Today’s UC Irvine Stem Cell Research Center is a dynamic center encompassing a diverse array of interdisciplinary investigators that span the schools of Medicine, Biological Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Engineering, Arts and Law. Our state-of-the-art, LEED Platinum certified research and clinical building houses 23 of our 50 center faculty members.
Center faculty have obtained more than $170 million dollars in grant and foundation funds. Our research programs include an National Institutes of Health (NIH)-sponsored T32 training grant, state of the art shared equipment, research services programs and a seminar series.

Facts!
The topic of hair loss has been on my mind for a long time and I have always wondered why research doesn't focus on the deeper follicle molecular biology by comparing the hairfollicles/scalp of a person with Norwood 0 without hair loss and that of a person with Norwood 7 and research which molecules became depleted or no longer produced in one scalp but which are present in large numbers in the other. This takes time, but it would have to be possible to determine exactly which molecules induce hair growth that do not in people with hair loss happen more, which would bring us a lot closer to solving alopecia
There is a vast literature on the biochemistry of hair follicles, and we have understood the difference between NW0 and NW7 follicles for decades. Namely, that hair susceptible to pattern loss has a greater number of androgen receptors. DHT activates the androgen receptors which causes miniaturisation and eventually total loss - which is why DHT blockers like finasteride or dutasteride prevent further loss. The problem is really how to regenerate follicles once they have become miniaturized (or otherwise lost).
