Photowalk at Lake Ashi & Onshi-Hakone Park in Hakone, Japan・箱根の「芦ノ湖」と「恩賜箱根公園」と「旧東海道」でフォトウォーク
Join me and my border collie, Dale-chan, for a serene photowalk in Hakone, Japan, where we explore three iconic destinations: Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖 / Ashinoko) with its breathtaking views and calm waters, Onshi-Hakone Park (恩賜箱根公園), known for its connection to the former Hakone imperial villa, and a section of the historic Old Tokaido Highway (旧東海道 / Kyu-Tokaido), lined with majestic cedar trees over 300 years old. Together, we uncover the beauty of these locations through landscape photography.
Highlights of the Journey:
・Capturing the reflections on Lake Ashi (Ashinoko), surrounded by lush greenery.
・Walking through Onshi-Hakone Park, where history meets nature.
・Strolling along the Kyu-Tokaido, a path rich with cultural heritage.
Discover the stories behind each photo and learn more about the history of these locations in my blog. I also provide additional resources for further exploration. Click the link to dive deeper into this photowalk:

Thanks for sharing. Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
I love these adventures we go on together!
🥰🥰
Thank you for hearts!❤
Great video dude! which month did you climb it?
Thank you for commenting! This climb was made on December 22, 2020, which was a weekday, so there were very few people and a relatively easy climb. If of any use, feel free to check out the map links I have provided on my blog post related to this climb: www.pix4japan.com/blog/2020/12/mt-kintoki.html
Corrections: 薄暗い、手彫りのトンネル 😅
Wow that’s soo beautiful and sacred place 🌲and I love her 🐶💛she looks so much enjoying exploring around with you guys 🥰❣️❣️
Thank you for the feedback! Video was a bit short, but hopefully conveyed the feelings I felt in the woods and at the cave. Dale-chan was especially happy to find snow! She can't get enough of it!
Very peaceful. Excellent photography. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and comment! Lake Tanuki is not on the map of most tourists so it is incredibly calm and peaceful to visit especially on a weekdays. Please visit if you ever have the chance!😅
Great shots of Mt Fuji!
Thanks for commenting! After arriving to see a dark landscape, am glad I stuck around long enough for the clouds to clear up and provide some good light!😅
Quite the waterfall! And doggo looks like he's enjoying himself :)
Thank you Jason!! My border collie LOVES the water much more than me. Still, it was fun to explore this small but ancient waterfalls with her! She is my best partner for photo shoots!!
Very beautiful
Thank you, Tony!! Hope you are doing well and surviving the summer heat!!
Yes I am thanks , monsoon weather is here …. Tons of rain !
Lovely video with beautiful pics in-between!
Thank you! I was torn between going on a sunny day when it would have been very hot but good views, or a cooler day with more intimate shots. I hope to return again in autumn when the colors change in the highlands. If you are in Japan, this is a rather easy hike for beginners and still fun for more experienced hikers. And super easy on your dog if you have one!😅🐶
あっループ橋だぁぁ🤩😳✨🎉
Thank you for commenting! That bridge is fun to drive on!!😅
Awesome!
Thank you, Toni! Although the park was the main attraction, I love driving on that loop bridge! It’s only two complete circles, but feels a lot longer!
Amazing video. I'm your fan!!!
Thank you! I see you have some great vids of Malta on your site! Very inspirational!
綺麗ですね
ありがとうございました😊 爪木崎に行くチャンスあれば、ぜひ見に行ってみてください。🌊
Gorgeous nature's place, stunning landscape views, great atmosphere and a lovely walk with you. 🥾🥾
Thank you for watching the video! I hope to return to this location again on a clear day and hopefully catch a view of Mt. Fuji!
Thank you for sharing! Amazing views and I love you guys with Dale Chan ✨🐾🐶great team work ‼︎ She is really enjoying exploring with you everywhere together 🥰🏞🥾
Thank you for watching, Mio! She had fun except for crossing the scary bridge near the fishing port!😂
I bet you would love to have a drone to work with too, huh? Marvelous video!!
Yes, you’re right!! A drone would be cool to learn how to use! Would make for some good footage!
🥰
Beautiful work as usual. Even the music is serene. Great job!!
Thank you! Sound design is a bit tough to figure out-how much ambient sound to keep and how much background music to add to compliment the scene. Did you have CC turned on for the subtitles in English?
Thanks for taking me with you to the other side of the world. Beautiful captures :)
Hello Snappiness! Thank you for the comment. You were instrumental in my decision to switch from the KP to the K1-II. I am loving this beast of a camera and all of its quirky manual controls. Almost never need to access the menu system, which a a pure delight since I prefer keeping my eye on the OVF and let muscle memory adjust exposures via dials.

ありがとうございました。ワンちゃんと楽しかった!

Those purple sky tho .💜 Seeing Dale always makes me smile.🌈
Thank you! The sunset was amazing to watch! I had never seen such colors while above some of the clouds.😀
Nice video. I loved that opening shot through the fence. That was great!
Thanks for watching the video and for the lovely comment! Love visiting this park and the waterfront several times a year with my dog. So relaxing!
I’m so glad she is back 😭
Thank you, Mio-kun!!!😍

Very nice views! Thanks!
Thank you for the comment. I hope to visit Hakone again with different scenery and compositions!
Mashallah nice sharing and enjoying the video watching thanks dear. I love your content ❤️
Thank you! I hope to have new videos available in 2022!
美しい風景ですね。清々しい気分になりました!
コメントありがとうございました。将来的にはるかに高品質のビデオを作ることを願っています。
Nice shots! Looks like a great spot!
Thank you! I cheated a little by taking the gondola halfway up the mountain, which I am not able to do usually since I always have my border collie with me. I heard autumn and spring are best for this peak!
@@pix4japan oh yeah, beautiful border collie too :) Autumn is by far my favourite season in Japan! Spring isn't too bad either :)
This is one of the BEST ever! I felt like I was sitting on your shoulder, walking with you, keeping an eye on Dale-chan, and loving every minute of our adventure. You really do live in a fantasy land Dale, so much to explore, so much to see, so many colors, textures, and so much beauty. It feels like not only a honorable tribute to Japan, but to Dale-chan as well. LOVED IT!!!!
Thank you!! I arrived at 4:30 am just at sunrise so there were no tourists-I had the whole park to myself!! Visiting during the rainy season was also nice making colors more vibrant than usual with everything being all wet. I think this park is exceptional since it was once an imperial villa and retreat for the emperor and his family over a century ago.
What beautiful views! So many different grasses, bushes and trees all in one spot. Love the walkway, rail fence, texture and more texture. Surely did enjoy walking with you and see all of this by video. The Hydrangeas are breath taking!! Such a delightful stroll son!! And there's the "Shimenawa", love it.
Thank you! Dale-chan love the chance to play in the water as well. Will come back again sometime to shoot the nearby virgin forest on the outcrop. Don't know if there are any nice shots to have, but just hiking in nature will be good enough for me!
Love that I never know where you are taking us until the next turn. GREAT photography!!
Thank you! Learn something new each time I venture out! A lot of trial and error is involved, but slowly and surely I might be able to shoot exactly as I imagined.
I'm sure Dale-chan would agree that Sayama Lake seems like a wonderful place to spend a morning, well done!
Thank you! She loves any place with water whether it’s in the dead of winter or the heat of summer. I hope to go back to this lake this year for a photo shoot on the other side of the reservoir.
Great!👍👍👍 I love Japan🗻🗾💓
Thank you! Great place for a barbecue! Deep in nature but still in Tokyo!
You been feeling the earthquakes on your adventures at all? This video, it's such a pretty place! It's fun seeing Dale-chan playing as she goes along. Love all of the textures! Beautiful structures son!!
Thanks for watching the video! Most of the quakes are not big enough to notice unless your stationary. I am a little bit more careful when visiting beaches though. Tsunamis are a lot scarier if there is no high ground to run to. I actually found this shrine 12 years ago on a dog walk. Have always wanted to come back with my camera on a rainy day so that colors are less flat.
I just found your channel while looking for locations to shoot Mt Fuji. Please keep up the great work! I really like the atmosphere of your picture, I don`t mind the haze at all.
Thank you for the comment! A clear Mt. Fuji is so illusive in the summer months. I have a few cool locations with views of Mt. Fuji I want to check this year once the government allows long distance travel!
Love the way you changed the focus from forefront to distant! The stairway real or photo shot? It's SO beautiful it simply doesn't look real Dale!! The mound a natural thing or a burial? Beautiful, beautiful video!!!!
Yes, the staircase is real. There actually two, one on each side of the mound. The burial mound (Kofun in Japanese) was built as a tomb to a person of high social status in the latter half of the 6th century. This whole area had about 40 mounds, but only 9 still exist and have been excavated for research. Artifacts found in the tomb in the mound are on display now in a museum located nearby in this park. Thanks for watching!!
So many questions! Is the reservoir low for this time of year. Looking at the bank, it's been higher. What was wound around that one tree trunk, it was so thick! All of the twisted limbs, tree or bushes? What is the other bridge for, walking or driving? The water seemed to change from a green to blue, why? LOVE the blossom shot up close, is the darker pink ones cherry too? Really like the shot of the reservoir framed by blossoms! The blossoms against the blue lake are so striking. Does the reservoir give farmers irrigation water? Sweet, sweet Dale-chan, she's beautiful Dale. Thanks for taking us along, loved it❣❣
Thank you for watching the video. I had some of the same questions when I first arrived at the lake! The reservoir will hopefully fill back up to capacity after the rainy season in June and the typhoon season in August and September. Last summer when I visited here, the lake was a full capacity. The barren tree shot had a a huge vine-like shrub that had grown around the trunk of its host and had grown up with the tree, since the bark of the vine was embedded in the trunk of the host tree. You'd think it would kill the tree, but both plants looked healthy. The two large bridges are open to cars and foot traffic. Each bridge had its own designer making the designs quite different from each other. The pontoon bridge is for foot traffic only. Poor Dale-chan panicked a little bit when the pontoon bridge started bouncing up and down. The more shallow ends of the lake were likely green due to the algae. The darker ends of the lake close to the dam were are dark blue. The water level is so low that there is not much natural flow into the lake and very little overflow exiting the lake. The lake still seems healthy as I saw several fisherman along the shores. Yes! There are seven different species of cherry trees planted on that one hillside. The first dark pink/purple blossoms were of a tree that I think is related to azaleas. The reservoir is just one of several that serve to provide the Tokyo metropolis with drinking water. This reservoir provides Tokyo with about 20% of its needs. Interestingly, most Japanese farms need little irrigation due the large amount of natural rainfall. Rice paddies, of course need to be flooded, but all that water comes from nearby rivers. Other crops are all "irrigated" by natural rainfall. Here is the link to the video I shot last year at the eastern end of the lake. Totally different landscape when it green and humid! ua-cam.com/video/7gJOF5sy9yk/v-deo.html
You always get good low light pentax shots with your KP. Has anyone else in the field made mention to the low light ability of the KP compared to other brands?
Thank you, Steve. When the KP came out, 4 or 5 years ago, Ricoh touted the low-light capability. What they don’t mention is that a 2-or 3-minute exposure takes a long time to write to the SD card. I don’t know if that is common across all brands or not, but requires patience on my part. On a side note, I plan on getting the new K3 III since it has a slot for the faster SD cards, and will supposedly allow me to capture more low-light shots handheld. Will still keep the KP as my regular work horse, however, especially when I’m shooting in wet or sandy conditions. As for other brands, I came over from Nikon and use canon occasionally, but have no experience with landscape photography using those brands in low-light conditions.
What s FUN trip, I so enjoyed it. Thanks for taking us along. Your sweetie enjoys going with you, doesn't she. 🥰🥰
I used to live about a 20-minute walk from this park, so Dale-chan seemed excited about visiting her old stomping grounds! Especially the old slide-going up, going down, and repeat 😂
Whether it's the quality of your images or the cleverness of your sheepdog, it's a beautiful place. Thank you for introducing us!
Thank you, Mika-san! I hope to return someday to capture the west side of the island and hopefully catch a clear shot of Mt. Fuji across they bay.
Always SO impressed with how tidy everything is. So well kept! Do like the photo shoot, so many different colors of green. Love how she kept looking back to make sure where you are at all times! So sweet. Was a great hike, thanks for taking us along!
Thank you for watching the video and commenting! The whole mountain was originally a God and worshipped as such for thousands of years. In modern Japan, it has become less of a holy site and more of tourist destination. However, the locals still consider this mountain to be their chapel, and take extra care to make sure there is no litter and that the trails are accessible and clean. When I am alone on the trails and just listen to the birds and insects, I definitely feel a sense of spirituality that I once felt when trekking out on my own in the hills and mountains during family picnics.
Outstanding! Love it!!
Thank you for watching. Winter photography is a lot more difficult than I had anticipated. Getting the right exposure for the highlights and shadows was tough. I hope I have a chance to try again before spring arrives.
What a beautiful journey you took us on! Thank you.
Hopefully I can get out soon for another photo shoot. Need to find a safe place to shoot where there won't be any other people.
