With each time-out, detention, suspension, expulsion, paddling, restraint, seclusion, & arrest at school, there are children who aren’t getting the help they need & are being pushed away from caregivers who could instead be helping them.
Doing things differently requires a major paradigm shift. Kids with concerning behaviors aren’t lacking motivation, they’re lacking skills, especially those related to flexibility, adaptability, frustration tolerance, & problem-solving. They aren’t attention-seeking, manipulative, coercive, or unmotivated. They don’t need more punitive interventions that just push them out and away. They do need adults who know how to collaborate with them on solving the problems that are causing their concerning behaviors.
That’s why we’re here. Lives in the Balance advocates for our most vulnerable kids, & helps caregivers see them through more accurate, productive lenses & intervene in evidence-based ways that are non-punitive, non-exclusionary, & effective.

I wish that schools could lower their classroom sizes, so educators, specialists and children can get the support they need. More training is not going to completely solve the issue, it will just be more training for teachers who have large classrooms…without regular, reliable support. Educators and specialists need the support in order to effectively support the children, with a wide range of needs.
If you care about your ch, child why does anyone put their children in horrible places?

Anybody who does this to a child belongs on the sex offender registry
I feel all of this. I hear everyone of these caregivers. My 5 year old was put in a windowless room in a public Montessori school they called a mindfulness room. I didn’t know; now I do but the trust with the public school system is gone
