PART 8 - INTERACTIVE MAP TUTORIAL 🔴 STARTING WITH VS CODE, SETUP HTML, CSS AND JAVASCRIPT
Hello everyone, my name is Rúben Duarte. 👋
I work as a GIS Specialist, but I have been increasingly passionate about the world of programming.
This is the eighth video in the series on how to create an interactive map.
Today we are going to start our adventure into the world of web development. I’ll begin with a video where I’ll show you how to set up the HTML page, insert the SVG file, and link it with the CSS and JavaScript files.
Basemap: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1vBH9VJKF5FHpYoxaucReOFTH4iL-ip40
SVG Map: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1mR-gHmdLr4eqBgSoWKGu_M_g63_hELnn
This is the eighth tutorial video in a series of 19 episodes that will culminate in the online publication of the Santo Inácio Zoo Interactive Map. 🐅
During this process, I will cover various areas I am passionate about. I will start by working in Adobe Illustrator, where I will illustrate all the elements of a static map into vector format, and then I will transform this project into SVG format. 🎨
Finally, in Visual Studio Code, using CSS and JavaScript, I will bring this map to life by embedding it in HTML for desktop. 🖥️
Midway through this journey, I will also work with the Canva platform to create images that will appear on the final map. 🖼️
I can't thank you enough for watching this video, so if you feel these tutorials have brought you something valuable, give it a like, subscribe, and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask in the comments section. 👍👍👍

Any chance you can create a tutorial for uploading 360 images with the Oriented Imagery toolbox in ArcGIS Pro?

Sir, I recently got to your videos of Arc GIS. Great content and successfully subscribed to your channel. Keep it up, sir.
Thank You :)
very enlightening and helpful for my research, but how to include hotspot data variables, I mean in the spatial analysis Thanks
If you have the hotspots in a point shapefile, you can create a Kernel Density Estimation instead of using polygons of burned areas. This approach is useful because it transforms the density of points into a continuous field, allowing you to identify areas with higher concentrations of hotspots without relying directly on burned area polygons.
Hello, thank you for the outstanding video. I do not see exactly how you insert or differentiate start dates and end dates
Hi thank you! Each year starts at January 1st. Example: Lisbon 01/01/2002 Lisbon 01/01/2003 Lisbon 01/01/2004 Lisbon 01/01/2005 ...
@@MapsbyRGD oohh thank you, I see the thing exactly, and the difference with what I am currently trying to implement is with variable time frames, some events running on 10 years and others on two. Any link for that? Thanks.
Hi. I'm using the same dataset but encountering a problem with joining the Excel dataset to the shapefile. I realized that whenever I import the Excel dataset (.csv) into ArcGIS Pro, the zero (0) in front of the 'Join_code' values is removed, which makes the codes unrelated to those in the shapefile. Am I supposed to change the Excel dataset’s extension? I would appreciate any assistance. Thank you.
Hi! The issue you’re experiencing with the removal of leading zeros is common with CSV files. When ArcGIS Pro reads the data, it interprets values like "01234" as numeric rather than as text, which causes it to drop the leading zero. Try setting the 'Join_code' as Text in Excel; this will probably fix the problem.
@MapsbyRGD Thank you for honoring my request
Let me know if it worked 😀
It didn't work, but I found a solution to it. I exported the excel dataset to DBASE Table(.dbf), created a new field, and set it to text. I used .zfills() to set the Joint_Code to four characters.
Fantastic!
Could you please make the data you used for the tutorial available?
Of course! Use this link: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1EHEzZFqVsYYVfZ6Xh4SKc8LAVp1aaDi4

Thank you ❤
Excellent analysis 👍
I have been learning a lot from you and I'm very grateful. Please, do you have a video on the suitability model?
Thank you for the comment. I don’t have any videos like that at the moment. But is there a specific topic you’re interested in?
thank you in advance for the learning video, I would like to ask if it is possible to analyze the hotspots for forest and land fires and then add other factors such as rain conditions, population density and land use status, thank you.
Hello, Thank you for your comment. What is the final goal of your analysis?
@@MapsbyRGD created a Forest and Land Fire Vulnerability Map, based on Land Cover, VIIRS hotspot data and consecutive dry days in 2019-2023. The purpose of the map is to map areas where forest and land fires often occur to areas where they rarely occur.
You could try an see the result. Altough, in my case, when I do a map like that i use the official methodology used in my country (I have a video of 2 parts about creating a wild fire risk map). Part 1: ua-cam.com/video/nXbSS1J0lfU/v-deo.html Part 2: ua-cam.com/video/6nCJH5HS3-8/v-deo.html

Hi Nice video, can you tell me the meaning of the values in resulted map (that is 35.0218 -79.1532 )
Hello, thank you for your comment! The values represent the maximum and minimum seismic susceptibility. In this type of exercise, the final value, by itself, doesn’t represent much. That’s why we then need to define what type of interval we want to apply, whether by quantiles, standard deviation, or another method. Therefore, what’s important to note is that 79 in this case represents the highest susceptibility value and 35 the lowest. If we used the same methodology for another study area, the values would always be different.
In the piechart section i cant add more than 3 fields, it gives me the message ''Requested operation could not be completed.'' do you by any change know a fix for this?
this only happens when i set the appearence to sum of selected fields
The fields are all of the same type?
Yessss
Thanks for this video. I am currently integrating Field Maps for my organisation to collect data for our site visits. I used the Field Maps Designer initially to get quickly set up to test the app, but this methodology looks more comprehensive and better for linking data back to our project models on ArcPro. I can't wait to start using this software more!
Glad you liked it. Wish you luck on your future projects 🙏
Hi. Can we request for the sample data set used in the video for practice? This will be very useful for our research. Thanks a lot RGD...

@@MapsbyRGD Thanks a lot...!
Great effort, can you explain the reasons for the values of weights for each raster, is there a documentation or literature to back that?
Hello, there are several articles that use different methodologies, both with this input data and with others. In this example, I didn't use any specific methodology. Initially, I was going to use a normal average, giving equal weights to all inputs, but since I am familiar with the area in question, I decided to assign lower weights to the aspect and precipitation, as the Lisbon area, in the general context of the country, is less humid and rainy.
I am facing issues while creating dataset for my analysis.can you share the model dataset which will be very helpful for me

Amazing I’ve never used relate in GIS, always join by table or spatial join Thank you
Relates can be quite interesting when we need to fill in periodic data, e.g. water/electricity counts , tree pruning as shown in the video, among others 😀
Nice Video, Can you please tell me how can I download wildfire data for India?
Hello, thank you. Try this: Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS)
That was fast 🎉
In QGIS its more intuitive 😀
Thanks. So much easier than sifting through Esri webpages.

Very good, I do this a lot in ArcGIS , very helpful
For sure, this tool is fantastic when working with thorough projects.
what am i looking at? this got recommended to me and i’d like to know more about it.
Hi! This is a basic technique to check if two variables are related spatially. I have this full tutorial in my channel (most recent video) 😊
@@MapsbyRGD thank you ill be dure to check it out, seems interesting
Can you include polygon, line and point in field map for data collection?
Hi @justinquarshie5732 , yes you can use the 3 types 😀
I have structured my data as per this video and duplicated the join values in a temporal manner as per the location. However when I try to create a space time cube, I get this error: 000644: Duplicate IDs found in <value>. Please help.
Hello @chandanbhuyan8394, sorry to hear that. Looking at this error, at first seight, it looks like your attribute table has rows with id's that are not unique, but that's all I can do to help you without looking at your data. If you'd like me to take a look at your shapefiles, send me a message on LinkedIn ;)
@@MapsbyRGD Hello, thank you for your prompt response. After much trial and error, I have figured it out. Great tutorials by the way, they are really helpful.
Very informative 🎉
A very cool and easy way to expedite simple surveys in the field 😜
Great viz!
Thank you :) @jeremy_leung
This is amazing, where can we get CO2 emissions data for countries outside of Europe ie Africa and Asia
Hi @justinquarshie5732, probably what we can find online are estimates, which can often be unreliable, particularly in the case of developing countries! Thank you for the support 😀
Why do the 2 bits of code differ? In one you return True and False, and in the other you set restricted = True or False. This is a bit confusing - are these 2 methods of doing the same thing or is there a purpose ? thank you..
Hi @bowzarama, I rewatched that part of the video and you are 100% correct. The two code blocks differ and they worked, but they could be, for sure, simplified using a similar version of one of them. I didn't try it, but I believe something like this should work: SetOneway(!DIR_TRAVEL!) def SetOneway(value): if value and value.upper() in ('F'): return True return False
Well done ❤
Thank you 👍😉
perfect! i watched to apply the same method on the earthqake assessment

@@MapsbyRGD thanks
Great Video! I watched it through and got some great ideas. If you want to make this a web map in ArcGIS Online, you have to make the icons into Pro symbols because AGOL won't publish images with the map. To do this export the icons to EMF or SVG format. Then in the Symbology editor in Pro select the Layers button and you'll see a File button - that will upload a file as the symbol (it only reads EMF or SVG). When you share the map as a Web Map the symbols go with it! They respect the transparent background and resize with the zoom scale. Also by making the icons into symbols, you can edit larger maps or reuse the symbols much easier. In my instance I'm mapping a festival and I need the icons for things like Food Truck or Street Barricade to appear many times.
Hello, I'm really glad you liked the video ☺️ I didn't knew we could transform images into Pro Symbols. I Will, for sure, explore this a little bit more ☺️ Thank you for your detailed explanation 💪
