My Saga Insurance Saga
This is about my experience of my claim from Saga Motor Insurance after accident. I feel that the way insurance companies treat their clients is completely unacceptable, trying, as they do, to pinch pennies at every corner irrespective of the inconvenience to their clients.

My First Long Distance Trip in the e-Niro...It didn't quite go to plan!

This is my first long distance trip in the e-Niro mostly motorway service station charging. I was worried but it went well, at least the journey did. Maybe I was lucky but as you will see, I found all of the scaremongering stories without foundation.

I got a deal from Arnold Clark on an Evec 7kWh charger installed for £499. I thought it would work well with my style of driving with the Octopus Go Tariff, four hours cheap rate charging is probably adequate for me. But I can't tell because, unfortunately, as of today, although it was scheduled for installation on 26th Jan, it's still not working. I am hopeful though and will let you know. In ...

    I too have metastatic prostate cancer and have undergone several treatments, including ADT. I have experienced the symptoms that you mention in this and the other video. The effects (lets not even call them "side effects" because the drugs cause them in virtually all cases from what I can tell) are horrible and will continue as long as you take the ADT. Why be miserable and sick every day of your life? The ADT makes one a weak, tired old man. I am not ready for that. So, I support you one hundred percent. I wish you all the best. Rob

      Thanks for your comments Rob. My decision, is, of course a personal one and I know that many men in my position might think differently. Each to his own. I think you are right that "side effects" is the wrong term as they are inevitable perhaps in varying degrees according to the individual. As I say in the video, I choose quality over quantity of life but that is very much a personal decision. Thanks again for your comments and I wish you well with your own path through this illness.

    We’re really sorry you’ve had all this hassle with SAGA, it’s criminal how these companies treat people. It’s almost like we are expected to pay them to make money for themselves. If it weren’t illegal to drive without insurance they’d be struggling in any other market. We wonder if you’ve tried NFU Mutual? They too are expensive but have a good reputation, we have used them for years (thankfully never yet had to claim). If you speak to them tell them about your experience. We hope you do feel able to continue making your videos - about any subject you find interesting; how about the transition to a hybrid vehicle if that’s what you go for? Good luck and as another commenter said “keep buggering on!” ❤

    I'm so very sorry to hear about what has been a distressing experience not aided by the dreadful service from SAGA. They certainly don't live up to their claim to support older drivers. The main thing is however that both you and the cyclist have been spared any injury. On a separate note, after the video about your health journey I did go to my GP for a check followed by a PSA test. Thankfully, my test came back as ''normal'' but I have been prescribed Tamsulosin. This has really had a very positive effect on my life and thank you again for the shove. I hope you might find an apartment that has ev chargers installed. If not, if you enjoy making videos, I'm certain we'd enjoy any on any subject. In the meantime take care.

      Thanks for your comments. I'm glad your PSA is normal and it's great that they have found an anomaly and that the prescribed treatment is effective for you. I live in hope though. Thanks again for your comments.

    I am so sorry to hear of your troubles. Whenever I look for insurance, Saga have always been rather expensive, but I thought, rather naively, that this would fund higher levels of customer service. Apparently not. Car insurance in the UK is nothing but a scam. But keep the videos coming, if you can, it's always good to hear from you. Keep buggering on! And never mind about the hybrid decision. Quite understandable. Big changes ahead: make a video or two about the transition to Glasgow. Good luck!

    Sorry to hear about the Niro situation, it's great to hear no-one got seriously hurt. Unfortunately the very best you can hope for is that the insurer puts you back into the position you would otherwise have been had the crash not happened. The process is going to take time & its common in these situations for that to be months, not days. You sound like you're prepared for them to low ball you on their first offer, having all your information ready, e.g. market pricing (evidenced by screenshots from Autotrader) for similar age/mileage Niro's will help. Best wishes with your move & looking on the bright side, an EV in Glasgow is even more practical, your mileage is likely to significantly reduce because public (free) transport is so good that you'll find a full charge will last weeks and there are so many more options for public charging in the city. This might be an opportunity to try something new, perhaps treat yourself to a Tesla Model 3 for practicality, or the new MG Cyberster for a bit of fun but definitely not practical, no-one seems to be using "TeslaPensioner" or "MGPensioner"! as their channel name. Both have a range in excess of 300 miles, although with the Tesla you may need to adjust to not having stalks for wipers, indicators, etc. on the steering column. Whatever you decide to do I wish you all the very best & thanks for the entertaining & informative content you put out, long may it continue.

    Very sorry to hear of your troubles, hopefully they give you a reasonable settlement offer my parents had to claim last year because their diesel ford focus caught fire, it took some time to resolve but they were happy with the compensation in the end and bought a hyundai kona EV to replace it which they love. I just recently bought an eniro myself having seen yourself and many others singing it's praises. I hope you keep up the videos you are very pleasant to listen to! I wouldn't blame you for switching to a hybrid if you can't charge from home, I know it's possible to manage without but it would be a lot more hassle and more expensive.

      Hi, Thanks for your kind comments. I have considered staying with an EV in the city but having walked around the area where I plan to relocate I can see that it is very difficult to find a free charge point. For that reason, I think the inconvenience of an EV is not realistic for me. Perhaps as the charger network improves I will be able to reconsider. I'm pleased to hear that your parents were happy with their settlement. I hope that I am soon able to say the same. Good luck with your e-Niro. Thanks again for your kind comments.

My PSA hasn’t fallen as quickly as I would have liked but it is still dropping every 3 months ( last tested at 1.7). To deal with the fatigue I ride my bike and have now ramped it up to 60 minutes a day on a road bike (started on an e bike). This seems to work for me and I don’t see the fatigue and my bike times are improving every week. Thanks for your comments. I did my best. I agree about the cost and convenience. I first bought an EV for environmental reasons. I was concerned about the state of the planet that my grandchildren are inheriting. However, I would never go back now for economic reasons. I charge mostly at home which works out at about 2.5p per mile as opposed to 16p per mile for an ICE. Add to that, greatly reduced servicing costs and its a no brainer.

    The charging curve on any EV is very dependant on battery %full, you will only get high charge at very low % on older Niro, it is the car not the charger. Having driven from Tamworth to the Outer Hebrides, (Leverburgh) in a Leaf 30 , you've no problems!

    • @NiroPensioner
      @NiroPensioner Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment. I would say yes and no to that. Of course I understand the charging curve but I have found charging speeds vary at similar states of charge. The charging at the Gridserve Electric Forecourt that disappointed me was because I arrived with a low state of charge, around 20% but the maximum charge rate that I got on an up to 90kWh charger was 52kWh on a hot day. Whereas at a Gridserve charger at Grantham North Service Station, I started with 25% and although, of course, the speed varied, it did reach 72kWh.

    There is a secret to DC charging - get a Tesla membership (£8.99 per month) and plan your route using their chargers - it will cost less than half the price of using others, their chargers work and their app is superior. The others have taken the government subsidy to roll out the chargers and then are profiteering from the charges.

    Hope you don't mind a few questions which arose in my mind after watching this. Just wondering whether you checked tyre pressures before setting off, slightly over inflating the tyres on a longer journey can help with efficiency. Also, did you rely on the built-in sat nav or a third party offering like Google maps or A Better Route Planner? Are you aware that there are open Tesla sites which would be substantially cheaper than Gridserve offerings, particularly if you take advantage of member rates.

    BTW battery life is extended by only charging to lower states of charge (although occasional full charges are OK, but don't leave it near 100% for long periods especially in hot weather) Jeff Dahn (academic and battery researcher to Tesla) gave a good explanitory live stream in recent YT video "Your Battery Questions Answered with Dr. Jeff Dahn, Dalhousie U." - he normally charges his EV to 70%. The e Niro battery management is quite conservative and is also somewhat constrained by the speed that the water cooling system can remove heat from the pack (which is in turn limited by the shape of the individual cells - they're quite big flat NMC622-graphite pouch cells which are only cooled at each end). The charge speed is determined by the lower of what the charger is willing to deliver and what the e niro is willing to accept. Generally on all but the oldest CCS chargers, what the Niro BMS is willing to accept is the limiting factor. BTW, a few days ago, we found an old Charge Place Scotland 50kW charger at a distillery off the A9 near Inverness which only costs 18p / kWh ! Sadly the CCS connector on that particular charger was out of order when we were there (still at least the Leaf owners could get a cheap 50 kW Chademo charge there).

    • @NiroPensioner
      @NiroPensioner Місяць тому

      Hi, Thanks for your comments. I do normally only charge to 70% with the occasional full charge and run to near empty. I watched the video you mention some time ago. Prior to that I charged to 80% normally. There used to be lots of cheap and even free charging in Scotland (usually at 22kW and below) but the huge hike in energy costs put an end to that.

  • @Tim_Small

    Just did a similar trip last week in a newly acquired e-Niro with family of 4 (Sussex to Edinburgh) - worked pretty well. We charged at the Tesla chargers in Banbury and Manchester, which was reasonably cheap (around 35 to 45p per kWh if I remember correctly after buying 1 month of Tesla membership for £9.50) and subsequently a little bit at (non-Tesla) Tebay (didn't really need it). It was a warm day (AC on for a bit of it) although last leg got a bit of rain. Did 4.7 miles per kWh overall I think which was better than I was expecting Mostly drove at 60 mph or so - didn't think the extra speed was worth it due to a chunk of it having to be repaid in longer time spent charging...

    • @NiroPensioner
      @NiroPensioner Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comments. I think you are doing well with 4.7 miles per kWh. I usually only manage that on stop start driving with a lot of re-gen happening but I do tend to set the cruise control to 70mph on the motorways.

  • @enyaq_gorm
    @enyaq_gorm Місяць тому

    Hit the nail on the head, you couldn't do it faster in an ICE as it would need a separate fuel stop. By the way the slow charging will be down to a cold battery in the main. Cold and full batteries charge slower, so you need it to be hot and empty to get top speed. The Niro is a great car with good efficiency

    • @NiroPensioner
      @NiroPensioner Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment. A couple of days before I was due to set off. I paid for the premium versions of both ABRP and ZapMap but decided in the end not to use them and to just wing it but ABRP recommended 4 stops, the longest of which was 26mins and as you suggest keeping the charge level low for faster charging. However, as I say, the way that we did it worked out just fine for us. The only time the charging speed was a real issue was when I wanted to charge to 100% on the Electric Forecourt but to be honest, there was really no need for me to charge to 100% anyway.

    If you haven't already then it might be worth getting the reduction gear box oil changed. Difficult to know exactly what's going on with these but the car I just bought had the entire transmission and motor replaced at 88k miles. It seems that the magnet which is supposed to capture any stray metal particles which wear off the gears is not always effective, and leaves them circulating in the oil. Kia doesn't specify a change at all, so far as I know, but does give the oil specification in the warranty book. It's about £20 per litre and just over 1 litre is needed. Labour cost will depend on the garage but it takes about 15 minutes. Plenty of info on the forums, including a write up from a retired mechanical engineer "KiwiME".

    You definately need to get checked gents if you're over 50, after a regular PSA test last November I was found to have PC (Gleason 7 4+3 stage 3a). My three older brothers had PSA tests a month later and all three were found to have PC too, so now we are all at various stages of treatment. I am 8 months into 2yrs of hormone treatment which is brutal, it is chemical castration afterall. My advice to anyone starting hormone treatment (ADT) is to start lifting weights and exercising (nothing crazy just regular), walking is good. I have found that this helps very much with the fatigue. I have put 2 stone on, 6" to my waist, starting to grow breasts, feet swell up, constant hot flushes, loss of body hair, aches and pains in the legs, I could go on. If you get tested and you find the PC early then you probably will not have to undergo the hormone tratment etc, I had zero symptoms as did my three brothers, a simple blood test will put your mind at rest.

    • @NiroPensioner
      @NiroPensioner 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for your comments and frank description of your side effects. I believe that there should be a screening program for PC for men much as there is for breast and cervical cancer in women. This is a cancer that if it is caught early enough can be effectively treated and, as you say, PC at its early stages has no symptoms that would encourage anyone to go to their doctor to get tested. I wish you well with your treatment program.

    Thank you for making this video update. As with others who have commented, it seems to me that you are making the right decisions for you. As someone who is inclined towards activity, as you clearly are, I can well understand your desire to maintain your energy levels at the highest level possible. I don't have cancer, touch wood, but at 71 I find myself needing much longer to recover after heavy exertion, and it frustrates me, so I do sympathise. If you can summon up the energy (big dose of coffee, maybe) I would love an update on the Niro. I would recommend eating in a restricted window (I try to do 1pm to 7pm), reduced carbs and absolutely no ultra processed foods. Read Chris Van Tulleken's book, Ultra Processed People. Anyway, I wish you all the best, and fight the good fight.

      Thanks for your comments. I do believe that I'm doing the right thing for me. I am aware on the fatigue front that I am getting older too. I do have a good diet, I cook fresh food and eat plenty fruit and veg. I will have a look at the book that you suggest though. I have thoughts for a couple of videos on the Niro which I hope to do in the next few days. I have been a bit busy recently. I am also in the process of a house sale. I am planning to move closer to my daughter and her family and also free up some equity. I love my home but it is quite isolated and I need to be a bit closer to life. Thanks for watching and I hope your sale goes through ok.

    Thanks for the video. I am on Lupron and Enzalutamide and fatigue is the main thing that bothers me. It did reduce my PSA from 1460 down to undetectable and I will be on it until it doesn’t work any more. Your description of side effects lets me know that I am not alone in this Journey.

      Thanks for your comment. One of the factors in helping me to my decision was that although my treatment was highly effective, at some point, it will cease to be so. My other reasons are personal to me and are heavily influenced by the loss of my wife. I wish you well with your treatment.

    Thank you for making this follow-up video. All of us have to paddle down this white water individually but it is good to learn why you made the decisions you did. Your candour and honesty about this dreadful predicament is so life-affirming for at least this one viewer.

    Good to hear that you are making decisions for you and not for others, and that quality of life over quantity as say.

      Thank you. You know, I felt better the same day that I made the decision and it was purely psychological. I felt that I was back in control of my own life.
