The Stoke Hornpipe performed live by 31musicians at The Glebe in Stoke-on-Trent on 04/01/2011. The Stoke Hornpipe is a great traditional English fiddle tune, popular since around 1800 in the Potteries. Very good for clog dancing.

Great moving song of two American songwriters an homage to Victor Jara. I thanks you with all my heart this song today and before. V. Jara not only composed for the Chilean people buy also for the human conditions in our peoples of Latin America, Vietnam. He also took one of the song of Pete Seeger and transformed into a satirical song called "Las casitas del barrio alto" (The little houses of the High Neighborhood). Thanks you American brothers for this homage.

Great session with the Boat Band at Foxfield on 5 September. Fine fundermold of the symbrant brass from Kate and Mark and good to meet Esther for the first time. Also great food and very fine brewflade in a pub that believes in real Cumbrian hospitality. A grand day out -- and no need to drive, thanks to Northern Rail.

I only found out about the sad death of Brian today.I watched "Revolver" film last night and as is usual of me I Googled Brian and learned the sad news.He was about 3 weeks older than me and I have always enjoyed seeing him on TV.He was a natural performer.I always said that if they made a film on Keith Moon Brian would have been the best choice for lead role.God Bless You Matex

So sad to hear of Brian's death. Taken from us too young and too early. Love goes out to all those who were close to him...what a singer, what an actor and what a good man! So sad to hear of his death. This is a beautiful tribute to him...thanks Greg for putting this up. Watched it the other night but didn't read the bit below about Brian dying on the 20/06/2012. Another brilliant musical/acting talent taken from us too early!! Bea Mitchell

Omg...I didn't realize Brian had died!! Jeez...this world is so horrilbly cruel....When I first saw this post I didn't realize it was also a Tribute to Brian. What a lovely, funny man and such a great actor!!! Hope you're still singing wherever you are Brian. With love, Bea Mitchell xxx

I should mention that I posted this on the boatbandvideo channel because that's the only UA-cam I have access to. THis is not the Boat Band as such playing,it's a bunch of musicians associated with Adrian Mitchell and radical theatre generally, (Welfare State International in particulalar).

Next Hornpipe Happening is at the Glebe in Stoke on Tuesday Feb 1. Playing the Stoke Hornpipe and the Hanley Hornpipe at 10PM(plenty of music before that though, starts around 9)

  • @boatbandvideo

Tony Weatherall was playing a 1-row 4 stop melodeon in D on this. From memory(it was 10 years ago) I would say that Mark Burke was also playing a 2 row D/G Hohner Erica as well, but I can't swear that I can hear it there. Maybe he wasn't there when we did this track? The fiddle is Kate Barfield and Greg Stephens on guitar.

Well 31 musicians turned up the Glebe to play this. Fantastic. A great night. A couple of people have pointed out a significant fact about this recording. Tony Weatherall(one row melodeon) and Kate Barfield(fiddle) are playing significantly different versions of the tune (listen to the fiddle solo on the second time through, and the melodeon on the third). This leads to significant decision taking if you are trying to learn it off the recording. But hey, it's folk music.

The world and his brother(and sister)are gathering in the Glebe pub, on Glebe St in Stoke, on the evening of Tuesday Jan 4. At 10 o'clock we are going to play a massed version of the Stoke Hornpipe, kicked-off by the Boat Band. Be there, fellow Clayheads, and bring instruments. Sheet music available on the Stoke Hornpipe Facebook event page. Don't wait till 10 to arrive, the music will start at 9.

No, I have been away from South Uist for most of the last 33 Years and the nearest I came to seeing/hearing you live would be when I was in Skye from 1983 to 85 and I think you might have come as far north as Armadale or Mallaig or even Glenelg around that time: Unfortunately I didn't even manage that much!

Great Band! ***** The Boat Band are: Kate Barfield - fiddle; Mark Burke - percussion, melodeon; Greg Stephens - banjo, guitar, percussion, melodeon; Tony Weatherall - melodeon. Did any of these play in the band "Companions of the Rosy Hour" ? The fiddler in that band was Neti Vaan but I don't know the others.
