Never Make a Critical Decision “Based” on Intuition
Intuition can be a valuable tool … but only if used in the right order.
During my presentation on Decision Making, I often ask:
“Who here would consider yourself to be a natural, intuitive decision-maker and problem-solver?” Anybody?
Invariably, not a single hand is raised.
I then ask, “Who here would like to be a natural, intuitive, decision-maker problem solver?”
This time, almost everyone raises their hand.
Here’s the thing: we are natural intuitive, decision-makers and problem-solvers, and in our modern world, that’s the problem.
We Mistake Feeling Right with Being Right
Intuition is so compelling when making decisions and solving problems because it causes us to feel right, and feeling right and being right are NOT related.

How I Ended Periodic Back Pain for Good!

I accepted lower back pain as a natural consequence of aging. I was wrong! The first “wrong” assumption I made was that since I do 30 plough-pose stretches nearly every day, I was sure I was doing everything possible to strengthen and condition my back. I still have a hard time believing this but using this knowledge has caused me to dramatically lose weight. When initially introduced this concept, via the kurzgesagt video on this topic, I was extraordinary skeptical, but after 2 months of daily exercise (without dieting) and very little weight loss, I was willing to test it out. I stopped working out and just observed my caloric intake, making dietary changes as needed. So far I’ve lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks.

    I was born into the Mormon faith. I was ever-fearful of hell (Mormons call it the Telestial Kingdom) and what if I am not pleasing to God. Now, as an atheist, I just simply accept life as it is with no (spiritual) worries. Why, I wondered, did God give Hell to people who committed suicide and then give me an illness which centers around suicide (manic-depression, a.k.a. bipolar disorder).

    The thing that's always pissed me off with religious people is just how dishonest they are about their beliefs. See, many of them will say that they're aware they don't actually know if god exists and that they merely believe he does, but whenever anyone asks them how the universe came into existence, they always without fail answer with "God created it", and not "I don't know". Because apparently making up an answer that even you admit you don't know is true is better than admitting that you don't know the answer.

      My perspective is similar to a religious claim but science proves god for me. The Big Bang is the genesis account, where all distinct things in the universe came from the same first cause. And it all came about through a completely ordered process, there can’t be random interactions all matter obeys physical laws. The only way random chance can happen in our universe is if there are things outside of the universe affecting things. I don’t believe there are. Either the laws of physics are absolute or not.

    Many Christians will appear waving their ticket to heaven. But the Bible warns: Matt 7: 21 "Not everyone who says to me 'Lord, Lord', will enter the kingdom of heaven but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven . . . and I shall say I never knew you." And the will of the father is to love one another. Meanwhile, so many professed Christians turn away from the threat of man-made climate change. And also ignored are the many millions who succumb every year from fossil fuel air pollution including from gas cars. What if good Christians get to the gates of heaven only to learn these things were real after all?

    The most "interesting" part of Christianity is how they handle the concept of Hell. That God is so pure, so good, so perfect that he cannot tolerate sin. Yet, Lucifer was intentionally created knowing full well he would rebel, become Satan and work tirelessly to plunge the world into sin. Of course Satan must persist for thousands of years instead of being destroyed immediately. Because, well because that's why. All of this so that the one and only solution could be put into effect. The torture and slaughter of a human divine hybrid virgin. In case it sounds silly, barbaric and fabricated, fear not. God sprinkled in verse after verse about how foolish and broken you are if you don't buy it. Very mature God!

It always struck me that the "mainstream" Christians could look at Mormonism and dub it a weird, secretive cult-like society that excommunicates completely anyone who doesn't buy into all of Mormon lifestyle and beliefs. Yet, said mainstream Christian will tell you without skipping a beat that the 100% trust that knowledge of a mother, father, son or daughter suffering forever in Hell wouldn't bother them. Simply because they "trust" their divine authority is just. Deeply entrenced tribalism in either case. Anyone who doesn't fit in or conform was really never one of "us".

  • @somexp12
    @somexp12 4 місяці тому

    Really, a defining trait of those who remain Christian for their entire lives is that they are capable of being at peace with the idea of the majority of everyone else burning and screaming forever. They don't feel compelled to sincerely look for proof of their religion, because their religion is already attractive enough to them that wishful thinking carries them through. Consider that. The eternal conscious torment of almost everyone who ever existed is part of their *wishful thinking.* In their minds, *other* people's torment is a small price to pay for relief of *their* petty existential crises. Of those raised Christian, it is the most selfish among them who stay the course. Anyone else would be desperately looking for some kind of proof they could use to convince others to grab the life-raft. This is why the more sincere evangelicals, those who actually engage outsiders with an honest concern for the latters' interests, tend to be the younger ones. If someone's over 40, and they're still playing that game, *and* they actually appear to be at *peace,* it's because they don't really give a hoot about anyone but themselves. They're the ones who can say "better them than me" and then fall right to sleep. This is probably a good part of the reason why Christian "morality" tends to center around "purity" and "lifestyle" issues rather than actual charity for others. Those theologians who remain in Christianity long enough to acquire the seniority to determine the prescribed "morality" tend to be those who, ironically, don't have a moral bone in their body. The human concept of morality is actually built on most people's concern for others' well-being, but theologians are not "most people." They're cognitively aware of the *concept* of morality, but they have less than their share of the instincts that underlie it. Therefore, they tend to promote a form of "morality" completely alien to what a decent human being would intuitively come up with.

      LOVE IT! You're a nicer more considerate person than I am. The last time I went to my church was a Sunday night. I was about 17. There was a discussion about whether the church members would be "allowed" to drink alcohol. They had a panel discussion - disguised as an impartial study of the so-called truth. It was like a Nazi tribunal. The panel was stacked with hard "no's" and everyone knew the eventual outcome before the charade even began. When it was over and the moderator announced that clearly everyone was in agreement that alcohol of any kind would not be tolerated, I blew a gasket. I stood up and said exactly what I thought and stormed out. I got home about 3 hours later and my father was sitting at the kitchen table, and clearly he was not too impressed with my performance. Surprisingly he said: if you don't want to go to church anymore you don't have to." I never stepped into the building again ... my prayers were finally answered? 😉😉

    I totally agree that the question of where God came from is my biggest point of contention with the idea. And Ik that they say that he always existed and that he exists outside of space and time, but that doesn’t explain why he would happen to be all knowing and all powerful. There could have just as well been some random thing that existed outside of space and time instead. So they fail to explain how/why “God” has these perfect attributes. More over, they can’t seem to agree on whether or not God has hands with fingers, and ears, and eyes, and a brain, or if he is made of no parts(the concept known as divine simplicity). I’ve gotten both answers from believers and both answers have their own problems. If God has all these body parts, then they fail to explain why he doesn’t also need a designer. And if he doesn’t have these body parts, then he could not design us in an analogous way to how us humans design things. So if he doesn’t have those body parts then they don’t have much of an explanation for how life came to be as it is other than just alluding to mysterious things beyond human comprehension, and they therefore fail to adequately explain anything that evolution by natural selection does explain.

      There's a thread you can pull on. Did believers _always_ assert that God exists outside space and time? When _exactly_ did they start saying that? Would it be when they finally came round to the idea of the Big Bang and thinking it matched Genesis 1, by any chance? The irony there is that ancient Hebrew cosmology is very, very different from ours and wasn't talking about the universe being created _ex nihilo._ They had no concept of the universe as we understand it, so Christians are being anachronistic here. "When God began to create the heavens and the Earth, the Earth was formless and void," is a more natural translation, and the conclusion is inescapable that the author wanted to say that Earth already existed when Go d started his creating business.

      Atheism is a conclusion one comes to when one finally realizes that all gods ever worshiped by humans were invented by men looking for answers to the mysteries of the world they lived in. We call all the old gods mythology. The current ones are no different, just have people who still cling to them. Rulers learned quickly to harness the power of the myth to keep their tribes and nations together under their own god(s) and claim divine right to rule. We are even seeing such nonsense in today's politics in the U.S. as in Iran, and other theocratic run countries. Even North Koreans are required to revere their dear leader as divine. Efforts to keep their people ignorant and compliant is always their goal to hold power.

    • @Homo_sAPEien
      @Homo_sAPEien 5 місяців тому

      @@rhondah1587 But the point I was making in my original comment is that atheism is a lack of a belief, not in of itself a belief. So it’s not a “conclusion” so much as it is a lack of a conclusion, i.e. the conclusion that a god or gods exist. One may further go from there to draw the conclusion that no god exists, and many atheists do, but that is not a prerequisite of atheism so many atheists don’t go so far as to believe that no god exists.

    A positive aspect of my childhood was that I was never pressured into accepting claims that couldn’t be demonstrated to be true. This made it easy to see that none of the biblical supernatural claims could be demonstrated to be true. The Jesus Christ sacrifice claim seemed so absurd that I never accepted it. Why would an allegedly ‘all powerful’ god require a sacrifice? Yes, that is the same ‘all powerful’ god who couldn’t beat chariots of iron. For countless generations, people have claimed to have communicated with god. Where’s the evidence to demonstrate that anyone has ever communicated with god? How many people have been killed, as a consequence of that claim?
