    Always loved this piece, but it clearly was recorded indoors. This must be lip-synching.

    Such an outstanding piece of vocal mastery ,indeed the human voice is the best instrument you can play with,and it's divine and original .God bless you all.

    what a sensational choir and magnificent performance! I am so impressed, cant believe i havent heard of them before. This choir seriously rivals the big names.

    I imagine that the riff-raff think this slushy sentimental claptrap "oh so lovely" !!

    It's gorgeous singing, but I don't understand the presentation

    Lovely! Almost as good as the King’s Singers. Can’t imagine why some conductors put their whole soprano line on the top line when it is so delicate!

    Translation O Light born of Light, Jesus, redeemer of the world, mercifully deign to accept the praises and prayers of your suppliants. O you who once deigned to be hidden in flesh on behalf of the lost, grant us to be made members of your blessed body.

    Every performance of this beautiful music I listen to I compare with what I think is the defining rendition - recorded by the BBC, in the late 1980's I think, for an anniversary, the detail of which I have forgotten. The BBC will not release it into the public domain, but I heard a short clip of it on My Music. The soprano on that occasion was right on song, a fabulous performance.

      I have that CD. It came with the BBC Music magazine, to which a coworker subscribed. She didn't want the CD so I was very lucky to get it. I agree the soprano was absolutely perfect in the recording.

      Who was the soprano? And any chance of an upload? That would be great.

      Do you mean in this recording by The Choir of Gonville and Caius College, or the RCA one? If you click the link of my reply just above, it will take you to the recording that Olive Simpson uploaded. All the performers are listed on the image.

      Thanks, Hugh. I meant on Chris's recording but I can't see a link on your reply. I would also like to know who the sop is on the Gonville & Caius, strange there's no credit.

    Just about perfect but did the generally uninspired Stanford really write this?

    • @roberthaines4221
      @roberthaines4221 8 років тому

      +peter owen -- Stanford certainly wrote the music; the lyrics were from a Mary Coleridge poem ("L'Oiseau Bleu")

      There might be another equally excellent choral work composed by Stanford, but, compared to the music of his students-Frank Bridge, Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan-Williams-most don't belong in the same concert hall.

      I also agree. Their O Nata Lux video is also not good - very affected and distracts from the sublimity of the music - and the performance which is quite good. Either get a top-drawer creator of such videos or make it very simple - of an actual performance in one of those Cambridge chapels (or any number of such chapels in England) that are so beautiful.
