Rediscover the magic of a bygone era aboard the historic Mary Valley Rattler.
The scenic Mary Valley is a place where you can experience the friendly laid back atmosphere of rural living at its best. The Rattler's 46km round trip starts at Gympie and after crossing over the Mary River, chugs its way rhythmically around an abundance of curves, across bridges and numerous gentle hills.
Your journey passes through Dagun, home to a beautiful heritage station before continuing to the quaint community of Amamoor nestled in the centre of the Mary Valley. You'll marvel at the restored turntable installed at the Amamoor Station and fascinated by the process required to turn the locomotive around for its return to Gympie.
Make sure you leave plenty of time to explore the restored historic Gympie Station which houses a heritage display, a gift shop and a cafe offering breakfast, brunch and lunch.

The vintage railmotor RM76 traditionally ran the Brooloo line to Gympie providing a daily link to the town for shopping, the transportation of goods and a means for children to get to school. Congratulations to all involved. Its fantastic to see this beautifully restored steam locomotive 967 return to the rails for thousand to enjoy. This important part of our national heritage will now live on for future generations to experience. In 1868 John Timbs wrote; - Steam power, it has been well observed, has opened on the world an era of progress, and is destined to continue a leading characteristic of it. On this planet, man is the noblest work of God, and the evolution of steam power is by far the noblest work of man. It is interesting to realise that more steam power is in use now in this millennium than in our history. Whether burning natural gas, coal, concentrating sunlight, or splitting atoms for nuclear power, most thermal power plants use the energy for the same thing: heating water into steam to drive a steam turbine. Steam-based generation still produces most of the world's electricity today.

Nobody in old Gympie High School uniform and wasn't the rattler actually a rail motor? My father was a railwayman in Gympie and I went to the GHS in Cootharaba Road.

Wow I remember going on a school trip years ago in primary when we went on the Mary valley and jeez was it a great time, mum said I wouldn't stop talking about it Haha. I'm 22 now and Was an awesome trip and one of the reasons I love the mechanical beasts today :), one day I hope to go on the old girl again would be great.
