    I always lower my antennas at the first warning of snow and ice as well as high winds here in Oregon. Those Lightning L2, 4, 6 and I think 8 quads appear to be well designed and use quality materials that make them sturdy. I'd like to get the L2 but would like if they made an L3. That's all I have room for.

    A local operator just got a GR45, says his 102" whip still beats it. Can't really beat a 102" whip. I've got a Predator 10K on mine right now and my 102" whip beats it.

    • @yohnjager9893
      @yohnjager9893 Рік тому

      The GR45 works like a flat side so "beat it" is situational. the 102" whip works vertical, if you were working someone on their horizonal beam with a GR45 you might just beat the 102" vertical hands down.

      It’s been proven over and over that quads pick up less atmospheric noise and have a better receive. Yagi 1/2 wavelength surface area compared to 1 wavelength of surface area. Also perform better than yagis close to the ground. But as said earlier (Cumbersome).

    I had the 6 element which was the largest at the time on top of a wind mill tower at 40' . I was king of 11 meter side band in San Antonio.in the 70's it stood up to Texas weather just fine the solid copper wire elements lasted 15 years till I took it down . The only thing that wore was the short aluminum tubes that the fiberglass spreaders slid into they eventually wore the holes out a little making them a little loose but other than that the antenna was fantastic. I bought a complete rebuild kit and another complete antenna before Signal Engineering closed up.

    This is not a Quad, basically because the driver element is not a configured as a quad loop, instead is configured as 1/2 vertical antenna. For this reason the bottom feed point is vertical polarization, opposite to proper quad drivers. If a Yagi with quad driver (and reflector) is called "Quagi", this antenna with quad reflector and directors and vertical driver could be called "Quavert", but definitely not a Cubical Quad.

    • @lightningantennas445

      Quads are close loop antennas (square or diamond shape) measuring exactly 1⁄4 of a wavelength on each side therefore forming full (1) wavelength and our Quads fulfill that definition. Certainly, Quad antennas can be thought as equivalent to cophasing two dipoles. They both (diamond or square) exhibit the same gain: 1.4 db over the field of the dipole antenna (3,5 db gain over isotropic). All of this is very well known theory. What makes Lightning antennas Quads different is their unique patented feed system (US4236160A). Traditionally, most close loop type antennas have been fed by electrically opening the driven element so as to provide a current feed to a relatively low impedance point. Our Quads are voltage fed, not current fed. This is achieved by solving the requirement to match the high impedance feed point in the loop to a relatively low impedance feed line. In consequence our quad feed points are not in the same geometrical position in the loop for a given polarization (vertical or horizontal) as a traditional current fed feed point. They are in fact ninety degrees apart on a loop. In the diamond shape of the example the bottom feed point becomes max voltage (max impedance point) corresponding to max current in both horizontal tips on the loop (where the traditional current fed feed opening should be located). I hope this addresses your comment.

      @@lightningantennas445 If you take a closed loop, and you feed it at any point, keeping the loop closed, currents takes both sides same phase. It works, as you showed, the shape looks a loop physically, but electrically is a closed loop, behaving same as a vertical antenna. Hence, it works, yes, looks a classic quad, but the driver element is not a classic open loop, just a closed loop, behaving as two 1/2 vertical antennas joined at bottom and top. In fact, you can change the driver element for any other type and will work as well. I would like to see this antenna side by side with proper quad, same boom length and number of elements, to see any performance difference. Thanks for your reply.

      This is correct is not a real quad...the driver element is a closed loop whit the feed point in the corners for that reason is a 1/2 wave driver element not a real quad, for that reason is not performance very well. Eliezer NP3EW 73"

      I've tried to understand the driven element for years but let me see here if it's not a real quad then it must be real close . I see 4 , 1/4 wave sections in a quad shape as a continuous loop thats a full wave length , guys I must be missing something they had that feed patented and it worked just fine for me . The antenna held up good and out lasted My service there.

      it a Cubical Quad with switchable from vertical or Horizontal with a folded dipole to feed it , A QuYagi is a quad reflector with a half wave yagi driven and a half wave yagi director with is not a cubical quad like a Maco commit or Maco shooting star is a QuYagi, now all quad fed vertical is fed at the bottom if it fed from the side it in Harazonal all Cubical quad please read up on antennas before you put someone's antenna down because everybody reads what you print knows you don't know anything about antennas.
