plastic weed sheeting that previous gardeners put down has been a nightmare in our community garden for several reasons. It breaks down eventually and shreds and bits of micro plastic go into the soil everwhere. Over time, weeds grow on it anyhow ifyou add wood chips because they build soil. Some grasses grow underneath it, eg couch grass, and grow into the weave. It has been an environmental hazard which is difficult to fix.
That’s so unfair what were the committee thinking of letting it get like that.
Hi Hunain. Just stopped on your channel. Get rid of the blue pallet ASAP. It contains chemicals and you wouldn't want to be eating food grown from compost from a bay that has that.
Hello, thanks for the video. I’ve recently taken on a plot and I have a pallet compost bin, mine wasn’t overgrown but the soil is terrible so I have dug in all kinds of clippings and manure and have planted green manure seeds. All the best with yours sir
I’ve been watching a lot of no dig method videos. Charles Dowding is amazing, as well is Anne of all trades. Check them out!!
Sections of small pvc pipe are also good to add before the last few hits of the pegs, about 20cm lengths. Stops the rips a bit more in the weed control. 🤙🏻 great vid
@@Grahams_Greens great tip!
I've done the same except I've left one area to work on. What I may do is use my flame torch to cut holes in the fabric and then just plant into the holes. The flame will melt the edges and stop the fraying
Yep, has been around for decades
How often do you post? I've subscribed to your channel but not sure if I've missed any. Excited to see how your plot develops and looking forward to experiencing the journey with you👍
It completely depends on when i can get out there, not currently easy with 2 young kids haha
I’m excited to see how it goes
Definitely no manure on the membrane (big no no). Leave the plastic on until the spring. Then take it up and replace it with cardboard and put at least 100mm of compost/well rotted manure straight on top of the cardboard. You can plant into it straight away. You will still get a few bits of bindweed, couch grass, ground elder or bramble that will survive but you can then just dig them up or keep pulling out the growth and eventually they will disappear. I did what you are doing at this time last year but with two or three applications of cardboard instead of plastic and I now have maybe a dozen stubborn bits of bindweed and ground elder that keeping poking up but one by one they are being eradicated. Keep at it because the hard work is well worth it when you pick your first perfectly formed calabrese head.
Cant wait to finally plant & then eventually pick!
Dont spread manure on top of the membrane, it will pin the fabric to the ground over an area and couch grass will 100% grow through the fabric and into the manure. The pallet and chopped wood you have put to hold the fabric down, you will most likely get a few weeds grow around the edges of that, but they will pull out easily enough. It will take time for the weeds underneath to die off, but it's the right way to go. Well done on the progress so far :)
Thank you!
This is exactly what we have planned for ours
Take the complete top of the liquid container, but when pouring it make sure the thin side is flat and not upright and pour, the air will enter the top part and the fluid will come out the bottom without gulping. So as you held it upright so just turn it 90 degrees when pouring. Hope you know what I mean.
congratulations on your second baby girl.
mercy me that was a lot of work over two days, bravo.

Thanks for joining me on the journey!
If you're worried about cancer, then I definitely wouldn't be sticking Vaseline in your nose. Sure, it might stop pollen getting into your lungs, but on flipside you're allowing petroleum jelly to seep in instead.... literally a byproduct of carcinogenic oil distillation processing. Whilst their is little direct proof of Vaseline causing cancer, its highly likely to cause pneumonia☹- Think about it, if it stops moisture and foreign objects getting in, then it will also stop the natural processes of getting moisture from the air out of your lungs. At the end of the day, it is made from known cancer creating substance, so why take the risk... Consider natural alternatives if possible 😊
The use of clickbait and scripted 'pallet drama' was a little unnecessary but as somebody who's also recently got an allotment I'll be sticking around. Stay genuine and true to you and you'll find your crowd without needing to drive views.
You don't need a compost bin or even a compost heap - look up no dig and also chop-and-drop for methods closer to nature. Yes you maybe see more slugs but then the same methods attract more hedgehogs and frogs which eat the slugs.
Best of luck mate. So good to see you
Thanks dude
17:27 This angle here make it look like your on a green screen, It's very odd. You look so out of proportion to the fence. Like your extra tall. It's funny looking. 🤣
Haha so true! I can’t unsee it now!
Welcome to the rather odd world of allotment gardening. See all those weeds? They're FOOD for next year's crops. Join four pallets together, line with two layers of cardboard boxes & stuff EVERYTHING in, seeds & all. In 8-10 months, you'll have compost. Chainsaw oil is NOT 2 stroke oil! It's for lubricating the chain!
The bin needs no floor. No floor means easy access for the creatures who willl turn the waste into compost.
shame they have stopped talking to you after covid which is out of your control xd
