1 the type of wood species vary Stain doesn't take the same hue 2 it's all about prep.If you sand against the grain it will show, this includes swirl marks from orbitals and palm sanders. 3 if your wood has a natural color in it then expect the varying stain hues to be ineffective because that color will be predominant. 4 some woods require a conditioning before staining to remove blotchy spots 5 even if its the same kind of wood expect them to stain slightly darker or lighter 6 never compare and choose a color based off a photo, get yourself a live sample with the wood and stain color 7 the most important you get what you pay for. All things could go wrong I've seen the perfect prep job with the worst stain job. People don't wipe the stain properly and it shows.
