How To Stratify Lavender Seed For Better Germination
Переглядів 24 тис.2 роки тому
Raw Lavender seed requires "stratification" for proper germination. Failure to do this will result in either very poor or zero germination. Many blame the seed supplier for poor germination as they do not understand the requirements to germinate this seed. Please note that this stratification process does NOT apply to Apex-Primed seed.

Great video! Can I use this 12V pump sprayer with 20% horticultural vinegar?
Yes
Many thanks👍👍
How do you control Bermuda grass growing in the ice plant?
Such a great video! Haha plant police! 😂 I have a fire spinner. Did not know that info! I love ice plants. Now I know not to over fertilize it.
Those babies look amazing! I'm so keen to succeed with these fab plants
I really enjoyed this information! I'm hoping to have better germination rate in my home nursery and garden.
I love your background music here.
I was surprised and you shoving the roots in tbh. But you obviously know what you are doing, so maybe I am just overly delicate haha.
Thanks for the information!
background noise is so annoying
Will pruning make more flower blooms?
That is dome loud background noise!! Can’t watch the whole video
Hello. Thanks for this video. I bought a flat of ice plant delosperma. As I'm planting it, the plants are very leggy. Should I prune them back and if so, can i grow the cuttings? Thanks
Yes, you can cut back and those you cut off will root if conditions are warm and not too wet.
@@moonshinedesignsnursery3310 Thanks for your reply. I cut off a few to see if they would root.
Did they?
Thanks for the tip on shearing. I have some lavender plants I grew from cuttings and they are right about 3 inches tall right now. I would never have thought to shear them, but it makes perfect sense that you should!
We do this on a regular basis. Makes for a well branched plant with more blooms the following year.
Clears it up exactly thank you, now all we have to do is convince wholsellers to sell plugs and liners to the general public which they rarely do except for annuals and veg. Plugs and liner plants I feel establish themselves better and planting requires minimal disturbance to the soil and surroundings. I would rather get a plug or liner than a fully finished flowering plant in a gallon or quart pot also simply because producers mess around with growth hormones to produce a sturdy bushy plant that is not too high and full of of flowers. These hormones take forever to grow out and mostly retard establishment in your soil completely so the plants die or die soon after the flowers are finished. That's just a waste of money. Serious gardeners want plants to thrive not use them as throw away fillers that last three weeks. Just wish i could buy Salvia plugs because I'm so sick of finished plants covered in flowers dying in a few weeks after the flowers do.
Great video. Thank you:)
Do you sell to butterfly farden? I need annuals some perrineals and a flat of lavender. Is this something you would be willing to do? Thanks Marilyn
Do you sell lavender plugs if not do you know who does? Do.
Yes. moonshinedesignsnursery.com/
Best lavender info. Thank you!
Hey Rodgers - do you ever have to deal with removing sooty mold from your green house plastic? If so do you do the same process?
Answering from my other channel, but yes, same procedure. Rare that we get that, but it has happened before.
I’m hesitant to stratify in soil in a bag. It seems like it would be a nightmare to separate out the seeds to transfer into cells afterwards. Is it not as bad as I’m imagining? Is there a trick to it? If so could you show how?
Thank you ❤
Will cuttings work?
Do you have any lavender that will thrive on the Gulf coast? Will those varieties survive in a humid environment? I'm in zone 9 in Texas.
I always just wonder how lavender grows in nature.. why do we always have to pop our lavender seeds in the fridge first. 🤔
Great! Thank you! I’m looking forward to trying to grow several varieties of lavender this winter and spring. I found your video refreshing because you’re not located on the West Coast or Deep South. You understand the challenges of Midwest growing!
do u sell giant miscanithus grass on line??? can't find anyone here in Amarillo, tx.
Thanks for this video. I'm an amateur flower farmer and was trying to figure this out lol
Awesome presentation!
Does this plant attract 🦋pollinators🐝? I like plants that bring pollinators for sightseeing.
Yes. Bees like it.
Thanks - really helpful!
Having alot of trouble getting the seeds to start. And when they do start, they seem to just flop over and die... not even just Iceplant, but just about every plant I've tried to grow (from seed)
That is called "Damp-off" and is caused by a fungus. Keep surface well ventilated and not too wet and/or use a fungicide such as Banrot drench.
Excellent 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧
Thank you so much for posting this video. I was about to buy trays and you just saved me from disaster.
Do you have any other recommendations for medias? Peat moss, sand, soil etc?
Redi-earth, Jiffy Mix, Sungro Propagation mix. Do NOT use soil.
I germinated my seeds straight from HD, on plastic container with moist Sphagnum Moss on heat mat at 82degrees, about 70 to 80% germination rate.
How can I order from your nursery
moonshinedesignsnursery.com/
I bought one of those herb kits at Home Depot and it never came up. Luckily I dug in the seed start and I found 2 sprouts. Out of the many seed I planted. I’m going to try to grow these sprouts with your instruction. Thank you!
Very helpful thanks!
Thank you so much for this video!!!!

At what stage do you begin fertilizing. ?
7 days after emergence. We have a fertilizer injector and run a constant feed at low dose.
Sowed my lavender and rosemary two weeks ago and nothing, should I stick them in the fridge for a few weeks? All my other plants sprouted
When you direct sow in the flats, do you have soil first on the bottom and then seed and vermiculite on top? Or are you using only vermiculite for both bottom and on top? Hope you can make a video how you direct sow when you have time! 😃
Very light coat of fine vermiculite on top for moisture control
Rodger, i have never grown anything in my life and have got English lavender seeds and want to plant in my garden borders, i live in the northeast brazil now with sand garden borders, do i need to put some organic soil ? any other tips
The addition of organic matter is always useful, just be cautious not to make the area where is would remain soggy as Lavender does not like wet feet.
Did they sprout?
Yes, or course. Not the way we generally start Lavender as we direct seed with a seeder into 288 and 512 cell flats, then stratify in the flats, normally.
@@moonshinedesignsnursery3310 gotcha thank you so much for letting me know 💚
@@moonshinedesignsnursery3310 once you put the seeds in the 288 cell to stratify, can I put it in fridge covered with plastic? So I need to check on water during the 6 weeks of stratification?
@@anishsheth3316 Yes, the entire flat can be refrigerated if you have the room. Keep any ete on it so it does not dry out.
After you dump the seeds in the baggie with soil, how do you find them again in 4 weeks to put them in the flats?
Thank you!
