Recreational angling in the Pacific Northwest. We enjoy fishing of all types but primarily focus on freshwater trolling for trout Kokanee or other landlocked salmon. Based in the puget sound we would like to share information about the lakes we fish and what things may make your next trip more successful. Please let us know what you think or what you’d like to see. As we get some time we’re hoping to bring you some other lakes. Tips and Tricks for Summer Trout Trolling on a Kayak
I got reservations for August at this lake. Looks nice.
Cool video. Nice work. Nice rainbows. See any Kokanee?
Do you have a depth finder to confirm your baits are indeed at the same depth?
Awesome fish and great series! Don’t mean to be a Karen but You really don’t want to lip em or hold them gills unless you plan to keep them !
The weight hangs on the line and the line is placed in the spring on the end of the weight at whatever distance you want it to run ahead of your gear. Once a fish takes your lure, the line pops out of the spring and the weight runs down to the first piece of terminal gear. So no you do not have to remove it when reeling in. It runs down the line on its own. We will shoot a short on the weight and the rigging this week and show you how it works.
So you don't have to take the slide weight off before reeling the fish all the way in the boat ? Sorry newbie here
No because when a fish hits, its meant to pull loose from the loop portion of the weight and start sliding down to your flasher or dodger. Gonna buy a few of these and try em out this spring for kayak fishing
I figured u be catching cutthroat too
Yes mostly cutthroat actually. We also pick up kokanee and salmon from time to time
Ay yall in my home lake...looking good. Great video
That's awesome. I was watching your crappie video, thought I might want to give that a try. If you ever want to go out and hit a lake on kayak, let me know.
@gigharborfishinclub989 I have Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off so any of those days I am down. Would love to fish with ya
Ok cant make that happen this week, but what do you have over the next couple of weeks?
@@gigharborfishinclub989 I'm pretty much open atm
Do Fridays work for you?
Thank you with all the great information!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I LOVE CAL!!!!
The Maglip is a killer plug!
Nice looking Trout Cal!
Wow! I subscribed.
That first fish was huge!!!
Absolutely beautiful trout there! And Cal is the best color man in the business!
Thank you for showing us all your fishing adventures. Do they get any bigger there?
I fished Coldwater Lake near Mt. St. Helens a couple of weeks ago and the bubblegum pink trout trix worms were the hot ticket there!
That's awesome, when they hit, they really hit.
Looks like another great day of fishing despite the rain!!
We had a great time, even though it was wet!
I troll with flies behind the boat ...80 to 140
Flies can be a very effective presentation, especially towards the end of fall into the winter!
Fish on! Why did I not catch one like that on Crescent?
Appreciate the video. Couple of questions: How fast were you trolling? Were you using any scent?
Any colors working better than others?
@@genevievewagenblast orange has been a go too color for us at lake Roosevelt the past few years. That being said, the majority of fish were picked up on only two presentations. The first, a metal head trolling fly in a black zonker! Pattern with streaks of red Mylar in the body. The whole fly is 2 inches or so. The other was a jointed glassrap trolling plug in a gold and brown gloss finish. Similar to a jointed shad rap I just think the finish is a little more glossy and iridescent. Running the both on a hybrid lead core two colors with an ounce of inline trolling weight between the line and 40” flourocarbon leader. 2.2 mph SOG
@@genevievewagenblast tried to stay around 2.2. We caught between 2-2.5. No scent on the flies or plugs. Soft plastics sometime get scent and in the early summer I like sweet corn transitioning to anise or garlic as the summer goes on. Be aware of the regs that if using natural baits OR scents fish are supposed to be retained if legal to do so so it limits catch and release opportunities if that’s your thing.
we were trolling 1.8 to 2.3, we were not using scent. Dark colors seemed to work the best, black and cop car spoons and flies
@@gigharborfishinclub989 Appreciate this very much! I have fished that spot for a while. Orange has always been my go to color there, but like you said it hasn't been as good for whatever reason this year. I usually catch on my downrigger 8-12' and 100+ feet back. I haven't had much luck with either presentation you used, so I was very interested in your approach! Thank you for sharing.
I’m going there tomorrow on a kayak any tips
@@The_beg_jr it’s a derby lake and there are still tagged fish in the lake that get you a small gift certificate from wdfw. The public ramp is on the sw side of the lake and we haven’t fished much in the south end as it’s pretty shallow and we like to troll. The north end gets to about 25 feet and fishing can be excellent. I’ve done best trolling small plugs like kwikfish and mag lips and thin profile spoons like needlefish or trigger spoons from FishHuntShoot.com. Water temp should be consistent top to bottom since it’s shallow so the fish will likely be relating to structure more than depth. That being said 15ft or so is a good place to start if you’re gonna troll a bit. There was some osprey and otter pressure last year so that may keep them off the surface unless there’s a breeze and a chop. We haven’t fished it this year so I’m interested to hear how you do. It’s a great small lake fishery with fish into the several pounds on a good day. Let us know how you do!
@@gigharborfishinclub989 thank you
As a note, on this trip the lake was about 10 ft from full pool. In the next video 2 weeks later it’s only a couple feet from full and it makes a difference in the fishing when the water changes that much in. Suck a short time. Lake Roosevelt is managed as a hydro power resource and lake levels are close to full approaching the forth. Google the lake level on any man made reservoir and take note of how it impacts the fishing
That Zonker fly has a metal head and a little bit of red Mylar in it. I’ve got a few of them and I get the at the Gig Harbor Fly Shop. It’s a common pattern but I like to support the local guys.
Don’t forget 75% of the fish that your fishing buddies lose are the next state record!
Gotta love the hot and fast action days!
Your videos are awesome.
Glad you like them!
Are you using any dodgers or trolls in front of the fly? What about action dics? Do you use them to give the fly any action?
We usually start out with no flashers or dodgers. We only add one if we don't hook up trolling the presentation naked. Wiggle discs impart action to the fly or soft plastics. You can get them from Amazon. Here is a link: www.amazon.com/Wigglefin-Tackle-Action-Discs-Size/dp/B01N75NEB3/ref=asc_df_B01N75NEB3/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=693769151237&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4417362168617762835&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9033430&hvtargid=pla-1637899066318&psc=1&mcid=df714bc2d87f33a4984d56a087050a3b&gad_source=1
That’s what I get for talking too much. Pete caught most of the fish
any good bank fishing out there? nice trout BTW
We did see people fishing off the bank, not sure what their level of success was, but access can be hard. There were people fishing off the beach across from Two Rivers Marina and we did catch fish in that area.
Thank you for sharing. Didn't know there was kokes in that lake.
Excellent - especially for that cold time of year.
Pete had to pretty much run the whole show while I made callouts for a situation at work!
stock after 1 day or 2 day fish are gone.................
No they aren’t🤣 was out there Friday with my buddy got 2 jumbos off the bridge then yesterday in my raft ended up hooking 4 landed 3 jumbos
Very nice
Is there a launch?
The launch is part of Edgewater Park in Lakewood.
Thanks @@gigharborfishinclub989
There is a concrete launch, its a little steep but manageable with my 19 foot North River
Hi, are you guys going to fish Halibut April 4 ?
Not sure yet. We are definitely going to try and fins a time to hit the ling cod and sea bass.
Where did you guys park after you launched? .... if I remember right there's no parking nearby
If you get there early enough there is street parking up from the ramp. If not, there is street parking in and around the launch, but there would be some walking involved.
We seem to do better over the deeper water as well
The area down by the condos
What part of the lake seems to be best?
The area down by the condos, and the area in front of the VA tend to be the best for us.
Bloody tuna garlic is a game changer in any lake
I used to fish that back before it was fly only. Got so much better after the selective gear restrictions
Them take downs are awesome. Killer day
How long did you have your leader for your hoochie?
As you can see we were catching fish but all fairly small. First time fishing it and one outing does not a trend make so I’m excited to give it another go when the water warms a few degrees. To be fair, we were both fishing fairly shallow which is what the temp would indicate to me but I suspect a bit more diversity in depths would have benefitted my catches that day. Still getting used to the kayak so I’m not as apt to change up or try as many things due to my comfort level with it. If I went again tomorrow I would try a weighted presentation down the center channel a little deeper with a spoon or spinner. Of course conditions and temp will dictate where they are. I saw quite a few good marks 15-20 and I can’t wait to get down there again. If you’ve fished it and found success, leave us a comment. Absolutely gorgeous piece of water.
I wonder if fishing raw shrimp would work.. was out there yesterday had a couplenhits ony bass lure trolling around. They were not very active tho. But then again it was a high pressure day
I have never tried shrimp at American lake but they’re money sometimes at other lakes. If you find success with them let me know and I’ll try them next time I get out there and see what I can pull.
@@gigharborfishinclub989 I'm gonna try fishing with them next month. Figured it would be warmer by then and the water temps should have rose by then
Yeah temps are still hovering in 40s but with a bit of a warmup I’m hoping to get into the 50s soon. If you get out there let us know how the shrimp work!
@@gigharborfishinclub989 I'll deff let you know. I know down south like Arkansas and Georgia and Alabama shrimp works fairly well esp for grass carp and perch and alligator gar etc. I just wish we were able to fish with minnows up here.
@@anthonyonthegold I hear ya. Grew up fishing in SC
Three triggers three fish!
It really should, between the stocking and the rising water temps.
i hope when they stock by the end of the month the fishing will pick up
Yeah it’s been slow. We don’t hit that lake a lot but the fish we caught on Saturday were all decent. We don’t fish it just after stocking simply because the pressure is up and fish tend to be small. It’s a fun fishery most of the year but tough in the winter. Frankly surprised the trolled fly bite isn’t better out there right now.
chartreuse is a good color for me on that lake usually behind a dodger
Chartreuse was always a go to color for me but I’ve been tending toward pink and orange more the last year or so. Like all color and lure selections it can be a self fulfilling prophecy. I’m catching more on pink right now. Why? I fish it more often😂. Logs seem to indicate to me that all three colors work just about as well most of the time when a brighter presentation is indicated so we all tend to fish our preferences. For me it’s more about light vs dark of muted vs bright and flashy. That being said, as you know there are days or fisheries where specific colors are what they want and all they’ll hit. When you find that spot you stick with what’s working. Keeping a fishing log gives us data points to develop strategies and prove our gut feelings. Thanks for the intel on your luck with chartreuse in Sammamish. Time to break out of my pink streak!
