Part 4 Lotus Elise Projects - Clam Tilt Operations
The last part of the BOE clam tilt installation kit. I apologize this took me a while to make the last video in this series. I have been busy and have enjoyed the car this summer.
overall i really like this modification and will benefit a lot of future maintenance and modification with easily opening access around the engine. in fact the next modification i have planned for the car will have its installation time cut by 2 hours! any guesses what this would be?

It has been a long time since the last update. Today i will be working on my 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. I did not get to drive it much this winter and unfortunately left E85 in it, upon getting the car ready for the spring the car would bog under any boost. I drained all the old E85 and got fresh fuel but unfortunately the problem still persist. so in this episode i will be changing out ...

@@THEGABNER here you go! www.onrailsengineering.com/lotus/2005-06-led-headlight-upgrade
Hey, I am just posting again after completing the video. Thanks so much for discussing all these details and little things you did or recommend. You mentioned several times a place where other people were discussing their clam kit installs, can I ask where that was? LotusTalk? Thank you.
Yes, lotus talk had so much information and even before i bought it i went on looking to read up on all the threads on there. For example; adding the strut to help with opening and closing was a set of instructions on a thread that someone made on there. Although i didn't copy their design i adapted mine pretty close. I will say i would like to add another strut on the other side as you can see from the video that having it on one side tends to push up on the right side and i kind of have to wiggle it to balance that. I wish you the best of luck in installing the clam kit and glad this series of video help you a little.
@@nedsgarage I got the clam off :)
@DAaaMan64 how's the progress going?
@@nedsgarage I think my last comment was sent to you for review. So if this comment makes no sense, lmk. Lol Also thanks for the help so far! I'm review your videos over and over lol I'm thinking one side is just a bit higher than the other and I need to keep looking for cables or something to clear out of the way.
@DAaaMan64 is it hight towards the back or the front of the clam? We're you able to get your metal shims all sorted out? I had 1 shims that stuck on to the clam underside when I removed it.
Wow you did it! Thank you for posting this!!
Do you have a rubbing issue when opening your trunk after installing the kit? I even shifted the washers and tried at least 4 times to adjust everything to give me more clearance to no avail, it's not much rubbing, but definitely a bit.
@madarauchiha1218 Hi thanks for watching and commenting. When I was installing it, the trunk lid toward the back was was rubbing and I had to back off the bolts and shove it forwards and tighten them down to get more clearance. However, after that I don't have any other rubbing issue. Although the gap may not be perfect around the engine lid (i don't think it was perfect to begin with before).
@@nedsgarage I had the biggest pain in the butt trying to re-install it with the clam up like they stated. I might loosen it with it down and try yanking on it a bit.
@@madarauchiha1218 i think i had the clam back down and pushed it towards the fire wall and sneaked a ratcheting wrench in there to tighten it, that's how i put some pressure forward.
Excellent video, thank you. Yours is much better than the other video on You Tube and made it an easy job. I put the adjustment screw in to the plastic boss and fitted the sombrero washer before fitting the new light unit to the headlight frame. It removed my anxiety about damaging the new lamp unit whilst attacking the sombrero washer. The only (minor) negative was having to advance the lamp adjustment screw through the new light unit whilst lining up the other two mounting screws. I’ve fitted LEDs to the daytime running lights, old full beam and in-bumper spot lights, as well as the number plate illuminators and interior lamp. I’ve also fitted LEDs to my turn signals and the repeaters on the wings. Since I have GRP LED rear lights which come with a new flasher relay, I don’t have a problem with fast flashing that would be present if LEDs are fitted to the turn signals without the new relay.
@jackandroid1006 thanks for watching and commenting. Did you have much trouble adjusting the beam after install? I really had a hard time and the end result was okay (lower than I want but acceptable). I also remember putting in the new flasher relay for led twilight and man that was a tough squeeze!
I had no problems adjusting the headlight beam back to approximately the same position as the original lights…then I tried to put the headlight cover back on! I had to fine tune the projector position by adjusting both upper and lower direction screws to try to make the upper rim of the projector protrude less (at first, I adjusted just the new direction screw, since the other screw hadn’t moved). So far, I’ve adjusted it only in my garage and I’ve not tested the results on the road, but I suspect mine is also a little low. Interestingly, the problem was only on the passenger side. I suspect it’s a result of the inboard side of the projector protruding further forwards to direct the light towards the kerb. There must be more tolerance on the outboard side of the headlight cover, hence the driver’s side fitting ok. Or it’s simply a function of the car being made by Norfolk turnip farmers😁 As for the relay, my neck hasn’t recovered yet! I ended up using my phone selfie camera as a mirror and kneeling outside the car. In my car, the positions of the flasher relay and its neighbour were transposed, so I had extra fiddling and two relays to put back in place. As I said, “handmade”😁
Hey thanks again for the video. I love the thoughtful explanation of the mods you've done to the process. I had another question. I was planning to skip battery relocation and I've already completed the rear panel replacement. Not including time to remove clam, how long would you say it would take an amateur? Sorry.
@DAaaMan64 thanks for watching and I'm glad it was helpful. If I had to sit take a day off and just get through this all in one go i bet I can do it in 8 hours (with help removing clam on and off). Maybe take an hour off for removing the clam. I ended up taking a couple weeks doing an hour or 2 a night and waiting on parts and taking my time. Good luck on your install!
@@nedsgarage thank you so much. The parts have been on my shelf for like 2 years now haha. I think this winter is the one!
Thanks the video!! Did you ever post the part 4? Just want to see you open and close the clam. Thank you
@DAaaMan64 i have taken some footage but didn't like how it turned out so been delaying. Thanks for watching and commenting. I will put a priority to making that video. Give me a couple days.
@@nedsgarage no worries man. Thanks a lot I would enjoy it
Doing the install for the clam hinge as we speak. I honestly thought it'd be a pretty easy job. Boy was I wrong. I am mainly doing it solo and I'm around 10 hours in or so. Finally rerouted the battery lines and such. Much bigger of a project than I could've ever anticipated.
This is all good info, but at least on ky Elise, the headlight cover bezels push against the projectors so in order to make small adjustments it involves the nightmare of taking everything apart each time. Once i had the ORE headlights in, i just measured about a quarter inch under the centerline of the protector housing (for my car it was 23") at 10ft distance. Turned out as close to perfect as it'll ever get. The cover bezels pushed the lights down about 2 inches on both sides, so I had to start with about 25.25 inches cutoff height before putting on the headlight covers. (Edit: got the end of your video and saw you encountered the same thing)
@Dethred1 thanks for commenting. I'm glad I'm not the only one who ran into this issue. I was getting pretty frustrated doing all the measurements and then just throwing it all away as I bolt the cover on. I hope you like your led it it has been great for me
@@nedsgarage Same for me, although I was hoping I was somehow the only one. I have a custom carbon clam so the headlight covers fit even less, but after about 5 hours of trying I was able to get everything to align and bolt in properly. I couldn't even drive with the stock lights, your video convinced me to buy the ORE ones and wow it's like a modern car now. Stock are so dangerous, it's like they were designed as a last resort if you were caught having to drive the car at night for some strange reason.
For installing that little slotted washer, i just used a 12mm socket and my thumb and it pressed back into place smoothly.
Excellent content, keep up the good work.
Hey. Thank you for watching and commenting!
This channel is gold, please continue doing this great job. Cheers from Spain!
Hi there, thank you for the kind word and thanks for watching!
❤❤❤
THE SHIMS DO HAVE MEASUREMENTS,THEY DO HAVE THEM FOR A REASON.
Thanks for commenting. I did see a number written with a wax pen on them shims. I kept them all together. I ended up taking thickness measurements and had made some to replace them!
Nice install, any interest in selling your OEM unit?
On most of the fuel pump kits there is a rubber hose. What is that for ?
The hose in the installation kit is to connect the pump to the cars tubing side. This was not needed on my car as you can see here there was no tubing connection between the pump and fuel pump assembly. There were a couple hoses on the return side I could have replaced but I did not. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thanks for walking us through this. What did you end up doing for a jack solution?
Hi. Thanks for watching and commenting. I did a lot of measurements and the bridge jack they sell seems a bit too tall for my application. I end up running low profile aluminum floor jacks made by California car cover on the include jack tray with various pieces of wood and pucks and that has been working great.
keep up the good work!
What a process, oh my gosh.
Great video, my friend. Mine is in its way to me, and I hope to have it up next week. Thanks for the video👍
How long does the lift take to raise the car?
I don't lift it all the way up and it takes less than 30 seconds
What are the dimensions of your garage? Looks great man. Excellent way to maximize the space!
Great video! It clear shows the quality of Radium Engineering’s products. I think I will get these as well.
Really like your cars & garage. What’s is the height from floor to the bottom of lift with Evolution on the bottom & lotus up top?
Hey, thanks for comments and sorry i didn't get this notification and reply sooner. The height from floor to bottom of platform is 60" above the floor. My Lancer is lowered and generally the roof line is around 56" above the floor. However, the highest point on that car is the roof antenna and although i have a shorty roof antenna it would not fit with the 1 rung lower on the lift. The platform is 4" thick so the lotus Elise bottom of tire to floor is 64". The lotus Elise is a pretty short car (~42"-44"). With this lift i have 2 more locks to go up, but i am unable to go up higher than this as i will hit the ceiling (you need some room to get OFF the locks so i dare not push it higher). i have not tried to park the lancer up top and lotus below it but i hope of on the lower rungs will make it all work for that set up.
Thank you for an informative video. I can do mine now
Hello Ned, it is really clever to put the hvac into the glovebox, there is space not that useful 😁 I noticed you have some gauges, can you indicate how you wired them into the cabin ? Thanks for your videos well explained !
hello, thank you for watching. the gauge i have in there is a dual function oil pressure and oil temperature gauge. to wire them fed the signal lines up through the transmission/shifter tunnel and up to the front, i powered it by tapping into a key-on power source under the passanger side dash fuse panel. i also have a voltage meter/usb power source under it and a 12V cigarette lighter port under it as well!
@@nedsgarage I did the same installation for the the signal lines. Indeed, I can tap the battery + from the fuse on the passenger side but I can't understand where you took the ground and ignition switch +12v 🤔 Thanks !
Can you put the motor on any side? I have a two car garage and I need to put it towards the middle of the garage, so I can place the lift as closely as possible to the wall. Do you know if that would be possible?
Because the hydraulic cylinder is mounted on one side of the rails, one of the upright is specific to the motor/hydraulic mechanism. You have to either mount it where i have (far left) or flip the whole thing (right side up front near my lotus banner). I didn't have any outlets over there and i needed space to walk through so i chose the far left side. my choice would have been front left side if i had my pick. thank you for watching!
Did you say how tall the ceiling was, or I missed it?
about 9'-5" where it matters - my garage slopes a little towards the door. so i have a little less inside and a little more outside towards the door. The 9'-5" would be where the roof of the car would be. please let me know if you have any other questions!
I have hids but I have the ugly yellow bulb where bright lights are do you know what size I need I have 2005 elise
Should be a H7. I replaced mine with one off of Amazon to get the white light to match
@@nedsgarage do you know which one you bought?
This is the description from amazon the one i bought "AILEO H7 LED Headlight Bulb, 6pcs Upgraded Large CSP Chips, 350% Brightness 40W 8000LM Super Bright 6500K Cool White, 1:1 Mini Size Fanless Easy to Install H7 LED Bulb Replacement Kit, 2 Pack"
@@nedsgarage I bought those bulbs but it's still the ugly yellow color did not match the hid color
@wall1 Hi, did you get 6500K color? I have another video that showed mine matching pretty good.
if your garage has a attic area have a contractor come in and put in a tray ceiling over the hoist , dad had it done in his garage and it allowed for full lift and parking of larger cars under it, nice lotus
Thank you for watching and commenting. I do have an attic area and will be looking into that.
What clamps are you using to hold your quickjacks on the wall?
i just took a piece of steel bar and drilled some holes and then bend them into a J shape. then screwed it to the stud at the correct height to mount it on the wall. there is no load hanging off of it its sitting on the ground and the bracket just keeps it from tipping out.
I think this should be enough for what I need, cause I have a C6 Z06 and eventually saving for a Lotus Elise/Exige like yourself
Would you be able to do suspension work or transmission work with this lift? Bridge jack or whatever it's called?
@@AarenPho thank you for commenting. there are a couple ways to lift the car up on and take the wheel off. 1 - is use the included sliding jack platform and a bottle jack/scissor jack/jack stand combo. 2 - a bridge jack 3 - a quick jack on the 4 post lift rails, a quick jack doesn't work on the orange car due to the lifting points not being in line/parallel with each other. i don't have a bridge jack yet and get by using the sliding jack platform at the moment.
What type of head unit are you using?
It's an android radio "joying" is the brand and this is the 8.8" version of it. It is sold on Amazon.com or eBay. If I had to do it again, I would buy the smaller 6.2" version. As it fits better and has a volume knob. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hey Ned nice video. I remember you're doing this for fun, if you want any feedback let me know. EZ
Hey, thanks for watching! Yes, any feedback is very welcomed!!
My elise winter projects are only rinseless washing it while in the garage. I feel like a slacker now.
Making these videos have been a motivation to get away from Call of Duty and spend some time in the garage! thanks for taking the time to comment.
Nice I just installed a triumph xlt lift. My garage is 30x60 with 10 foot ceilings but your idea of marking the max lift height for each vehicle was simple yet effective. I'll be doing that tomorrow. Nice Lotus. I did some work for them and visited their facility in England back around 2010 and was going to buy an Elise but ended up buying a Porsche Cayman S as it was a more comfortable daily driver than the Elise. Still love the Lotus though.
Thanks for leaving a comment! And I love Cayman S's. That is a nice daily driver for sure! I am looking at someway to make sure it doesn't go higher than that rung, maybe some kind of stop or welded bracket or a limit switch to make sure I don't accidently smash the car into the ceiling.
@@nedsgarage I'm thinking of making a hinge out of U bracket and mount to garage wall at the centerline of the lift a couple of inches below the ceiling. drill a hole through the end of a length of electrical conduit, pipe or something longer than the vehicles and mount to the U hinge. hang the other end of the pipe with a loop of wire so it is free to move up to flip a switch or ring a bell or something. When the car top raises it up it should give me an indication to stop.
Thank you so much for this video! Was in the market to put a lift in the garage WITH a Lotus Elise as well AND a 9.5' garage to boot. This answered a TON of my questions. THANK YOU!!
Glad you found this video helpful. You'll love having a 4 post! If you have any other questions please let me know I'll do my best to answer.
I have a WRX and Elise and a garage ceiling that is 5" too low :(
i have about 9'-5", can you lower the WRX?
@@nedsgarageOh, that answers my question
I am 100% jealous !!!!
i love it. so nice.
what is that little bubble on your side mirror? and how did you get a digital dashboard?
Hello. The bubble is just a stick on concave mirror to eliminate blind spots. You can get them from auto part stores. The digital dash is a lotus digital dash that they sell to retrofit for older elises. It's a plug and play unit that is sold by lotus. www.aimtechnologies.com/aim-mx-2e-lotus-plug-play-dash-logger-kit/
I JUST installed mine - will have to align them though! My old LED setup weighed 413 grams each, the ORE weighs 484 grams so a total weigh increase of 142 grams for both side (0.31 lbs.) For the difference in light output / quality PLUS the "solenoided" high-beam shutter it's well worth it IMHO. Your instructions were VERY helpful!
I'm glad it was helpful! Please let me know how you think it is at night. I'm curious as you had all the different set ups before this. I hope you are able to get your cover back on easily I had to tweak my frame a bit, but at the end all fit nicely!
@@nedsgarage I have the GRP carbon housings so I’ll just sand out the housing opening if there’s an issue with the passenger side. I have no issues with the driver side that I did today.
My favorite track! I've run hundreds of laps there!
I hope to go back and get some more seat time in 2023! I've had pretty bad luck in this particular car finding a different problem each time I go out.
Thanks for this - I just purchased this kit about 10 hours ago. Over the last 17 years I've had the stock halogens, then SilverStars, then HID's, a couple different LED bulbs and now this kit... hopefully this will be the last upgrade!
you are welcome! I am uploading the install video now please check that out later if you are interested. let me know how you like it when you do get it installed.
