The Novium Museum
Приєднався 25 чер 2012
Chichester City's new museum, The Novium, will celebrate the history of the Chichester District and feature the remains of the Roman Baths. Opened in 2012.
The Magic of Middle-earth Exhibition
Exhibition open at The Novium Museum from 1 April - 24 September 2023
Admission: £4 adults, £2.50 children and £12 family of five (maximum 2 adults). Book online: www.thenovium.org/magicofmiddleearth
The Magic of Middle-earth presents a magical treasure trove of objects and artworks celebrating the epic fantasy novels 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'.
This exciting exhibition is dedicated to the incredible fantasy worlds brought to life by J.R.R. Tolkien and the generations of creators his writing has influenced.
Tolkien was an English writer, poet, philologist, and academic. He is best known as the author of 'The Hobbit' (1937) and 'The Lord of the Rings' (1954). Regarded as the 'father' of modern fantasy literature, Tolkien's cultural influence has extended far beyond other authors. Middle-earth has inspired creative minds of all types and acted as a Minecraft-like toolbox for generations of artists, musicians, film makers, environmentalists and game designers - most recently inspiring Amazon's 2022 blockbuster series 'Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power'. The Magic of Middle-earth will take visitors on a journey beyond the books to explore that expansive artistic legacy.
The exhibition features over 200 incredible artworks and objects from across the decades including:
A rare first edition copy of The Hobbit from 1937;
Dramatic models and dioramas including The Battle of Helms Deep;
Concept artwork, theatre, music and movie-inspired memorabilia and prop replicas;
Stunning paintings of dragons, Ents and Elves and artwork illustrating Tolkien's deep passion for the natural world;
Middle-earth inspired video games and LEGO sets;.
A soundscape including music by Howard Shore, who composed, orchestrated, conducted and produced the music of 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy (2001 - 2003) and 'The Hobbit' film series (2012 - 2014).
The exhibition includes gallery interactives in the 'Hobbiton' family area: take a selfie in a Hobbit chair and experience the surprise of an animatronic version of Smaug the Dragon! 'Little halflings' can get into character with fancy dress costumes and follow a Mystical Quest trail through the museum.
Relaxed SEN Sessions are available on selected dates throughout the run of the exhibition. Our relaxed sessions are aimed at people with autism and other needs, as well as their families and carers to be able to enjoy The Magic of Middle Earth in a relaxed atmosphere with limited numbers. All background sound, including Smaug the animatronic dragon, will be turned off for the duration of this session.

What is the raised dome stone shape at the end? Is it a type of grinding tool?
This is a great video. Thank you!!!
Are these the same paints that would be used in making illuminated manuscripts?
Some pigments are the same the green for example but depending on the location and time period the pigments change. The book the materials and techniques of medieval painting by David v Thompson has a comprehensive list of you're interested.
This was such an incredible and inspiring video! Each step made me want to go exploring for pigments, try something new and follow along. I can’t wait to try. Thank you!!
Very nice! Thank you
where aand how do I get the stones/minerals and how do I start making my own please?
Thank you very much. OLÉ!!!
I hate your videos
well you wasted your time on this, so you hate yourself, and you wasted your time watching this, just to make a hate comment! Imagine watching a video just to make a hate comment☠💀💀💀☠☠☠
Amazing info. My marble pedestal and mortar are so dry at the bottom. I bought it like this, so hoping adding water helps!!! Great info 👏👏👏👏
معلومات رائعة استفدت كثيرا منها شكرا
Incorrect, plant material can be turned into pain. Plenty of UA-cam videos showing how to do so. Same process, powder the the dried plant material then do everything as you do with minerals. Humans have used plant material to make paint since the dawn of man.
Plant dyes weren't often used in frescos (most of the surviving art of the time) due to the lime stone being too caustic to the dyes. So while they were used for dyeing cloth and other fiber arts they were rarely used in painting until about 70 b.c. when they (the Romans) learned wax painting from the Egyptians.(Though no surviving Roman encaustic art has been found, references were made by pliny the elder in his natural histories).
@@michaelah1001do plant pigments last when they are painted with or do they rapidly fade?
I wish you would show all the steps, getting the pigment separated from large particles and water is not easy or obvious.
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Very well explained. And it's so nice to work with nature .
❤Excellent
വളരെ ക്രിംഗ്
Excellent!
Thank you! This helped me a lot with my ww2 project!
Can I use the beach 🏖 stones
Use Cow Dung 😅
I lived in North Bersted for a long time and have a passionate love for history and I never knew about this before! Thank you for this video, it was really interesting to watch! :)
a syringe would help you get to that middle pigment layer
Excellent. I love these films about the Romans in Chichester. I’m keen to lean more 🏛️🤺🗡️
do pigment extracted from coal can be considered as a mineral pigment/paint
i don't think so by technicality since coal is not a mineral and is made from compressed fossils. However it might act the same way in a practical application, being mostly carbon?
I haven't seen that coal have been used as a pigment, but charcoal, soot and burnt bones are all used as pigment. You can buy paints made from those pigments in the nearest art material shop.
Can you use the coloured clays that you can get through cosmetic shops. Thank you for the video.
hi there! very interesting video - how long did the whole process take?
Thank you
She cheated. She didn't put the coloured earth into the motar, it was already there!!
"She didn't mine the marble to make the pestle & mortar either. Nor turn them on water wheel powered stone cutting lathes, or make the dams & aqueducts for the water resource to turn said lathes...My- what a lazy gal! In my day we would do all that by breakfast! " 🧐 Tacitus Unrealisticus
Very nice❤👍
Did they use files for sharpening the blade as shown here? Didn't they use sharpening stones?
The IMR is very well done.
Does the milk need to not be pasteurized?
My daughter loves making her own charcoal pigment. It’s nice and easy if you’d like to include a child- much easier on the hands!
😂 this proves that using mineral pigments is not a necesity, charcoal is totally organic. But yes, I understand what she was trying to say.
Is the sand considered the granulation that everybody pays so much money for in watercolor
God bless this legionaire and this man who portrayed him. So much dedication and discipline to be the greatest empire in the world.
Perfect 😍 thank you
thanks needed it for project
Wow. Fascinated by your process.
can pearls be used ad a material for making pigmant?
lmao that would be some expensive pigment no?
It's clear. In Britain men are not allowed to have professional jobs.
Do they still take applications? I'm thinking of joining. Might travel a bit. Live, love, laugh.
stay strong julianus, gaul will be yours one day!
I hope he gets that tavern.
I want more videos like this! Very well done
