MIDI Layers Defined the Pop Music of the 80's
Today was Musical Instrument Digital Interface day. The MOTU MIDI Express XT had a glitch with the Boss DR-880 drum machine. Still I have not figured out how to use its presets, which are moot when you use the sequencer Digital Performer. It has extensive MIDI routings and sync options, but somehow when triggering the drum machine to start playing via "Transmit Sync," either MIDI beat clocks or time coder or what ever... it would overload the DR-880 and its tempo would play twice too fast and erratic and not sync with the sequence, even if both tempos were set the same. I had to bypass the Express XT all together and take MIDI out of the Audiobox to send to the DR-880. Now it is working again. And whatever bug that was locked up the entire MIDI set up on the Mac and the interface. So it has come back to live, and it was expensive. So MIDI is back up and running, and I can use the modules now layering up some orchestral type sounds. I also fine tuned my audio routings, so the modules mostly are going through the Spirit mixer. The plan all along was to use the Yamaha SY-99 as a non-weighted controller, the same way I have been gigging and playing since 1997. It is one tier up, so I just raise up my shop stool which I bought specifically for this reason. It goes up much higher than a drum throne or desk chair. I can choose to play piano on the S90 sitting like normal on the bottom with my piano technique, or when I want my old gig sounds play from the SY-99. It like the DX only outputs MIDI volume (7) 100 rather than 128, so the triggered sounds are more mellow. Success on a snowy sunny day, but still I've got the blues.

Sometimes you just have to let go. Jesus said when the odds are against you, you sleep. In the Lion's Den. When it rains a butterfly sleeps. So this studio continues its evolution seemingly back to square one, built from scratch, although I have had it together for decades. I finally got a reasonable mix for the Rhodes, the bass pedals, and the DX pad, and suddenly out of the blue, A DEAD SHORT...

Smooth Jazz. I have played a lot of fusion in my day, but only recently did this music strike an off spring called Smooth Jazz. It's been around probably two decades, but really it was just instrumental Motown for the most part. Real jazz fusion is more complicated, or rather develops beyond simple pop tunes with; I,IV, V. Jazz is the same way. It is like classical music, not folk music. I feel...

I haven't played trio jazz on piano in quite a while. Certainly I haven't played Dizzy's tune in at least 12 years. So I gave it a shot. Thanks to Jamie for the tracks. I burned my thumb broiling Talapia tonight, so bass wasn't an option.

So back to MIDI, again. MIDI is pretty challenging, because there is a lot to think about besides sound or audio or music. My MOTU MIDIExpress XT gave me hellatious problems today and yesterday. It keep dropping the MIDI signal via USB, and the hardware unit froze up and would not operate. Audio/MIDI would not open and Clockworks wouldn't recognize the hardware. After getting Digital Performer ...

My goal for several years in my all ready existent MIDI recording studio was to do projects using live Rhodes and electric bass. I have been producing original music since 1997 in this same studio, and the audio functioned to record live trumpet. I used MIDI for everything else. After working with Edmond Truman at ManCave Studio, we produced a handful of CD's using Studio 1 by Presonus. Everyth...
Vocal Blues

In my quest for a better and more functional studio space, vocal overdubs or tracks became a priority. I sang in chorus in high school, and that was about it. I can read music, and blend, but I never developed or had the desire to have a solo singing voice of any kind. I was first trumpet in the band, and played piano. Tracking a vocal is important, and how you do that will determine the artist...

I seem to have a wide variety of musical interests, approaches, and vocabulary. I have been trying to integrate these into ONE SPACE, my chosen smaller bedroom after removing its 60 year old worn out carpet and installing mineral fiber acoustical ceiling tile. I knew the acoustics improved drastically in this studio space, but the set up was just too big. You need some ambient air and space to ...

My quest for the absolute best acoustic piano sample never has ended, although I have tamed its priority. When I gigged professionally in Columbus, Ohio I used a Korg SG-Rack, and it was excellent. I triggered this piano sample with my DX-7 which only outputs 100 of 127 MIDI values making the sound more mellow. this was desirable. I developed a knack to be able to play piano on an unweighted sy...

So I apologize for back to Digital Performer pre-recorded MIDI tracks and audio. I record these excerpts in several passes of overdubs, and then just turn on Quicktime and let the sequence play in Digital Performer. I just played all of these parts live via MIDI. I took apart and completely reassembled my upstairs studio, because it was too cramped. I needed an acoustic-like sound stage with so...

I did some comparison today recording my Jazz bass. One is through a Countryman D.I. box flat into the board. This one is what eventually emerged as the most authentic sounding funky bass. The Lounsberry Tall and Fat is a pedal meant to emulate the preamp of a Hammond console organ. Tube saturation. I decided to try it on bass with the TC Electronic BAM miniature bass head, which has a dedicate...

AFter seeing a local presentation of Kandor and Ebb's Broadway musical, Cabaret today, I felt the need to work in my own studio, which recently had become a nemesis. It was cramped and closterphobic. So as I drove home from the play I planned in my head what I was going to do to make it more appealing. In the process I discovered both tweeters in my NS-10m studio monitors were blown. No wonder ...

Paul your studio is really beautiful. I wish I didn't have those ugly purple Auralex studio foam pieces in my space. I couldn't do without them since my studio was an old carport, concrete pad below and bricks on two sides, plus high ceiling. Horrible acoustics prior. Guess I could always substitute a different Auralex color.. Oh well I've dealt with it since '02, guess I can deal with it till whenever
Thanks, Kyle. That is high praise. You are making the best of your space and it is exemplary. I enjoy your music making greatly. Cheers.
Well, my mix is a bit off, but I couldn't hear much today acoustically. Needed to put on the cans, but I need an extension cable. My MIDI volumes on these layers is too low, so I have some balancing to do with the trim values. No distortion, which is good. I have a mixture of MIDI and USB, and it is confusing sometimes. Got to turn LOCAL off on the keyboards, which I haven't done yet. And to control the volume of DX patches via MIDI controller 7, you have to program it into every single patch. Ugh. I got the 88 controller the appropriate height to play piano realistically. I had to cut the legs off the single stand to get it that way. And the keys on the SY-99 are stiff from not being played much. Getting there. I am back-tracking...
The more DX7s you layer, the better it sounds. Layer DX7s to the moon and it is heavenly music.
Just experimenting with this set up. Moved the DX up from the garage. Need to get it in the MIDI set up for Digital Performer. I think playing chords on the Rhodes and melody on the Dx would be better...
Crumar Mojopedals are good. (with the right sound)
This was relaxing to listen to and mesmerising. Keep going! 👏🏽
Nice authentic solo Paul👏 , digging this real much
There is a little bit of Avant-Garde in there... mainly from getting lost in the form and having to recover! Jazzzzzz!!.
This sound pretty good -6DB LUFS. There is some slight peaking in the mix. The Fender piano. Fender is just for rock and roll musicians. Try a YAMAHA. Those old Fenders suck man. I can't play them at all.
That mixer is the heart beat of his operation. Bass is way better mixed. Way better. Dosent sound good solo. sorry.
American Jazz is not so popular for obvious reasons. It does not translate to the mainstream populace for several reasons. Swing rhythm really stems or contributes to dance music for couples as in the Big Bands of the 30's and 40's, and Early Jazz from the turn of the century through the 1920's. It continued as an instrumental form creating the genre of Jazz. Still it exists but in very limited form. I would be so bold to say that Swing rhythm requires true feeling or sentiment and mostly it is positive in nature. Jazz evolved and the Avant-garde added strife and other serious emotions that still used swing as a basis. Much of this was because of the Civil Rights Movement. Miles Davis alone created three sub categories of Jazz, Modal, Cool, and Fusion. What I am playing in this video became the mainstay of what most Americans recognize as Jazz. The Swing feel is different from that of Early Jass. The harmonic language and melodic lines stem from Bebop. Latin music, music from the Caribbean and South America contributed greatly to other American styles of music.
Dave Grusin!
He is an amazing musician, and I admire him greatly.
@ I’ve been a fan since the mid 80’s. I wrote some pretty decent tunes back at that time in that mode, but they’re long gone since I had to save to floppy disk in that era!!
Sounds good!
Check out that mixer.
Who taught him that diminished chord?
Nice chorus and reverb
There is a bit of Ring Modulation in there too, but the Lexicon is the main source of that phat reverb. Thanks for your interest.
This shit is dope, bro. No pun intended.
Ha ha. Thank you very much. There are times when sitting in this den when I can smell someone else's poo... for real.
It doesn’t get any better than this imho. Even including that $8K British V8 Rhodes !
Thanks, Kyle. I am going to upgrade the 54 Mark ll with an Avion Preamp and some new hammer tips. I have it playing through the A-100, but that means it doesn't get played very often. They are offering a drop in replacement, although I had to bypass the "sliders."
Man, Jay's Rhodes was in bad shape physically. It played okay with his voicing, and all the notes worked. Some sticky notes up top, but it was the only one I had to completely disassemble down to the case. And it took forever to wire brush clean the tone bars and replace the screws and grommets. It was only later I decided to put a Retroflyer Preamp in it. AT first I just took out the Bass Boost which is useless anyway, and put in a 15K volume pot with zip wire. Played it through the Leslie 142 with an organ interface, and with tube preamp and the doppler spinning horn, I should have just left it alone. but it was good discipline. A few damped notes now, but mostly acceptable. This one sounds good when you really hit it hard, play hard and make it overdrive. And the action can take it.
@ again Jay would be proud to know the care you have given in the restoration of his instrument!
great video!!!!😊
Jazz is good!
Great music as always thank you Paul
nice tune, man. sounds excellent.
killing it my man, sounds good!
Lovely. Well done. I seem to recall you said you graduated from UNC. Go heels!

Chick Corea vibes!
Thank you.
I don't know HOW in the world BOTH tweeters blew in my Yamaha NS-10m monitors sitting here..
That button down shirt is correct for the sound of the piano.
Замечательно красиво👍

I'm so fed up with this artist.
This artist needs to get a hair cut and put on a button down shirt.
I got a hair cut.
Your Rhodes always sounds great. What audio interface do you use? Congratulations
The Presonus Audiobox is about $50.00 used, and I have about six of them. Mix first, then stereo in. This set up is the first X/Y miked Rhodes I have recorded. This Rhodes also is close mixed with two vintage Shure Unidyne vocal mikes, and they sound great straight into the Audiobox. I am trying to make this space more musician friendly for LIVE play, thus creating bass, drums, piano, and guitar live in an acoustic like mix that is getting recording without a console. It is working here pretty well. Plans to record some tracks with which to play, so I am practising doing that. I really need two EV 15" three way PA cabinets, because if you run bass and drums, you need that sounds reinforcement. But a little at a time. I was amazed that I could get the Rhodes to record well this way, but that is the difference between the Stage model and the Suitcase. 2 12's in the bottom enclosure, but with the speakers underneath, I have trouble hearing or rather feeling the piano like my others. So it is a different recording concept, but the Rhodes is translating well in either situation. I can plug in two additional speakers to the Rhodes bottom amp and put them wherever I want. In the meantime there are two huge resistors handlling the missing speaker load. Thanks for your interest.
Hi, Paul! I stumbled upon your channel because of your video on the S90. We have one at our church I am trying to master. Thanks for the music! I enjoy hearing you play
Thanks! I need to use mine more often.
George Costanza plays da piano...
and the changes are more "Minnie, the Moocher."
killer man!
Hey Paul, did you use some silicon spray or something similar on the pedestal felts after doing the bump mod? My 1977 Mark 1 has the mod as well, but some keys in the middle region seem to be some kind of “stiffer”, like more friction between felt (on the key pedestal) and hammer cam than the ones on the very ends of the piano, they are amazingly light and easy to play. Going to see a local Rhodes tech here soon because of this.
The answer may lie in the key bushings, the red Steinway felt in the neck of the key that sits on the pivot post. Some had deteriorated, so I had to learn how to replace them. Bought some "caul's" proper adhesive and a roll of new felt. Some of these fail and make the keys stick. If you replace them, it brings the key back into regulation. Also on this Rhodes, I have a few dampened notes, because I never had to shim the key heights to get an even keyboard. I tried to even out this keyboard, but bailed out and gave up. So the escapement is out of whack. I need to level the entire keyboard back to the measurement that Vintage Vibe gives with a tape measure. Front rail to key top.
@ thanks a lot for your insight. Coincidentally, I brought my ‘77 to a pretty renown tech here, and he told me some of the same things concerning the key bushings. So that’s interesting. He also will do the miracle mod for me again as he said mine was done with kinda not so great materials. He also pointed out a lot of things, like the action rail not being properly tightened and such things, that might affect the overall playing feel. Imma see how it goes.
Next thing you know, you are hauling a heavy bass Amp. I just play it on piano. If they don't like it, screw em.
Yeah, I am a bit over the top with sound...
and by the way it is an extremely bastardized version of the tune with wrong changes, but the feel is what I was going for...
Bass is a little too hot for me.
That is the biggest challenge of this room. The volume of bass changes almost by the minute from overhead aircraft and local freight trains. One time it will be loud through the amp, and last night was very quiet. I have the levels set on the module and into the mixer, so finally it got balanced pretty well, but if acoustically the bass sound through the amp is quiet or loud, I compensate with my hand velocity throwing it off a bit.
Very nice. Merry Christmas.
Beautifully done! Sitting in San Diego enjoying this and thinking about the white Christmases I had in North Carolina many years ago. Thanks for this, Paul!
So you are playing bass on the upper keyboard and piano below? This is beautiful. Merry Christmas sir
Yes, but I will find a better camera angle in the near future. USB cables it seems (for the webcam) can't be too long, so I am limited. thanks for your support.
Bravo Paul. One of my all time favorite pieces of music. Love anything Guaraldi. Merry Christmas!
So beautiful! <3 <3 <3 Thank you! Merry Christmas!
Thanks! Great job!
This performer needs to put on a shirt and get a hair cut.
That would help the overall presentation, wouldn't it? But I had minor surgery on my armpits and I can't shower. Should heal soon.

Very nice 👍🏻
Dear Paul I’m in desperate need I have a Kurzweil PC88MX and I’m frustrated beyond words. I commented on one of your other videos about my problem getting the top off my PC88MX. I’ve left a slew of messages to people hopefully to get a resolve quickly as it is on the foot of my bed as I type. 9 easy peazy screws later and I’m very sick on my stomach, as it’s not budging! Thanks in advance. I sure will appreciate it if you can help me.🤗🎹
Hey Debbie. yes, I experienced this SAME issue. The side panels (2), after the screws are taken off, have to SLIDE with up or down, and then they pop right off. That is the solution. Hope this helps.
@ thanks for your reply after replacing the battery- -no sound. I did a soft reset-nothing. Have any idea what else I can try. 😢
@@debbiegolden-alvarez9555 On mine, which has to be about the same age, the capacitors on the power supply board often are the first things to go. My display quit after it sat for a year. I need to try it again. There must be a pro tech somewhere that easily could fix it.
@ thank you for your reply. I’m getting desperate they’re falling by the wayside. Can’t get a returned call. Crossing my fingers!!!!!!🤗🎹
I went to the trouble of replacing all of the key contacts on My PC-88MX only to have it die a year or so later. Still sitting in my garage, but I just can't throw it out. Someone could fix it. Where are you located?
Dear Sir, I have a Kurzweil PC88MX and can not get the top off. I watched a lady’s video saying just nine screws, not coming off with those 9 screws only. I’m desperate as it is sitting on the foot of my bed now. Can you please help me?! Deeply appreciated!🤗
