I preferred the Super Tourers back then and went to this race. I must admit the V8's were more of a spectacle trackside but this race had some great variety and some big names. I managed to snag Murray Walker's autograph and asked him who he thought would win, he correctly speculated the BMW's would be victorious.

Excuses excuses Alan jones! Poor driving ruining that lovely Laguna!! Alain and Jason would have won no problem if it wasn’t for the useless Renault mechanics being feckless!

I was Hillsy's race engineer. No money, but we had a car we could work with. Qualified 10th, finished 6th. I don't think I breathed the whole way through that qualy lap. Longest day of my life! Great memories!

Good memories. I was there with my brand new champagne silver Opel Astra 160iE (with 200iE rims) and when I was leaving I was getting cheers and thumbs up like I was a winner.

1997 was the first year that Australian Touring Car racing split with two separate competitions-V8 Supercars & the ASTCC. And this Bathurst 1000 race of 1997, which was televised by Channel 7, was the 1997 AMP Super Touring Bathurst 1000 The Great Race, once again hosted by Sandy Roberts. This time they have a guest race commentator from the UK, the late great Murray Walker-RIP Murray Walker (1923-2021).

What engine was that Camry running? Exhaust on the firewall side which none of the 4 cylinder factory engines had like the 3S/5S, I couldn't quite see.

Can anyone tell me why there was no Brock, Seton, Johnson, Perkins etc this year? Seems a mystery. I'd really appreciate it. 👍

Always thought it was super weird seeing touring cars at Bathurst. I'm British, but nothing beats supercars at Bathurst. RIP Murray :(

The Renault mechanics made a hash of that pit stop changing the brake pads, embarrassing. Cant blame Alain for making the mistake trying to make up all the lost time. Easily would have won if it wasn’t for that pit stop.

This was the best stage I've ever been to. So much fun to watch! Possum bourne would flog it over that drop and practically clear the whole thing.

You're a star for putting these up. :) I attended every event at Kyalami and Zwartkops that year, just to see these cars. This series will always have a special place in my heart.

For me this is perfect. Super Tourers, Mount Panorama, Murray Walker in the commentary box... Just a shame the Aussies gave it the thumbs down. I know the big thundering V8's sound awesome compared to the tinny 4 bangers, but the racing was great and the driver line up was impressive. Wish they'd given it a fair shot. On another note, those green and gold Peugeots looked amazing. Always liked those 406's.
