Why Did We Forget State of Decay
The last video popped off a little too hard, so I ripped the naming convention. I won't be making a series out of this, it just worked really well for the topic.
I appreciate the support from all of my friends and family on this video essayist endeavor. Unlimited Serotonin.
Addendum:
After reading a singular comment, Horses would also be a much more interesting idea than bikes. I am a fool
Music Used:
Civilization Falls - SoD
Flesh Eating Zombies - SoD
Horizon - Dying Light
New Residents of Trumbull Valley - SoD
Hope Prevails - SoD
Ride Along in Trumbull Valley - SoD
Trumbull Valley - SoD
Katz - Courage the Cowardly Dog

Why Did We Forget Void Bastards

A sloppy video essay. I wanna get back on saddle. Back in the fight. Mr Beast has gotta be shaking in his boots after I dropped this. Addendum: Roguelike vs. Roguelite: I kinda breezed past because I felt like it was a sort irrelevant semantic issue. Many games of the genre in recent years have been roguelites, but everyone refers to them as roguelikes. When someone refers to Hades as a rogueli...

Morrowind is the best Elder Scrolls game and I'm not sorry
I can see why it’s been forgotten, because the gameplay is not that… good. In my opinion though, the art style is nice.
Just have to hard disagree for the second game about vehicles, bikes are an awesome idea but it simply adds one more step to problem solving, like park it behind a wall and jump to for it by the time zeds are climbing, or throw a bomb while running and then floor it etc. I wish driving skill was much more improved upon in that case, the skill already exists in the game it just gives a stat boost to cars. Some survivors outright not being able to drive efficient enough to outrun ferals or manuever with extreme precision the moment you hit the brakes would be much more immersive, turning cars into wet tissue doesn't solve it for me either it feels completely artificial, I don't like the idea of getting vibes of "oh yeah im playing a game so bullshit is normal" I quite love being able to armor cars, it makes me feel moved up in the world, it feels *EARNED* And what happens when something didn't plan happens and you have no getaway? do we simply roll down and go yeah this is where it ends? That's simply frustrating and will make you detach from your survivors, Cars are being used for exactly what is should be used for. You can't simply discard a specific tool from a toolkit and call it complete. I wish the next game simply has much more to deal with that forces you to be on foot. Bigger buildings, better base building and sieges, actually useful AI and personality to make them part of your community. Truth is, game falls so short in every category. Enclaves are useless babysitting, Outposts don't even get a visual upgrade like some barbed wires or symbols to make you feel "Yeah, this place is our playground." We can't even put some people in them to get some backup if things go south. Customizing characters are non existent. Base building is barely there, and it's *extremely static* can't even add some minor decorations or defenses. It's not the vehicles man, the game is hard to connect and care for. Yet I have played it for 100 hours because gameplay can be amazing. It's just everything else is so shallow.
Time sure fly so fast.🥺
The original indie game that your reviewing hit in 2013. Not sure why you’re reviewing it in 2024 after state of decay 2 just had its final patch while they gear up for 3. Try your hand at lethal setting on 2 and review that if cars running over swaths of enemies and taking no damage is boring for you lol
Yeah bikes woud be cool like days gone, i think they also need to change how post traps work or make it optional to remove them for more dificulty
I never forgot this game. Its great. The graphics, and gameplay cycle are amazing. The dlc sucked though
It's a fantastic idea that runs out of steam by midgame and while you see the ending coming, it kills any desire to replay
i loved this game, i just couldn’t replay it after i was done, there was nothing left to do.
Beautiful video. I've always wondered why Void Bastards was overlooked. Everything about the game oozes passion. The soundtrack is great. The humor is well done. The art style, forget it. Love your channel, keep it up man, you have a great cadence in your voice. Sending love!
Played wild bastards by now, and as far as I can tell, it did a lot of things better than void bastards. For one, while ironman still isn't the default, it broke up the campaign into shorter "checkpoint" like sections, making the next major unlock never feeling too far away while making death not too punishing. Secondly, the planets are randomised. Not sure if the arenas are, but the resource strategy is, which is a plus for replayability. However, the game does loose its teeth a bit the more outlaws you unlock as it is quite possible to tonic brute force someone onto the last planet while loosing on every single one once you get past 8 - that is a whole backup team for the largest planet size.
Shit....I didn't forget
This game is so fun. So underrated. Cant wait for Wild Bastards.
Void is great, I'm missing to play this right now
The sequel just came out, so it hasn't been forgotten....
If you actually use a car in the quest where it says not to use a car allen has unique dialog
I think this game actually really works well at what it was going for, its just a really neich product. I know that sounds like a cop out but i only mean that I have a really good time with the story. It made me laugh because i should have expected such a cruel sytem to be that cruel. My first play through of thr campaign was purly about tryijg to keep a character alive for a long time and scrapiing to fill out the board of crafatables. So the post game isboerfect because it lets you modify that really tasty atomospheric gameplay and setting
I still play it 😂
I can't argue the repetition feeling behind it, but I can say that I keep coming to it from time to time, and it gives me joy! Very fun game, love the style, and the dark humour in it! Definitely going to get wild bastards as well.
I see a lot of people complaining about resources being too generous, but my first playthrough was on Hard Bastard and I always felt like being able to go guns blazing was a reward for carefully gathering and managing resources. By the time I reached the late game where resources were a lot more common, I felt that the game became a lot more demanding: There were enemies that really wanted you to have specific weapons (the out-patients and Zecs meant I couldn't just Stapler everything) and even if I had a wealth of resources, I still have to not take too much damage from some of the messed up situations this game can put you in. I haven't tried the easier difficulties, so part of me wonders if those were too forgiving. I suspect I'm one of the few maniacs out their who play games on the hardest difficulty for their first playthrough. Or maybe I was just crap at the game (or just enamored by the ship noises).
We didn't forget Void Bastards. Especially now that Wild Bastards came out. What we forgot and what is our collective species-defining sin is that we forgot *The Wonderful 101* . We will pay for it at the end days.
Can someone please tell me the game at 3:52
I could agree that perhaps many people forgot this game for the reasons mentioned here... but I absolutely love pretty much everything about this game and still play it all the time. The emergent gameplay here is absolutely top notch, the unlockable challenges are great, the use of liminal spaces and capturing that feeling of isolation in space... I feel like if this game had a storyline that was more grandiose, or with big bosses, it would lose something. I thought the ending was perfect, and what compelled me to play the game again and again was the ships, and the way that every single one gave me a different experience, even though they are hand drawn and not procedural, just based on my inventory, enemies aboard, hazards, security, etc. I've had more things happen in this game where I thought, holy shit let me snag that last 30 seconds of footy real quick. Anyway, great video though with valid points - I would totally recommend this game though myself. Super stoked on Wild Bastards - it's looking like the shooting is going to be a bit more important this go around, and it also seems the story probably has a bit more of a presence in the game.
Love this game !
I think I stopped because I did something smart that wasn't rewarded and then got killed by a turret that shouldn't have been able to hit me. I also think human-less settings can suffer from a lack of charm. Tower of Guns had bosses and a more traditional structure but like Void Bastards it felt a bit flat and lacked an emergent setting despite being really pretty.
"Shotgun is strong, but SUV is stronger" Now that's my new favorite quote
I remember when they first released Void bastards. Sweet Sweet Void Bastards. I ALWAYS HATED IT.
Real
Man I'd never heard of State of Decay to begin with.
I wish they would do away with rogue lites and just make rogue likes
I loved this game! I just wish that we got a bit more for the characters, maybe some different endings.
Mmmmno... I didnt forget.
Dunno,I certainly didn't forget it. I can't find any games to fill that State of decay 1 itch and I already have 700 hours in
Wowie new video lets go👍👍👍👍
State of decay sounds like a perfect zombie game on paper, then you play it and it's just boring and janky. Also funny how your solution is just making the game Days gone, maybe a video on that would be cool.
Weaker cars, less of them, and more specific repair mechanisms. Also less fuel or more sprawling maps.
first video ive seen by you, I love these games. the video is great
"Why Did I Forget State of Decay" would be a more appropriate title.
State of Decay 2 gave me one of my favorite moments in a game ever. I started with two of the "starter" characters, a guy who had a lot of stats in leadership skills and his college roommate who mostly came across as the fat comic relief type. Calling them Jason (leader) and Step (fat college roomie). Obviously I only mained Jason since he had the best starter skills I thought and it worked out really well. I eventually promoted Jason to be my group leader and settled new bases larger and larger as time went on, saving resources and getting new members to eventually get the largest base on the map. Finally after all this, I had enough resources to claim the largest base. For roleplay purposes, I decided to take Step with me when I went to claim the base. It felt like a victory lap, like these two college roomies actually made it this far at the end of the world. Then it happened... We had a horde come in. Then another. Then another. Then special zombies started piling in too. It was absolutely insane RNG I've never before or since had this many zeds so fast swarm my characters. Against all odds, I still managed to keep the numbers of zeds mostly at bay with Jason and Step providing backup. Then suddenly a feral leapt on Jason and downed him. I fought as hard i possibly could but it happened so fast. The other zeds swarmed and within seconds, Jason was dead. I had Step with me so the game switched me to him and I was fuckn distraught. I fought and fought and fought. I didn't think I'd make it but I actually managed to kill the remaining zeds and sadly... had to put down Jason, now zombified. Covered in blood and having just killed his best friend, I claimed the base as Step. The most bitter win I've ever had. Legit one of the most memorable moments I've had in a zombie game. State of Decay 2 was a great improvement on the first one, but still shallow overall. Even still, the little characteristics they gave to your survivors added a lot of personality, which is what I want out of a game like that. If State of Decay can keep deepening on the core characteristics, I think the next one will be a real hit. 10/10 I love these games forever.
What a great story, my man.
And yet, there's an armored car in the trailer.
Wouldn't it make more sense just to have vehicles run on gasoline? Fuel is already a resource in the game, but it's not used for anything but molotovs and explosives
But they do...?
The first game shines in Breakdown mode it mechanics and gameplay loop really start to take shape there
This could be resolved by playing on a harder difficulty
It really becomes a vastly different game on "lethal" difficulty.
When you put Big Boss on screen I genuinely thought that you were about to suggest horses. For me, I want them to make co-op a little more meaningful in addition to toning down vehicles. I want that sense of power, safety, and technological progression to be shifted onto your base camp instead. Making every trip back feel like a real reprieve, but you need to constantly go into a more dangerous world for upgrades, resources, and eventually a new place entirely.
@@alistairo314 Unironically, that could also do the trick. I hadn’t thought of that. Really just any kind of rebalancing on that would be great
Mainly because it was good but not great in aspects that the mainstream care about when they decide to buy a game.
The problem with state of decay 2 is the lack of character customization & launching a year early on Microsoft store instead of on Steam. Also there’s a lack of mod support which always leads to a shorter lifespan.
I forgot it because coop/mp is kinda buns…
So you're saying Days Gone is your perfect State of Decay game?
That game sucks
State of decay 2 is good I like it
I enter a state of decay every day I go without a new Pigeonal™️ post
Yes! I knew subscribing to you would be a good idea, my little medium-form gaming retrospective channel-that-could.
