Hello,
I still marvel at the wonders of [digital] technology. It is amazing how much we can achieve nowadays, using our own photos and videos and the basic editing software that comes with our phone, tablet or computer.
''Telling" the stories of 'The Wind in the Willows', during lockdown 2020, was a fun and absorbing learning curve.
My favourite set-up proved to be stop-motion or composite animation, using natural backgrounds of local scenery.
I am passionate about wildlife and wish we were part of it rather than dominating it. I also love how it is portrayed in some of our classic stories. As a scientist, at heart and by training, I search for the truth - aiming to inform, accurately, through 'Wildlife' Wow Moments' and to follow, faithfully, the original story-line of Classic stories.
My hope is for us all to appreciate and explore our local surroundings (and maybe some Classic stories too) and draw comfort from the wildlife we find there.
Let us celebrate wildlife.

Ratty's view on Lock's Hill - summary
A 3.5 acre, very steep (1 in 3 slope) green field hillside, dug away to accommodate 32 houses - none of them likely to be affordable by local people. Is this madness?
Ratty and his friends despair at the destruction of their green field home - started in May 2021. For 20 months, a housing developer has been removing the hillside. They have felled trees, 'coppiced' an entire boundary hedge, applied to fell protected Ash trees, cut through other hedges and created cliffs up to nearly 30 m high. It is, certainly, no place for wildlife anymore.
Work carried on and after more than 2 years of digging, houses finally started to be built in July 2023. Planning permission was lost and the development is now under appeal to regain planning permission and to build larger houses - presumable to increase the value of the development.
The development here is at Lock’s Hill, but it could be anywhere.
The very steep (1in 3 gradient) green field site, apparently requires the energy intensive removal of the hillside, and promises only 4 affordable homes out of 32 houses - and even these are unlikely to be truly affordable.
Planning permission was refused by the Town and District Councils, in 2017, but allowed at appeal by a single Planning Inspector, representing the Secretary of State. She was empowered to overturn local wisdom. Is this democratic? Did she consider the gradient of the site?
Clearly too steep for a housing estate, and not producing the type of houses the town needs, the only winners are the developers. Lock’s Hill deserves to be a test case, so that such a folly can not be repeated elsewhere.

Wildlife is good for us all and lifts our spirits.

Ratty and his friends are superimposed on photos of the lovely Lock’s Hill that is, sadly, now a very deep quarry.
The editing software comes as standard with PCs, laptops and tablets and there are apps to do the same. This is great fun to do, and the learning process and ‘wow’ moments never stop.
A huge thank you to Paul Beech for letting me use his aerial video.
The other photos and videos were mostly taken by me, with 5 of the animals obtained from creativecommons.org:
‘A couple of barn swallows’ by Arend Vermazeren; ‘barn swallow touch down’ by Katsura Miyamoto, Chaffinch and Gold Crest, public domain and bat outlines from BioDivLibrary.
The ‘actors’: Ratty (the water vole), Badger, Mole and Toad - were created for a promotion by Typhoo Tea Ltd in the mid 1990s, and I am grateful to be allowed to use them. The figures have C.U.K.T.V embossed on the back but I have been unable to locate this company.
Otter, lives in Buckfastleigh but Otters truly walk through my garden, 60m from Lock’s Hill.
The Greater and Lesser Horseshoe bats have used my very ancient stone building for many years, to forage and to roost between winter and summer roosts. Other bats, including Long-Eared, also fly in and out.
The hedgehog is coming under a nearby fence.- all observed with my motion activated cameras.

These stars solved an age old problem of spring tides swamping their eggs and coped with the salt water of a ria, to hatch 15 cygnets, and raised 12, over 2 years in 2020 and 2021. A well-presented, moving story - thank you V. Tron!. My great great grandfather Captain John White was Thomas White's brother. John (1801-1872). John regularly sailed to and from Labrador, Canada on behalf of the Moravian missionaries.

I love walking the foreshore at this time of year to spot the waders. And the call of the curlew is utterly fantastic.

This is such a wonderful illustration of what has happened at Lock's Hill. The water in the pool is sparkling no more and when we recently went there with the dogs, we saw it had become muddy which it never was before. This development should never have been allowed and it has already ruined the area which is so sad.
