Rough terrain can be levelled quickly using a laser level and a small skid steer. An excavator is also useful, but not necessary as I will show you in this short video.
If you have never used a laser level, this is a quick intro to a tool that can save you lots of time if levelling land is something you will do regularly.

Thanks for the vid. I have just been plagued by ice dams. I was surprised to see another proud homeowner of a split level in Montreal's West Island (the Pointe Claire weather report). I have installed the vents you showed, have Ice Shield under the shingles for 6' on the edges, 12 inches of insulation, I ensured the air got in through the eaves. We get ice dams high up on the roof, on the valleys between the upper and lower roof. I don't see icicles on the edge. You mentioned the valleys in the video. I think my options are to take cans of spray foam and caulking up into the attic and seal the buggery out of any cracks (make sure my pants are on tight).

If the economy and skyrocketing asset and real estate prices was artificially created by the Federal government deficit spending and Bank of Canada printing money out of thin air, exceeding their loan limits by 300% which artificially forced interest rates lower, and a massive increase in immigration numbers (500,000 per year evey year), than, the cure is the reverse. Spending cuts, higher interest rates above the rigged understated CPI and cuts to immigration numbers.

Assuming I agree with you, do you agree that this strategy will force a recession. I say this based on the following: 1. mortgage defaults will prompt banks to restrict credit = less demand; 2. lower demand will cause job losses in construction and real-estate and reduce GDP = less demand; 3. lower immigration will reduce demand. Taken together this seems to be a recipe for a significant correction as opposed to the soft landing the BOC are promoting.

I am basically living in the attic! No soffits either! Just the way the house was built. I do have good insulation in the front of the house with ventilation just the second story has issues. Ice dams can be avoided with 1.) proper levels of insulation on the attic floor to include the areas over the exterior wall top plates, 2.) effective free-flow ventilation of the attic space from the soffit vents to the ridge vent (or roof vents), and 3.) air sealing of all the attic by-passes to prevent warm house air from entering the attic space. All three of these measures, properly installed, work in unison to help to keep the temperature of the underside of the roof deck below 32 degrees F. to prevent snow from melting and gravitating down the roof slope and re-freezing at the eave's edge. It's a bit tricky to get it done right especially with low sloped roofs. The biggest challenge is effective air sealing out at the perimeter of the eaves where the joints of the exterior wall plates meet the ceiling drywall. Spray foam works best for this situation. What I've described above treats the root causes of ice dams, not simply applying "fixes" to treating the symptoms of ice dams (i.e. heat tape).

No need to walk on the roof either that only makes sense if your roof is Flat and well built of course---
